I was in the library when I got the letter from unknown.
It was about the boy I liked. The boy I had a crush on for years.
The boy I liked and never knew that he liked me back until I read the letter.
The letter said, 'I want you, I need you, Emily. I must kiss you. Meet me tomorrow in a private place.'
My hands were shaking after reading the letter.
I hid my face because I was afraid that someone would see my happy expression.
He likes me.
The boy I liked for years finally admitted that he liked me too.
What should I do?
Should I meet him tomorrow?
But...
He was well-known as a player.
What if...
No!
I must meet him!
I wanted him!
I needed him!
I must kiss him!
Okay, I would meet him tomorrow.
But where was the private place?
Wait!
I forgot to read the rest of the letter.
'I want you, I need you, Emily. I must kiss you. Meet me tomorrow at the hill in our college.'
The hill?
Okay, that's a private place.
I would meet him there tomorrow.
Then...what?
Is he really interested in me?
Or...
No!I won't think about it.
I must meet him!
I wanted to know whether he liked me or not.
If...
I would stop liking him!
Okay, that's enough.
I would meet him tomorrow and see what would happen next.
After reading the letter, my mind was confused.
I didn't know what to do and think.
But one thing was sure.
I liked him.
And I would meet him tomorrow.
I clutched the letter to my chest and looked around the library.
I made sure no one saw my flushed face.
Then, I walked to a secluded corner in the library, between the history shelves.
I pulled out my phone and sent a text message to my best friend Lily.
My fingers hovered on the keyboard for a few minutes, but I couldn't think of what to type.
After three attempts, I finally typed, 'Got a letter from Jake. Wants to meet tomorrow.'
Lily responded immediately with a string of messages: 'Don't go!
He's a player.
He's just playing with you.
He likes someone else!
Emily, don't go!
I silenced my phone after reading Lily's messages.
She was right.
But I didn't want to listen.
I stood up and gathered all my books.
I walked to my dorm room after dinner.
I slipped out of my dorm room with a flashlight in my hand.
My roommate was studying in her bed.
She asked, 'Where are you going?'
I told her, 'I'm going for a walk.'
It was an autumn evening.
The air was cold and biting.
I wore a thin jacket, but it didn't help much.
I walked to the college hill.
The hill was dimly lit by streetlights.
The grass was wet from the morning dew.
I stood on the top of the hill and looked around.
Jake told me to meet him tomorrow in a private place, but he didn't say where exactly.
So, I had to guess where he would be waiting for me.
There was a wooden bench at the side of the hill, hidden behind some trees and bushes.
It was secluded from the rest of the hill and surrounded by tall trees that blocked out most of the light from the streetlights.
I walked towards the bench and sat down on it. It smelled like wood and leaves, damp from the rain last night.
The bench looked old and worn from years of weathering through all four seasons.
There were no signs that Jake had been here before, except...
Behind the bench, I found some cigarette butts on the ground, fresh and not yet rotten away by rain or time.
Jake smoked, so maybe he had been here before?
But that still didn't mean that he would be here tomorrow or that he wanted to meet me here specifically.
Then...what?
My eyes scanned the area around the bench again, looking for any other signs that Jake might have left behind to tell me that this was where he wanted to meet me.
That's when I saw it...a pink hair tie lying on the ground next to the bench.
It looked familiar...because Ashley from his study group always wore hair ties like that one in her hair.
So...
Maybe...
He wanted to meet me here?
And maybe...
He wanted to kiss me?
A twig snapped behind me, making me jump in surprise. I quickly ducked behind a tree before I could see who it was coming up the hill or what they wanted.
I held my breath, heart pounding, as I waited to see who would emerge from the shadows.
I pressed my back against the rough bark of the tree, holding still as the footsteps got closer and closer.
A beam of light swept across the ground in front of me, casting long shadows from the trees and leaves.
The light stopped on the bench and then moved to the side, where I was hiding.
I held still, hoping that whoever it was wouldn't see me.
The light paused on a spot just a few feet away from me, then moved again to the bench.
A figure emerged from the darkness, wearing a black jacket and jeans.
It was Jake!
I recognized him from his profile and sharp features illuminated by the phone flashlight in his hand.
He walked to the bench and sat down, checking his watch in the dim light.
I watched as he pulled out a cigarette and lighter from his jacket pocket.
The flame briefly lit up his face as he lit his cigarette.
"Emily, I know you're there," Jake said, exhaling smoke into the crisp night air.
I stepped out from behind the tree, my heart racing. "How did you know?"
He didn't answer, just gestured to the empty space next to him on the bench.
The cigarette smoke curled up into the air between us, and I caught a whiff of his cologne - something woodsy and expensive.
I hesitated for a moment, studying his face in the dim light, then moved forward.
My legs felt heavy as I forced myself to walk toward him.
The wet leaves crunched under my shoes as I walked.
The old wooden bench creaked when I lowered myself onto it, leaving careful inches between us.
Jake took another long drag of his cigarette, the ember glowing bright orange in the darkness.
I gripped the edge of the bench tightly with my fingers, finding the same damp spot I'd touched earlier when I sat down.
"Emily," Jake said softly, "there's something you need to know."
He took one last drag, then stubbed out his cigarette on the ground, sending up a little puff of smoke.
He shifted closer to me on the bench, his knee bumping against mine.
The old wood creaked beneath us as he leaned in, his warm breath tickling my ear.
"I've been watching you for months in the library," he whispered, and I felt shivers run down my spine.
His hand found mine in the darkness, fingers intertwining softly.
The beam of the flashlight flickered as it fell to the ground at our feet, casting an eerie glow over our intertwined hands.
I couldn't see his face in the dim light, but I felt his eyes fixed intensely on me.
The trees rustled above us as the wind picked up, sending dead leaves falling around us like confetti.
Jake's face moved closer to mine, lips parting slightly as if ready to speak or...something else?
"Emily," he murmured, his voice barely audible over the rustling leaves, "I think Ashley knows about us."
I pulled back slightly, my heart skipping a beat. "What do you mean she knows?"
