I am the one person who creates technology that is always quantum powered.
My startup company, Transcendent Technologies, is the number one place for quantum innovation.
Everyone there is handpicked by me.
Everyone there is a genius in their own right.
The first person I hired was Sophie Knight.
She had impressed me with her knowledge of quantum mechanics.
I had come across her working at a grocery store and had struck up a conversation with her.
She had been recruited by several big name companies but had turned them down.
She didn’t want to be stuck doing the same thing over and over.
She wanted to learn and grow.
I knew I could provide that for her, so I offered her a job on the spot.
It was a little unorthodox, but it had worked out well for both of us.
She had become one of my favorite engineers and even more so, my favorite female companion.
I knew I would never have a traditional romance with Sophie, but that was okay.
The Quantum Billionaire
I lead her over to our latest project.
Lab 7 is one of the largest labs in the building, and we have it all to ourselves.
There are three long steel benches running down the center of the room with various prototypes on them.
The walls are lined with shelves that contain our tools and parts.
The first bench has five experimental quantum processors lined up on it.
They are all at different stages of development, but they all look similar.
They are small rectangular boxes with blinking lights on them.
The quantum processors are the brain of the operation, and we are integrating them into everyday consumer electronics.
Sophie goes straight to work on a TV prototype that is sitting on the end of the workbench.
She makes some microscopic adjustments to it and then steps back to observe it.
The Quantum Billionaire
I take my tablet out of my bag and sit down next to her.
I open the app that controls the quantum processor and wait for her to turn it on.
She flips a switch and I watch as the power levels fluctuate on my screen. "It’s still not right," Sophie says as she frowns at the TV.
She flips the switch again and I watch as power surges through the system.
The quantum processor sparks, sending a small shower of blue light across the workbench.
Sophie curses under her breath, but she doesn’t flinch away from it like most people would have.
She’s used to this happening by now.
I get up and walk over to examine the damage.
The quantum core is burnt out, but it didn’t do any damage to the rest of the prototype.
I make a mental note of what modifications I need to make to it before I build another one.
The Quantum Billionaire
I look over at Sophie, who is still frowning at the TV.
"Let's dismantle it and start fresh," I say, knowing this failure is just another step forward.
After the quantum core failure, I gather Sophie and our team in the main conference room to discuss our next move.
We have been working on expanding our educational initiatives for months, but we have hit a roadblock.
Looking at the burnt prototype reminds me that we need more minds working on quantum integration.
I propose launching a pilot program at local universities, teaching the basics of quantum computing.
Sophie suggests starting with practical demonstrations, using our failed TV prototype as a teaching tool.
The Quantum Billionaire
We spend hours drafting a curriculum, mapping out labs, and selecting which universities to approach first.
After the meeting, Sophie and I head to Lab 7.
She takes a marker and starts drawing on the whiteboard.
It’s her concept for quantum imaging.
She explains that by using quantum dots, we could increase the pixel precision and reduce power consumption.
Her drawings show an intricate array of quantum-enabled pixels, each one capable of reproducing perfect color.
The Quantum Billionaire
I study her design, realizing it could solve the stability issues we faced earlier.
Lila brings in the damaged prototype, and Sophie uses it to demonstrate where the quantum dots would be integrated.
I start calculating the power requirements on my tablet, already seeing how this could revolutionize display technology.
I sit at my desk, reviewing the schematics Sophie sent over for her quantum imaging concept.
My phone buzzes, and I glance at the caller ID.
Marcus Chen, founder of Quantum Ventures.
My hands shake slightly as I answer; his firm rarely makes direct contact with us.
"Hello?"
"Mr. Reed," he says, his voice firm but polite.
"I hope you're doing well."
"I'm fine, thank you."
I straighten in my chair, my mind racing with possibilities.
"We've seen your patent filing for quantum dot displays," he continues.
The Quantum Billionaire
"We're interested in discussing potential funding and investment opportunities."
I pull up our project timeline on my computer, mentally preparing for negotiations.
"Mr. Chen, we've been looking for investors. What kind of terms were you thinking?"
Sophie knocks and enters with an updated set of test results.
She stops short when she sees my expression, realizing something important is happening.
I motion for her to take a seat as I listen to Chen's proposal.
He outlines their investment strategy and potential timelines.
I take notes, matching their offer against our project schedule.
We set a meeting for next week to finalize the details before hanging up.
I turn to Sophie, who's been watching intently the entire time.
The Quantum Billionaire
"Marcus Chen wants to invest in our quantum dot display project," I say, still processing the conversation.
Sophie's eyes widen, a mix of excitement and disbelief. "Are you serious? This could change everything for us."
"Absolutely," I reply, feeling the weight of the opportunity. "But we need to make sure our prototype is flawless before the meeting."
