The protagonist grew up as the illegitimate daughter of a manipulative mother and a neglectful father, using her ability to read people's minds to her advantage, but when her half-sister's fianc becomes infatuated with her, it further complicates her troubled family dynamics until tragedy strikes with the unexpected death of her beloved younger brother.
My mother didn’t want me.
I knew it the moment I was born, when I saw the look of disappointment on her face.
From that day on, she never stopped reminding me.
She told me that I was nothing like my sister, Sophia Johnson, who was the image of our mother, with her blonde hair and pretty blue eyes.
In contrast, I had long brown hair and brown eyes.
My mother used to tell me that I was plain and ugly.
That’s not what hurt the most, though.
What hurt was knowing that my father barely even remembered that I existed.
My parents were both university professors and my mother was determined to go back to work as soon as she had given birth to me.
She left me to be taken care of by a series of nannies.
She never wanted to be a mother and it showed in the way that she neglected me.
Even when I was very small, I knew that I was not wanted.
My mother never tried to hide her hatred towards me.
I remember, even when I was three years old, how she’d call me a “sneaky little rat” or a “stupid little girl”.
I knew that my only purpose in life was to be reminded by her what a terrible mistake it was for my father to have cheated on her with my mother.
To make matters worse, my half-sister was the favorited child who could do no wrong in my father’s eyes.
Sophia Johnson was two years older than me and as different from me as night is from day.
She had blonde hair and blue eyes just like our mother, which made them look even more alike.
Sophia was kind and gentle and beautiful, while I was plain and intelligent enough to be able to see what my parents were doing to me even at such a young age.
I remember wishing that I could have been born with blue eyes too, so that maybe then my mother would have been able to love me or at least be kind to me.
My parents had another child, a boy, who they named Samuel Thompson.
Sammy was four years younger than me and he loved me more than anyone else in the world ever had or ever would.
He had learned at a very young age that he could get what he wanted from our parents by telling them how much he loved them.
When he was young, he used to tell me how much he loved me all the time, too.
He would come to my room and sit on my bed and give me hugs and kisses.
Despite the things my mother said to me, my brother always made me feel loved.
My father never called me any names or criticized me.
He never said anything at all to me, actually.
However, he did show me through his actions that he didn’t care much about me, either.
He was much too busy doting on his golden child, Sophia, for him to see me.
I never knew why my parents chose to give me Samuel’s last name instead of Johnson, which was their last name.
I only discovered the reason why when I was ten years old and accidentally discovered that I was able to read minds.
I was able to hear all of my family members’ thoughts and determine what they were going to do before they did it.
