Emma
witty, and resilient. After a difficult job search, she used her charm to impress a highranking official's son and recorded their encounter to negotiate a favor. Days later, she landed an unexpected internship at the White House. The secrecy surrounding her role and the unusual task of delivering CocaCola to the President's office intrigue her. She navigates the challenges of her new role with humor and spirit.
Dane
humorous, and laidback. Dane helps Emma celebrate her surprise internship at the White House, bringing donuts and joking about her unconventional methods to secure the opportunity. He teases her about her job without fully understanding the details. Despite this, he remains a source of camaraderie and levity in Emma's life, providing comic relief and solidarity with Emma's quick wit.
Recruiter
polite, and professional. He welcomes Emma to her new internship on her first day, providing a brief overview of her duties and expectations in a formal yet cordial manner. Although he doesn't offer much detail about the role's nature, he assures that the work will be challenging yet rewarding. His demeanor helps ease Emma into the mysterious atmosphere of her new work environment.
My name is Emma, and I'm a recent college graduate.
I've been looking for a job for two months.
I have almost given up hope when I finally receive an offer.
It's not for a job in my field, but rather one in a totally unexpected area.
I'm so surprised, I almost faint.
The story begins on a sunny afternoon in late June, when I'm working at the restaurant with my friends Dane and Chris.
Suddenly, Dane bursts into the kitchen, his face like a tomato.
"Emma! Guess what? Guess what happened? I just saw something on WeChat. Guess what it was! You'll never guess. You'll be completely surprised."
He laughs and puts the tray of drinks he's holding on the counter.
"What is it? What is it? Tell me."
I wipe my hands on my apron and stare at him.
"WeChat said you got a job at the White House! Is that true? Did you get that job?"
His eyes are big, and his smile is even bigger.
I almost laugh at the sight of him.
"What? The White House?"
I ask in surprise.
"Yes! Yes! You're going to work at the White House!"
He jumps up and down, clapping his hands like a total idiot.
I freeze for a moment, my heart pounding in my chest.
The noise of the kitchen fades away, and all I can hear is Dane's voice.
"Emma! Emma! Did you get that job?"
I fumble with my apron pocket, trying to find my phone.
My hands are shaking as I pull it out and swipe through the notifications.
There it is - an official email from the White House HR department.
I open it quickly, my fingers leaving greasy smudges on the screen.
The words blur together, but I catch a few phrases here and there - "accepted," "start date," "orientation."
My hands shake as I scroll through the email, trying to make sense of it all.
I remember that night with the official's son, the video I took, the subtle threat I made.
I never thought it would actually work. Dane leans over my shoulder, his eyes scanning the screen.
"What does it say? What does it say?"
He points at the words, his finger hovering over the screen.
I quickly close the email before he can read the details.
"It says I got a job at the White House," I reply, trying to keep my voice steady.
"That's amazing! Congratulations!"
He hugs me tightly, nearly knocking me off balance.
"Let's celebrate! Let's go out tonight!"
I nod, still in shock from the news.
"Okay. Okay. Let's go."
We leave the restaurant and head to a nearby bar, Dane still bubbling with excitement.
As we sit down at a table, he turns to me with a serious look on his face.
"Emma. Emma. You have to be careful. The White House is a big place. There are lots of important people there. You don't want to mess up."
"I know," I reply quietly.
"I'll be careful. I promise."
He nods and smiles again.
We follow Dane to our usual spot at Murphy's Bar.
The bartender greets us with a smile and brings our usual drinks - whiskey sours.
As we sip our drinks, Dane starts rambling about White House conspiracies and secret societies.
I tune him out, still riding the high of my acceptance email.
That's when I notice him - a man in a dark suit sitting alone at the end of the bar.
He looks out of place among the rowdy college students and young professionals.
He doesn't look away when I catch his eye.
Instead, he signals the bartender, who brings me a fresh napkin with my next drink.
Under the glass, I find a handwritten note: "Your real job starts tomorrow. Delete the video."
I fold the napkin, feeling the weight of my decision settle in.
