Lies.
The ocean of lies that I have been swimming in my entire life.
How could I not have known this?
How could I not have seen it?
Was I really that naive?
I always thought that everyone knew everyone in this small town.
That there were no secrets here and that everyone spoke their mind.
But the truth is far from it.
My mother had a secret, one that will change my life forever.
One that will make me see everything differently, make me see her differently even in death.
I never knew who my father was, at least not until today.
My mother always told me that my father was a mistake, something that she regretted and would never want to speak of.
Something that she would never let me meet.
The Ocean Between Us
I walked through the cemetery, the gravel crunching under my feet as I made my way to her grave.
The air was heavy with the scent of damp earth and freshly cut grass.
I knelt beside the headstone, tracing her name with my fingers.
"Mom," I whispered, "why didn't you tell me about him?"
The wind rustled through the leaves of the nearby trees, as if urging me to continue.
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her secrets pressing down on me.
"I need to know who he is."
I said aloud, hoping for some sign or guidance.
The Ocean Between Us
I stood up, brushing the dirt from my knees.
As I turned to leave, I noticed a figure leaning against a nearby tree.
It was Cameron, his arms crossed and his eyes fixed intently on me.
"Ava," he called softly, stepping forward.
I hesitated for a moment, then approached him.
"I heard you," he said gently, nodding toward my mother's grave.
"There's something you need to know."
My heart raced as he reached into his jacket and pulled out a crumpled envelope.
"This was in my father's things," he explained, handing it to me.
