I was tired.
Tired of being the only one in the marriage trying to make it work.
Tired of being the only one who cared about whether we were together or not.
Tired of being resilient and strong, pretending that everything was fine when it wasn’t.
I had found out about Chris and Sarah two weeks ago.
Sarah was a woman from the office where Chris worked.
I didn’t know her personally but I had heard Chris talk about her before.
The first time I heard about her was when Chris came home from work one day and mentioned that Sarah was trying to get close to him.
He had laughed about it then, saying that she was so obvious and that he wasn’t interested.
I believed him.
Now, I wasn’t so sure.
Two weeks ago, I had found a text on Chris’s phone from Sarah suggesting that they meet at a hotel for lunch.
I had been looking for a necklace that I had forgotten at home and I went through his messages to see if he had reminded me to bring it, only to stumble on the text.
The Pursuit
I sat at our kitchen table, staring at old photos spread across the wooden surface.
My fingers traced over a particular image - me, Chris, and Mack at a campus party.
Mack had been the first to ask me out.
He had been my friend for a long time and I had known him since freshman year of college.
He was a good guy, with a gentle smile and kind eyes.
He had asked me out on a date once but I had turned him down.
I had chosen Chris instead.
Chris was charming and confident, the kind of guy who could walk into a room and have everyone’s attention on him.
I had been drawn to that.
Now, looking at Mack’s face in the photo, I remembered how he had always been there for me.
The Pursuit
He had been there when I needed someone to talk to after my parents died.
He had been there when I needed help with school assignments.
He had been there when I needed someone to accompany me to my doctor’s appointments. My phone buzzed on the table in front of me, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I picked it up and saw that it was a text from Mack.
Hey, I heard about Chris and Sarah.
Are you okay?
I stared at the words on the screen for a while before responding.
How did you know?
We have mutual friends who saw them together at a restaurant last week.
They didn’t even try to hide it.
I sighed softly, rubbing my temples in an attempt to ward off the headache that was starting to form behind my eyes.
I hadn’t told anyone about what I found out yet, not even Mack.
But I knew that he would find out eventually anyway so it didn’t surprise me that he already knew.
Do you want to talk about it?
His text asked. I hesitated for a moment before starting to type out a response.
Honestly, I don’t know if I’m ready to talk about it yet.
But thank you for offering an ear to listen if I need it.
Mack’s response came quickly and I could almost hear his voice in my head as I read his words on the screen.
Of course, Megs.
That’s what friends are for right?
The Pursuit
Take care of yourself and let me know if you need anything okay?
I nodded to myself, even though he couldn’t see me.
I would take care of myself.
I would do what I had to do.
I had been putting off checking our bank statements for a while now.
It was something that I had always done before, but since finding out about Chris and Sarah, I had been avoiding it.
I didn’t want to know how much money he had spent on her.
But today, I decided to check them.
I went into the study in our house and sat down at the desk, pulling Chris’s laptop towards me.
I opened it up and clicked on the folder where we kept our bank statements.
As I scrolled through the different files, I noticed a folder tucked away in the corner of the screen.
The Pursuit
It was labeled "Project Delta" and it was located in a section of the laptop that Chris used for work documents.
I frowned slightly as I double-clicked on it, wondering what it could be. Dozens of photos loaded onto the screen and my hands shook slightly as I realized what they were.
They were photos of Chris and Sarah together - at a beach that I didn’t recognize, at a dimly lit restaurant, and even at our local park.
There was one photo of them kissing by a fountain where Chris had proposed to me.
My stomach twisted with nausea as I scrolled through more images, each one dated over the past eight months.
The Pursuit
I closed the laptop, knowing it was time to confront the truth and reclaim my life.
I stared at Mack’s text message for ten minutes, my finger hovering over the reply button.
The house felt suffocating around me, with evidence of Chris’s betrayal everywhere - our wedding photos on the wall, his coffee mug on the counter, that damned laptop still open on the table.
My phone buzzed again and I looked down to see a text from Chris.
Hey, I’m going to be late coming home from work today.
Again.
I knew where he was.
I knew who he was with.
My hands were shaking as I typed out a response to Mack.
Coffee sounds good.
Tomorrow at 2?
The Pursuit
The usual place.
I needed someone to talk to, someone who wasn’t tangled up in all of this mess.
