I was once a poor maid, working for Madam Zhang and her family.
Who would have thought that one day I'd become the second concubine of President Tang?
My life had changed so much since then.
I had given birth to a son, and I was no longer the humble maid I used to be.
But sometimes, in the quiet of my room, I couldn't help but think of my life before President Tang.
I wondered how my sister-in-law, An Yu, was doing, and if she was taking good care of our little baby.
The thought of that baby always brought tears to my eyes.
I had grown to love him so much, even though he wasn't mine.
And every time I saw An Yu's smug face, I couldn't help but feel a pang of resentment in my heart.
She was my husband's first concubine, chosen before me.
I had been so nervous when I first met her; I could hardly look her in the eyes.
But as time went on, I grew to hate her for having that baby.
A week later, it was time for me to go back to President Tang's house.
As I packed my bags, Xiao Yang came to see me off.
He looked at me with those passionate eyes, just like he used to do before.
My heart skipped a beat as I tried to pull away from him.

I fold my silk dresses methodically, placing them in the leather suitcase.
The afternoon sun streams through the window, casting long shadows across the marble floor.
My hands tremble slightly as I arrange my jewelry box, hearing his footsteps approach closer.
The familiar scent of his cologne fills the air.
I busy myself with organizing my toiletries, pretending not to notice when he places his hand on the dresser beside me.

"Let me help you with that," he says softly, reaching for a dress.
I quickly snatch it away, accidentally dropping it on the floor.
My hands tremble as I reach for the fallen dress, its silk fabric pooled on the marble floor.
Xiao Yang moves at the same moment, his fingers brushing against mine as we both grasp the material.
I jerk back, pressing myself against the wardrobe while clutching the dress to my chest.
The room feels suffocating as he stands up slowly, his tall frame blocking the afternoon light from the window.
"Let me help you," he says, stepping closer.
I shake my head frantically, my voice barely a whisper as I respond, "Please leave."
Instead of moving away, he reaches for a loose strand of my hair.
"Why do you always push me away, Mei?" he asks, his voice tinged with frustration.
I swallow hard, my eyes darting to the door as I reply, "Because every time you come close, I remember what we lost."
His expression softens, and he murmurs, "We can still find a way back to each other, if you'd just let me in."
