I was walking down the street when I saw a ball of fur moving about.
It was a puppy, wagging its tail and running around in circles.
The puppy was hungry, that much was clear.
It ran up to me and started whining.
I reached down and petted the puppy.
The whining stopped and it started licking my hand.
It was very affectionate.
It nuzzled my hand and continued to lick.
I could feel its tongue against my skin, raspy and dry.
The puppy was very hungry.
I stood up and started to walk away.
The puppy followed me, tail wagging, whining about its empty stomach.
I pointed down at the puppy and it followed me home.
My girlfriend Ellie was at our apartment when I arrived.
The puppy followed me inside and nuzzled up against Ellie's leg.
She picked it up and cradled it in her arms.
"It's so cute," she said.
"It's also very hungry."
I told her how I had found it on the street and how it had followed me home.
Ellie took the puppy into the kitchen and fed it some milk.
The puppy lapped it up quickly and Ellie fed it some more.
After the milk, she gave it some water and then some food.
The puppy ate quickly, tail wagging the entire time.
After the food, Ellie bathed the puppy.
It didn't mind the bath and continued to lick at Ellie's hands and face.
The Puppy Who Changed My Life
After the bath, we decided it was time to visit the local veterinarian.
We wrapped the puppy in a towel and headed out.
The vet's office was a short walk away, nestled between a bakery and a bookstore.
The sign above the door read "Dr. Harris, Veterinarian."
We went inside and were greeted by the receptionist.
She looked up at us and smiled when she saw the puppy.
"Hi there, what brings you in today?" she asked.
"We found this puppy on the street," Ellie said.
"It's hungry and dirty. We're not sure where it came from."
The receptionist nodded.
"Let me get Dr. Harris."
She disappeared into the back and returned with the vet.
The Puppy Who Changed My Life
Dr. Harris was a middle-aged woman with short brown hair and glasses perched on the end of her nose.
She smiled at us when she saw the puppy.
"Hi there," she said.
"I'm Dr. Harris. What's going on?"
"We found this puppy on the street," I told her again.

"It's hungry and dirty. We're not sure where it came from."
Dr. Harris nodded and took the puppy from Ellie.
She examined it thoroughly, checking its ears and eyes and listening to its heartbeat with her stethoscope.
"He's a bit underweight," she said, "but he looks healthy otherwise."
Ellie smiled at me and I could tell she was relieved that the puppy was okay. "Do you know what kind of dog he is?" Ellie asked Dr. Harris.
"Yes," Dr. Harris replied.
"He is a mix of a golden retriever. This breed is very popular here."
Ellie nodded.
"What about his shots? Is he up to date?"
Dr. Harris examined the puppy again and then looked up at Ellie.
"He's had all his shots except for rabies," she said.
"I can give him that shot now if you'd like."
Ellie nodded again.
"Yes, please."
Dr. Harris gave the puppy its shot and then gave us some information on how to care for him.
The Puppy Who Changed My Life
As we left the clinic, Chucky trotted beside us, his tail wagging with newfound energy.
Ellie and I exchanged glances, both of us thinking the same thing.
The vet's suggestion was a good one.
We walked through the town square, Chucky sniffing at every corner and fire hydrant.
Ellie stopped to chat with Mrs. Jenkins, our neighbor who ran the local bakery.
Mrs. Jenkins admired Chucky's playful antics and asked where we'd found him.
Ellie told her a story, and Mrs. Jenkins nodded sympathetically.
"I haven’t heard anyone complain about a lost puppy," she said, "but I shall keep my ear to the ground."
We continued home, Chucky bounding ahead of us.
He seemed more at ease now that he'd been fed and bathed.
The Puppy Who Changed My Life
When we got home, Ellie set up a corner of the living room for Chucky with a blanket and a chew toy.
As Chucky gnawed on the toy, I examined his collar more closely.
The tag with the phone number was still unreadable, but something else caught my eye.
There was a small bulge in the fabric of the collar.
Curiosity overcame me, and I loosened the collar, pulling it apart.
Inside, I discovered a tiny microchip sewn into the fabric.
Ellie gasped upon witnessing this.
"Do you think that's where his owner's information is?"
The Puppy Who Changed My Life
I nodded.
"Let's go back to Dr. Harris and see if she can scan it."
We headed back out, Chucky trotting beside us.
As we entered the clinic again, Dr. Harris looked up, surprised to see us so soon.
"Back already? Did you find something?" she asked, eyeing the collar in my hand.
"Yes," Ellie replied, holding out the microchip. "We think this might have his owner's information."
The Puppy Who Changed My Life
Dr. Harris led us into the examination room, where a scanner sat on the counter.
Chucky sat obediently on the table, his tail wagging as if he sensed our anticipation.
Ellie held him steady while Dr. Harris carefully positioned the scanner over the microchip.
The machine beeped, and we all leaned in closer.
On the screen, a name and phone number appeared.
The ink was smudged from the rain, but it was legible enough to make out.
I scribbled down the details quickly, feeling a mix of relief and curiosity.
Ellie squeezed my arm, her eyes shining with excitement.
We had found Chucky's family.
The Puppy Who Changed My Life
Back home, I sat at the kitchen table with the phone in hand, Chucky curled up at my feet.
Ellie stood by the window, observing as the rain tapped gently against the glass.
The room was steeped in silence, broken only by the quiet breaths of Chucky and the occasional rumble of thunder outside.
I dialed the number from the microchip, my fingers steady but my heart racing.
The phone rang once, twice, and then a voice answered.
It was a man's voice, cautious and unfamiliar.
"Hello?" he said.
"Who's this?"
I took a deep breath before speaking.
"Hi, my name is Dick Thompson. I'm calling about a dog named Chucky."
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, I wondered if we'd reached a wrong number.
The man's voice returned, now tinged with a mix of hope and disbelief.
"Chucky? Is he alright? We've been searching everywhere for him!"
Ellie turned from the window, her eyes meeting mine as she whispered, "We found his family."
