I was the only daughter, which meant I was the only heir to the throne.
Because of that, I had been given my own personal knight.
He had been with me since I was a child, and now that I was older, he was even more protective.
Sometimes I felt like he was suffocating me.
I longed to be free.
But those were thoughts for another time.
Now, I just wanted to take a walk around the palace.
I had ordered my knight to stay behind, which made him angry, but I needed some time to myself.
As I walked around the first corner, I ran into the court jester.
He was sitting on the ground with his legs spread out in front of him.
He had a small drum between his legs and was playing a slow melody.
When he saw me, he stopped and gave me a large smile before he bowed down to the ground.
"Your Highness," he said.
I reached out and touched his shoulder.
"It's alright; you can get up."
He stood and looked at me with his blue eyes, giving me a smile that made my heart skip a beat.
"What are you doing out here alone?"
he asked.
"I'm just taking a walk," I told him.
"I didn't want my knight to follow me."
The jester nodded his head.
"I understand. It can get quite suffocating when people are always watching your every move."
"Can you play something else for me?"
I asked him.
He nodded his head and started playing a fast song.
I leaned forward to hear what he was whispering as he played.
"Follow me, Princess," he whispered.
My heart started beating fast as I wondered what he was up to.
When he was done playing, he set his drum aside and stood up.
He gave me a smile and then turned around and started walking away.
He turned his head back to look at me and gestured for me to follow him.
I followed him until we reached a tapestry that was hanging on the stone wall.
He reached out and touched the woven fabric with his fingers.
They moved along the fabric until they caught on a slight ridge.
He looked over his shoulder to make sure no one was watching us, then he pulled the fabric aside to reveal a small doorway.
The air coming from the doorway smelled musty, like it hadn't been disturbed in years.
The jester held out his hand for me to take.
I looked at him and then at the doorway, wondering where it led.
I hesitate at the threshold, my silk slippers scraping against the worn stone as Finn's warm hand steadies mine.
The passage beyond the tapestry is dim, lit only by thin shafts of light that filter through cracks in the ancient walls.
Dust motes dance in these beams, and I watch them twirl as Finn pulls me gently forward.
The air is stale and musty, tickling my nose with its age.
I gather my skirts to keep them from dragging on the dusty floor as we make our way deeper into the passage.
My eyes adjust slowly to the dim light, and I can make out crude stone steps descending into shadow.
The passage is narrow - barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side.
"Where does this lead, Finn?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the echo of our footsteps.
"To a place where secrets are kept safe," he replied, his tone serious for once, a stark contrast to his usual playful demeanor.
"And why are you showing me this now?" I asked, sensing that whatever lay ahead would change everything.
The passage narrows until our shoulders brush against the damp stone walls.
Finn's hand remains steady in mine as we pause at a small alcove where a shaft of light streams through a high window.
His fingers release mine as he turns to face me, his usual playful expression replaced with an intensity I've never seen before.
I catch my breath as he reaches up, his calloused fingertips hesitating near my temple.
The torch's flickering light casts dancing shadows across his face while he gently brushes aside a lock of hair that has fallen across my cheek.
My skin tingles where his fingers graze it.
I lean against the damp wall, watching as his fingers trail down to trace the rough stone beside us.
His hand moves in a pattern, pressing certain spots, and I hear a grinding noise as a section of wall shifts inward.
Behind it lies a wooden door, its hinges rusted from age and moisture.
Finn's shoulders tense as he grips the iron handle.
The serious look in his eyes makes me step closer, my dress brushing against his leg.
When I place my hand over his on the handle, he doesn't pull away.
Instead, he squeezes my fingers and whispers those words that make my pulse quicken.
