I am the most popular girl in school.
I am a cheerleader, the captain of the squad, and the head cheerleader.
I am also going to be prom queen when the time comes.
Being this way, you would think that I would have a perfect life with lots of friends and get whatever I want whenever I want it, right?
Well, you are right, but there is one thing that I don't get, no matter how hard I try.
I have a crush on the shy nerdy girl who sits alone in the back of the classroom during English Lit.
Her name is Amanda Jenkins, and even though we are close, I still don't really know her.
I know absolutely nothing about her except for her love of reading books, which is something that I find really cool.
I wish I could have a conversation with her that is deeper than what her favorite book is or who she likes in One Direction.
I wish I could get to know the real her.
Why do I care so much about getting to know her?
Why do I care about getting to know anyone?
That is simple: I am lonely.
Even though I am surrounded by people every day, I don't consider any of them my friends.
They are all just people who talk to me because I am popular, because I am a cheerleader.
The Queen And The Nerd
During lunch period, I pull out my phone and check my grades.
I have a B in English Lit, an A in History, and a C in Math.
I am about to close the app when I see the D in Chemistry.
My stomach drops.
If I don't get my grade up, I will be kicked off the squad and lose my position as head cheerleader.
I have to do something about this.
After lunch, I walk to the guidance office and see Amanda sitting at a table in the library with another student.
She is helping him with his homework.
I don't know what comes over me, but I walk straight to Mrs. Peterson's desk and ask her if I can get a tutor for Chemistry.
She asks me if I have anyone in mind, and without thinking, I say Amanda's name.
The Queen And The Nerd
Mrs. Peterson smiles and tells me that Amanda is one of their best tutors.
My hands shake as I fill out the tutoring request form.
I spot Amanda in the library during lunch period the next day.
My heart races as I walk toward her table.
She is sitting alone, reading a thick novel.
Her dark-rimmed glasses are slightly askew on her face.
The library is quiet except for the hum of the air conditioning and the occasional shuffling of papers.
I clear my throat to get her attention.
She looks up at me, surprised.
I open my mouth to explain why I am there, but before I can speak, Amanda's expression changes from surprise to suspicion.
She glances around the library, as if looking for hidden cameras or my usual crowd of friends.
Her fingers nervously adjust her glasses as she asks if this is some kind of joke.
The Queen And The Nerd
I don't say anything.
"Why would it be a joke?" I finally manage to ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
Amanda narrows her eyes, "Because people like you don't usually talk to people like me unless there's a punchline."
I take a deep breath, "I need your help with Chemistry, and... I really want to get to know you better."
She doesn't say anything, just watches me for a moment.
Then, she pulls out a piece of paper from her book and begins writing.
The scratching of her pencil against the paper sounds loud in the quiet library.
When she finishes writing, she slides the paper across the table to me without looking up.
I take the paper and read what she has written.
It's an address with a time: 4 PM.
I read it twice, memorizing every number and word.
Just as I am about to ask her what this means, the bell rings, making me jump.
Amanda gathers her things quickly and stands up, mumbling something about having another student to tutor after school.
She hurries away without looking back at me.
The Queen And The Nerd
Her glasses slip down her nose again as she rushes out of the library.
I clutch the paper tightly in my hand, already planning to skip cheerleading practice so I can be there at 4 PM. My phone buzzes with texts from the squad asking where I am, but I ignore them.
