I was a nerdy, ugly, and stupid girl.
Well, at least that's what all the students in my school thought of me.
They made fun of me, called me names, and avoided me.
That was my life until the day I found the beverage on the floor.
That beverage was spiked with a magic potion.
Well, who would suspect that, right?
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Let me start from the beginning.
My name is Lily Hart.
Like I said, I'm a nerdy, ugly, and stupid girl.
Or at least that's what all the students in my school thought of me.
I was targeted by everyone.
Even though I looked older than my age, nobody took me seriously.
I was fourteen years old, but I looked like I was eighteen.
I had huge breasts that made all the boys stare at me.
Even though I hated the attention, I couldn't stop the boys from staring.
Or could I?
I wore loose clothes to cover my curves and avoided the boys as much as possible.
However, it wasn't until I drank that beverage that my life changed forever.
The beverage was blue and green with a mixture of colors.
It looked like a slushy with alcohol.
It had a big umbrella with fruits all over it.
The Potion of Beauty
I stared at the colorful drink on the cafeteria floor.
My hand hovered over it, not sure if I should pick it up.
The umbrella's plastic stem felt sticky against my fingers as I picked it up.
The students rushed past me, not paying attention to me or the cup.
None of them seemed to have dropped it or were looking for it.
The sweet aroma wafted up, making my mouth water.
I glanced at the clock; five minutes until class started.
My throat was dry from the morning's anxiety.
Looking around one last time, I brought the cup closer to my lips.
The icy liquid sloshed inside, decorated fruits bobbing against the straw.
The Potion of Beauty
Even though I was cautious by nature, something compelled me to taste it.
The liquid tasted like melted cotton candy mixed with mint.
The sweetness coated my tongue and the back of my mouth.
I sucked harder, letting the cold liquid slide down my throat.
As soon as it hit my stomach, heat bloomed inside me.
It radiated outward, spreading to my limbs.
My skin prickled with goosebumps, and my hands started to tremble.
The empty cup slipped from my fingers, clattering on the cafeteria floor.
I grabbed the edge of the nearest table to steady myself as waves of dizziness washed over me.
The fluorescent lights above seemed to pulse and brighten.
My heart pounded faster, and sweat beaded on my forehead.
The Potion of Beauty
Through blurry vision, I saw other students starting to stare at me, but I couldn't focus on their faces.
The room spun faster and faster, and I gripped the edge of the table harder.
My knuckles turned white, but I didn't care.
I needed something to anchor me to this reality.
The students' whispers grew louder, sounding like a swarm of bees buzzing in my ears.
Their footsteps echoed like thunder as they moved around me.
My legs wobbled beneath me, and I tried to focus on the exit doors.
However, they kept shifting position, making my head spin even more.
The fluorescent lights above pulsed with rainbow halos, making my head throb.
Someone called my name—maybe Emily—but it sounded warped and far away.
I took one shaky step toward what I thought was the direction of the hallway, but my shoes squeaked against the linoleum floor like nails on a chalkboard.
The Potion of Beauty
My vision swam, and I lurched toward the exit, bumping into chairs and tables.
The metal door handle seemed to dance in front of me, making it impossible to grab.
I knocked over someone's lunch tray, sending food scattering across the floor.
Students jumped back, their faces warping like funhouse mirrors.
My sweaty palm finally connected with the cold metal, but my fingers refused to cooperate.
The Potion of Beauty
I slid down against the door, my legs giving out completely.
The last thing I saw was Emily's concerned face hovering over me as darkness crept in from the edges of my vision.
"Lily, are you okay?"
A familiar voice called my name.
It sounded distant and warped, like someone was speaking through a tunnel.
I blinked, trying to clear the haze from my vision.
The voice grew louder and closer, and I realized it belonged to Jake Anderson.
He was the captain of the football team, and his family practically owned the town of Rosewood.
I'd never spoken to him before, but I'd seen him in the hallways.
His hand rested on my shoulder, and it felt impossibly warm against my cool skin.
I tried to focus on that sensation, hoping it would keep me conscious.
His arm wrapped around my waist, taking most of my weight as I continued to shake.
The Potion of Beauty
The other students parted like water as Jake half-carried me through the cafeteria.
My head lolled against his chest, and I caught the scent of his cologne mixed with the cotton candy taste still lingering in my mouth.
Each step sent jolts through my body, making the fluorescent lights above pulse and dance.
Finally, we reached the nurse's office, and Jake helped me onto the cot in the back room.
As I lay there, the world faded to black, leaving only the echo of his voice in my mind.
The Potion of Beauty
"Lily, can you open your eyes for me?"
A wrinkled face hovered above mine, and I blinked rapidly, trying to clear the haze.
The nurse's cool fingers pressed against my wrist, taking my pulse.
The scratchy paper covering the vinyl cot crinkled beneath me as I tried to sit up.
My head still throbbed, but the rainbow lights and spinning had stopped.
Jake leaned against the wall by the door, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched me with an intensity I'd never seen before.
"Can you tell me what happened?"
The nurse asked, her voice firm but gentle.
I swallowed hard, trying to remember.
"I...I ate something."
The Potion of Beauty
"What did you eat?"
She asked, her eyes flicking between me and Jake.
"A slushy. It tasted like cotton candy."
"Did you get it from the cafeteria?" she asked, her pen poised over her clipboard.
I nodded slowly.
The Potion of Beauty
"Do you remember who gave it to you?"
"No...I found it on a table."
I left out the part about how I'd been staring at Emily's lunch tray when I'd seen it.
The nurse scribbled some notes on her clipboard before turning to take my temperature.
"I'm going to get some paperwork for you to fill out, and then I'll be back," she said, disappearing behind the door.
I heard her muffled voice talking to someone else, probably Jake.
He pushed off the wall and stepped closer to my cot, his eyes locked on me.
The nurse's office was small, with just enough room for the vinyl cot and a plastic chair beside it.
Jake sat in the chair, his knee brushing against the thin mattress.
"That drink you had," he said, leaning forward.
"I saw someone put it down earlier."
My heart raced faster at his words.
"Do you know who?"
I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
The Potion of Beauty
"No...but I can tell you what they looked like. It was a tall guy in a dark hoodie. He came into the cafeteria just before lunch ended. I saw him leave the slushy on the table by the soda machine."
Jake's eyes narrowed as he studied my face.
"Are you okay? You look like you're going to pass out again."
"I'm fine," I said automatically.
But my mind reeled with possibilities.
Who could have spiked my drink?
And why?
"It might have been an accident," Jake continued.
"I've seen people spike each other's drinks at parties before. Maybe this was just a prank gone wrong."
I nodded slowly, but something about that explanation didn't sit right.
"Listen...if you want, I can try to help you figure out who did it. The school has security cameras in the cafeteria. We can look at the footage together." My throat went dry as I stared at Jake.
Why would he care about me?
He'd never even noticed me before today.
But something about his expression made me nod slowly.
"Okay," I whispered.
He pulled his phone from his pocket and tapped on the screen.
A moment later, he turned it toward me so I could see what he'd found.
"It looks like there are four cameras in the cafeteria—two by the doors, one by the soda machine, and one by the food line."
He pointed to each location on the screen as he spoke.
"There are some blind spots near the tables by the windows. Whoever did this might have tried to take advantage of that."
The Potion of Beauty
My fingers brushed against his as he handed me his phone so I could study the layout more closely.
