"Jackson, I’m sorry but I can’t find the peach "That dog won’t hunt."
What it means: "This is a waste of time, it’s not going to work out."
My grandma used to say this all the time when I was growing up, and I still use it today.
My wife Natalcie will attest that it’s a very South Carolina saying.
Now, I know what you’re thinking.
Who in the hell calls themselves Jackson?
Well, let me tell you.
I’m Jackson fucking Calloway, and I don’t give a shit what you or anybody else thinks.
I turn from the counter to find one of my employees, a flustered look on her face.
"What do you mean you can’t find the peach syrup? We had it yesterday, and we went through at least five cases. Check the stock room."
She nods and heads off to check.
We had a huge rush on our Peach Bellinis yesterday, and I know we had at least two cases left after we shut down.
I look over to my wife, who’s running the register.
She catches my eye and gives me a small smile.
We’ve been doing this for almost ten years now, and even though we’re married with four kids, we still work well together.
When I retired from the NFL eight years ago, Natalcie was instrumental in helping me open my business.
Calloway’s Corner is a bakery and café that specializes in Southern-style pastries with a Pacific Northwest twist.
The Quarterback Sneak
I head to the back office to check inventory.
The kitchen is in full swing, the sweet smell of sugar and yeast hanging in the air.
My daughter Elena is there, expertly rolling out dough for our scone of the month.
She looks up as I walk by, a grin on her face and flour dusting her nose.
"Dad, can I try making the peach scones today?"
I nod and ruffle her hair before heading into the office.
The inventory logs are stacked neatly on my desk, Natalcie being a very organized person.
She’s always been the brains of this operation.
As I flip through the pages, my son Mason pokes his head in, headphones around his neck.
"Need help with anything techy, Dad?" he asks.
I shake my head no before going back to the pages in front of me.
"Actually, Mason, have you seen anyone unusual around the stock room lately?"
He pauses, a thoughtful look crossing his face.
"Now that you mention it, I did see some guy in a suit poking around yesterday when I was fixing the Wi-Fi."
The Quarterback Sneak
I nod, my eyes scanning the pages in front of me.
I’m not seeing any discrepancies in the inventory.
"Thanks, buddy. I’ll go check it out."
He nods and heads back to the kitchen.
I head to the stock room, my eyes scanning the shelves as I walk in.
Everything is neatly stacked, but I notice a faint smell of peaches lingering in the air.
It’s stronger than usual, and my heart pounds in my chest.
I see a shadow near the back exit.
"Hey! What do you think you’re doing?"
I ask, my voice steady but firm.
The man turns, his suit looking out of place among the flour-dusted shelves.
He hesitates for a second before holding up a small box.
The Quarterback Sneak
"I was just looking for something," he says, his voice shaking slightly.
I edge closer to him, my height casting a long shadow over him.
"Not in my stock room, you're not," I reply, taking the box from his hands.
