I never thought I’d be one of those girls.
You know, the kind that goes to her hot young professor’s office hours just to get a glimpse of him, to maybe even get an opportunity to bat her eyelashes and flirt with him.
But here I was, sitting in the very last row of seats in the lecture hall, staring at my professor’s ass as he wrote notes on the board, and thinking about how much I would give just to get a good grade in his class.
Chemistry was kicking my ass, and I knew my parents would have a shit fit if I failed.
They were already on my case about my grades, and if I didn’t do well on this next test, there was no way I would pass the class.
I needed extra credit, and badly.
Which is why I found myself approaching Professor Ethan after class and asking for just that.
"Hi," I said, clearing my throat and shifting uncomfortably from one foot to the other.
"Professor Ethan?"
He turned around slowly, a look of irritation on his face, before his eyes landed on me and it smoothed into a smile.
"Charlotte," he said, his voice low and smooth.
The Professor's Pet
"I was wondering if I could talk to you for a minute."
I stood awkwardly by his desk while he gathered his papers, my hands fidgeting with the strap of my backpack.
The classroom emptied out around us, the sound of footsteps and chatter growing fainter until we were the only ones left.
Professor Ethan took his time, carefully putting all of his papers in order before finally looking up at me.
His brown eyes met mine, and I had to look away.
"Is everything okay?"
He gestured to the chair beside his desk, and I sat down, the metal seat cold against my legs.
He leaned against his desk, close enough that I could smell his cologne.
It was spicy and masculine, and it made my heart race.
"So what can I do for you?" he asked, looking at me expectantly.
The Professor's Pet
I forced myself to meet his eyes again.
"I was just wondering if there was any way I could get some extra credit," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. Professor Ethan smiled slightly, drumming his fingers on the desk as he looked at me.
"Extra credit," he repeated.
"What makes you think you need extra credit?"
I swallowed hard.
"I’m not doing very well in this class," I admitted.
"And I really need to pass it."
He nodded thoughtfully, still drumming his fingers on the desk.
"I see," he said.
"Well, Charlotte, I’m afraid that I don’t give out extra credit very easily. But I do have an assignment that might interest you."
I leaned forward in my seat, eager to hear more.
"What is it?"
I asked.
He smiled again, a slow smile that spread across his face like honey dripping down a warm biscuit.
"It’s a research paper," he said.
The Professor's Pet
"On any topic related to chemistry that you choose. But it has to be at least ten pages long."
I pulled out my notebook and pen, ready to take notes.
"Okay," I said.
"I can do that."
Professor Ethan nodded, circling around his desk to grab a stack of papers.
He handed me one, and our fingers brushed as I took it from him.
The contact sent a shiver down my spine, and I quickly looked away, trying to compose myself.
He sat down in the chair across from me, the leather creaking softly as he settled into it.
"So what topic do you think you might be interested in?"
I shrugged, looking down at the paper in my hand.
"I’m not sure," I admitted.
The Professor's Pet
"There are so many interesting topics in chemistry."
"True," he agreed.
"But some are more interesting than others."
He leaned forward in his chair, his eyes locked on mine.
"Molecular bonding is always a popular choice," he said, his voice dropping lower as he spoke.
"The way that atoms come together to form compounds is fascinating. And then there’s chemical reactions. The way that substances interact with each other and change their composition is really quite amazing."
I nodded, jotting down some notes in my book.
"Yes, those both sound interesting," I said.
"But what about something a little more specific? Like physical chemistry?"
He raised an eyebrow at me, his eyes lingering on mine for just a moment too long before he looked away. "Physical chemistry," he repeated.
"That’s a good choice. It’s a very complex topic, but it’s also very rewarding to study. You could explore the different types of physical chemistry, like thermodynamics or quantum mechanics. Or you could delve deeper into one specific area, like the behavior of gases or the properties of solids."
I scribbled furiously in my notebook, trying to keep up with everything he was saying.
As I wrote, I couldn’t help but sneak glances at him out of the corner of my eye.
His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing toned forearms that made my mouth water.
I wondered what it would feel like to run my hands over them, to feel the muscles beneath his smooth skin.
The Professor's Pet
I forced myself to focus on what he was saying instead of on how sexy he was.
"Or you could explore the applications of physical chemistry," he continued.
"Like how it’s used in developing new materials or in pharmaceuticals," he suggested, his gaze steady on mine.
I nodded, my mind racing with possibilities. "That sounds really interesting, Professor," I said, trying to keep my voice from trembling. "I think I’ll start with the applications in pharmaceuticals."
