I was a boy who had just joined an allgirls school.
It was weird, I know.
But I was also a victim.
My parents died in a car crash, and the school was the only one that would accept me.
So I became Zen Fritz, the only boy in the school.
Black loving boy with messy hair and a cut build.
I was handsome, or so they told me.
I had a resting face, which made people think that I was angry or upset.
But I wasn't, I was just trying to get by.
Then there were two girls who caught my attention.
They were both beautiful, but in different ways.
One had long black hair in a ponytail and was the senior student of the school and leader of the popular clique.
She wore skirts and knee-high socks under her uniform, and her name was Lily Chen.
The other had long black braids and was an outcast student who sat alone at lunch.
She wore glasses and a uniform, and her name was Ava Torres.
They both wanted me, but for different reasons.
Lily wanted me because she could, and Ava wanted me because she needed me.
At first, I didn't want either of them.
But then I started to hang out with Lily, and realized that she wasn't as bad as she seemed.
We became friends, and we would talk about our days.
I learned that she wasn't just a mean girl, but a protective one.
The Only Boy
She was protective of her friends and her school, and she would do anything to keep them safe.
And then there was Ava, who I started to hang out with too.
I learned that she was an orphan who had been in foster care for most of her life.
She had been in and out of different homes, and never really found a place where she belonged.
But then she came to our school, and she found a home.
She found a group of girls who accepted her for who she was, and they became like a family to her.
I realized that Lily wasn't the only one who was protective of the school, Ava was too.
She just showed it in different ways.
And I realized that I had feelings for both of them, but in different ways.
I felt a brotherly love for Lily, and a romantic love for Ava.
The Only Boy
I didn't know what to do with my feelings, so I kept them to myself.
I knew that Lily would never feel the same way about me, and Ava was still getting used to having friends.
"Zen," Lily said, her voice softer than usual, "I know you care about Ava more than just a friend."
I hesitated, glancing at Ava who was watching us with curious eyes.
"It's true," Ava admitted quietly, "and I think I might feel the same way about you."
The Only Boy
I stood in the empty classroom, the only sound the ticking of the clock.
Lily's hands were trembling, and I could see the pain in her eyes.
I knew that she had been hurt before, and I didn't want to hurt her again.
But I also knew that I couldn't deny my feelings for Ava.
"I'm sorry, Lily," I said gently, "but my heart belongs to Ava."
Lily nodded, her face pale.
She turned away from me, gripping the edge of a desk tightly.
I could see the tears welling up in her eyes, and I felt a pang of guilt.
I didn't want to hurt her, but I couldn't deny my feelings for Ava.
"Zen," Lily said softly, her voice breaking.
The Only Boy
"I thought we had something special. You're the only boy in this school, and you're supposed to be mine."
I took a step back, feeling uncomfortable with the possessive way she was talking about me.
"I'm sorry, Lily," I said again, "but my heart belongs to Ava."
Lily turned to me, her eyes filled with tears.
She reached out and touched my arm, her touch sending shivers down my spine.
"You're making a mistake," she whispered.
"Ava isn't good enough for you. She's not like us."
I looked at her confused, not understanding what she meant by "not like us."
"What do you mean?"
I asked softly. Lily sighed and pulled her hand away from me.
She looked at me with a serious expression on her face.
"Ava is different from us," she said slowly.
"She's innocent and pure. She doesn't have the same scars as us."
I realized what she meant now.
Ava had been through a lot in her life, but she was still innocent and pure at heart.
She didn't have the same scars as us because she hadn't experienced the same things that we had.
I felt a pang of guilt for what I had done to Lily.
I knew that I had hurt her by rejecting her feelings for me.
But I couldn't help how I felt about Ava.
"I'm sorry, Lily," I said softly, reaching out to touch her shoulder gently.
The Only Boy
"I never meant to hurt you."
Lily shrugged my hand off and turned away from me again.
She walked over to the door and stopped before turning around to look at me one last time.
"I'm sorry, Lily," I said softly.
"I really am."
But Lily just shook her head and walked out of the classroom, leaving me standing there feeling confused and guilty.
I stood there for a few minutes, trying to process what had just happened.
I knew that I had hurt Lily by rejecting her feelings for me.
But I couldn't help how I felt about Ava.
I walked out of the classroom and went to find Ava.
She was sitting in the courtyard, looking sad.
I sat down next to her and put my arm around her shoulders.
"Hey," I said softly.
The Only Boy
"What's wrong?"
Ava shrugged my arm off and looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"I feel bad about what happened with Lily," she said softly.
"I didn't mean to hurt her."
I nodded understandingly and put my arm back around her shoulders. "It's okay," I said softly.
"It's not your fault. Lily is just upset because she likes you."
Ava looked at me doubtfully.
"But you rejected her feelings for me."
I nodded again.
"I know, but it's not your fault. Lily needs to learn to accept rejection. She can't always get what she wants."
Ava nodded and leaned against me.
We sat there in silence for a while, watching the sun set behind the trees.
Then Ava spoke up again.
"Zen," she said softly, "can I ask you something?"
"Of course," I replied softly.
"What do you want to ask?"
Ava looked at me uncertainly.
"Do you think that you could ever love me?"
I looked at her surprised.
"Of course, Ava," I said softly.
"I already do."
Ava smiled shyly and leaned against me again.
We sat there in silence for a while longer, watching the stars come out in the sky above us.
Then Ava spoke up again.
"Zen," she said softly, "can I ask you something else?"
"Of course," I replied softly.
"What do you want to ask?"
Ava looked at me uncertainly again.
"Do you think that we could ever be together? Like boyfriend and girlfriend?"
I looked at her surprised again, but this time it was different.
The Only Boy
This time, it was because I didn't know if I could answer yes or no. "Lily," I called out as she reached the door of the empty classroom where we had just had our heart-to-heart conversation about Ava and me.
"I hope you find someone who deserves your heart."
She stopped in her tracks and turned to look at me, the fading light of the day casting a golden glow on her face.
I could see the tears streaming down her cheeks, and I knew that I had hurt her.
But as I looked at Ava, who was standing next to me with her hand trembling in mine, I knew that I was making the right choice.
I reached out and wiped away a tear that had fallen onto Ava's cheek with my thumb.
"I want to be with you," I said firmly, squeezing her hand in mine.
"No more hesitation, no more doubt."
Ava nodded, a small smile appearing on her lips.
Behind us, the classroom door slammed shut, and I knew that Lily was still watching us from the other side.
"I just hope she understands," Ava whispered, glancing back at the door.
"She will, in time," I reassured her, though I wasn't entirely sure myself.
The Only Boy
"Let's give her space and focus on us for now," Ava suggested, squeezing my hand gently.
