I was 20 and had the best job ever.
I got to wear one of the most iconic outfits and hairdos.
I was Princess Peach.
When I wasn’t working, I was at school to be a nurse.
When I wasn’t at school, I was at the gym or volunteering.
When I wasn’t volunteering, I was hanging out with my friends and family.
When I wasn’t hanging out with my friends and family, I was sleeping.
When I wasn’t sleeping, I was working and making kids laugh all day.
It was literally the perfect life and it made me so happy to see the kids light up when I or one of my girls walked by or took a picture.
I always loved my job and felt so lucky to have it, but some days stood out above the rest.
Some days made it almost impossible to keep the smile off my face even after I clocked out and went home.
Some days made me feel like I really was Princess Peach and we were in Mario Party 10.
Those days made it hard to not be Peach when I took the wig off and changed clothes.
The Princesses' Day
I was walking around the park, looking for my next picture when I saw two of my princesses.
They were near the castle, their hands clasped together tightly.
Janet and Kate.
They looked sad, so I walked over to them.
"Hey girls, what’s wrong?"
I asked, trying to cheer them up.
Janet managed a weak smile, but Kate just stared at the ground.
My Toad attendant pulled me aside and whispered something in my ear.
My heart broke.
They were JK and I had a big family trip planned to come here in a few weeks.

But on the way here, Fay was in an accident and now she was going to lose her life.
Tad was in the hospital and Uncle Mike took them for the day to try and distract them, but they weren’t having much luck cheering them up so far.
I excused myself to my break room and dabbed at my eyes with a tissue before checking my makeup in the mirror.
I took some deep breaths and adjusted my crown and smoothed out my pink dress.
I walked back out and knelt down to their eye level, my dress pooling around me on the pavement.
"Would you like to go on an adventure with Princess Peach?"
I asked softly.
Kate kept staring at the ground, but Janet gave a tiny nod.
I took their hands and guided them toward the Mushroom Kingdom area of the park.
My Toad attendant followed discreetly behind us, carrying water bottles and snacks.
First we went on the gentle Mario Kart ride.
The girls sat together in a rainbow-colored cart and I sat in front of them.
As we glided through the track, I heard Janet whisper something to Kate and she finally looked up.
When the ride ended, Kate asked if we could go again.
The Princesses' Day
"Of course," I said, smiling.
"But first, let’s get some snacks."
We walked over to my favorite snack stand - a colorful cart that sold rainbow cotton candy and star-shaped cookies.
I pretended to be torn between the two options, dramatically debating with myself which one to get.
Kate suddenly spoke up and suggested we get everything.
The Princesses' Day
I gasped in mock surprise and declared her a genius princess-in-training.
We got an assortment of treats - cotton candy, cookies, and chocolate mushrooms - and sat down on a nearby bench to enjoy our feast.
I told them silly stories about Bowser trying to cook dinner for his Koopa Troopas, making them laugh with my over-the-top expressions.
Kate started out with a small giggle, but when Janet joined in, she couldn’t help but snort with laughter.
After we finished eating, we went on the next ride - a gentle Ferris wheel.
The girls sat together in a basket and I sat across from them.
As we rose into the air, I pointed out the different sights around the park.
When we reached the top, I told them to look down at the castle gardens below.
"Look! The fireworks are setting up!"
I said, pointing to the technicians setting up the show.
"We have to get a good spot to watch."
I led them over to my special viewing spot - a cushioned bench near the castle gardens.
The girls sat on the bench and I settled in beside them, arranging my voluminous dress beside me.
As the first bursts of color exploded in the sky, Kate gripped Janet’s hand tightly.

I hummed the Mario theme song softly and they both looked at me.
I started singing it louder, encouraging them to join in.
When a golden shower of sparks rained down, Janet pointed excitedly and Kate leaned her head against my shoulder.
The finale lit up their faces with cascading blues and reds.
As the last firework faded, Janet turned to me, her small hand grasping the pink fabric of my dress.
Her eyes shone with unshed tears, but her smile was genuine.
Kate watched her sister, still holding her other hand.
I leaned down, my crown tilting slightly.
"Thank you for the best day ever," Janet whispered.
"You’re my favorite princess."
My heart swelled, but I maintained my princess composure.
I squeezed her shoulder gently and gave them both a royal curtsy.
Uncle Mike approached from behind, his eyes shining with gratitude.
"It’s time to go home now, girls," he said softly.
The Princesses' Day
I stood up, smoothing my dress and gave each sister a final royal wave.
As they walked away, still holding hands, I felt Princess Daisy’s hand on my shoulder.
I stood beside her, both of us waving as they grew smaller in the dimming park lights.
My arm felt heavy, but I kept waving until they disappeared around the corner near the Mushroom Kingdom gate.
When they finally vanished from sight, I saw Kate turn back one last time, her hand still clasped in Janet’s.
My white-gloved hand trembled mid-wave.
Princess Daisy squeezed my other hand, but I pulled away, turning so the guests couldn’t see my face.
The Princesses' Day
I ducked behind a decorative mushroom statue, my gloved hands pressed against the cool ceramic.
My shoulders shook in silent sobs as I watched Daisy wave at departing guests through the gaps between the mushroom spots.
When she turned to wave one final time at Janet and Kate, her yellow dress swishing, I saw she was completely unaware of my presence.
Tears streaked down my face, smudging my carefully applied makeup.
I fumbled in my dress pocket for tissues, trying to compose myself before more guests arrived.
The Princesses' Day
A family approached Daisy, distracting her, so I slipped away toward the character break room.
I pushed open the door, collapsing onto the worn couch.
My gloved hands still shook.
Princess Rosalina - Sarah from the night shift - was getting ready for the evening parade, her blonde hair styled in a high bun.
She saw my smeared makeup and sat beside me without a word.
I explained Janet and Kate’s story between sobs, my shoulders shaking.
Sarah listened attentively, her dark blue eyes filled with understanding.
When I finished, she gently helped me fix my makeup with practiced hands.
"You gave them magic today," she said softly, adjusting my crown.
"That’s what we’re here for."
Her calm presence steadied me.
The Princesses' Day
I glanced at the star wand she held, its glittering tip catching the fluorescent light and casting tiny sparkles on the wall.
"Sarah, have you ever felt like the magic we give is just as much for us as it is for them?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She paused, her eyes meeting mine in the mirror.
"Every single day," she replied, a knowing smile spreading across her face.
