I am Princess Eleonor, the youngest and only daughter of King Alain and Queen Léonie.
I have three older brothers: Prince Alain, Prince Louis, and Prince Henri.
We dwell in a vast kingdom encircled by an immense forest, as beautiful as it is enigmatic.
The forest is full of secrets and legends.
Some people even say that it is home to vampires.
Of course, no one really believes it.
After all, who believes in vampires?
Well, I do.
You see, I know something that nobody else knows.
The forest has a secret, a secret so big that it can change the life of anyone who dares to enter the forest at night.
I know this because one night, I saw them.
I was so curious about the forest that I decided to sneak out of the castle and go to the edge of the forest, which is just about half a mile from our castle.
I didn’t dare go inside; I was too scared.
But I wanted to see what was on the other side of the huge trees that form the border of the forest.
The Northern Forest
My heart was pounding, and I was standing still, looking at the forest.
The moonlight was casting long shadows through the trees, and it was hard to see what was on the other side.
I slowly turned my head towards the sound, careful not to make any sudden movements.
The rustling grew louder, closer.
Leaves crunched under approaching footsteps.
I considered running back to the castle, but I knew that any quick movement would only draw attention to myself.
So I pressed myself against a wide oak tree, its rough bark scratching my back through my thin nightgown.
The footsteps stopped.
As the footsteps halted, I remained still, hidden behind the oak.
The forest was eerily silent again, the only sound my shallow breaths.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, and I hoped that whoever it was couldn’t hear it too.
Slowly, I edged out from behind the tree, scanning the shadows for any sign of movement.
But there was nothing.
The rustling had stopped, and the forest was quiet once more.
I took a step forward, my bare feet sinking into the soft earth.
The air was cool and damp, carrying the scent of decaying leaves and damp soil.
I shivered, despite the warmth of the summer night.
Suddenly, a chill ran down my spine as if someone had brushed a cold finger against my neck.
The Northern Forest
I spun around, expecting to see someone standing behind me, but there was no one there.
The sensation lingered, though, leaving me feeling unsettled and on edge. I considered turning back to the castle then and there.
But something kept me rooted to the spot.
Curiosity?
Fear?
Or maybe something else entirely?
I took another step forward, peering into the darkness ahead of me.
The trees seemed to loom over me now, casting long shadows that stretched like skeletal fingers across the ground.
My heart pounded harder in my chest as I strained to hear any sound that might indicate what had caused that strange sensation on my neck.
But there was nothing.
The Northern Forest
Just silence and darkness and an eerie feeling that I was being watched by unseen eyes.
And then it happened again: another cold touch against my skin, this time on my arm.
It was light as a feather but unmistakable in its intent.
The Northern Forest
The distant shouts of my name echoed through the trees, accompanied by the flickering torchlight of castle guards.
I pressed myself against the oak's rough bark, torn between staying to uncover the source of those phantom touches and heeding the urgent calls.
My fingers absently traced the spot on my neck where the cold sensation lingered, leaving a trail of goosebumps in its wake.
The guards' voices grew closer, their boots crunching through fallen leaves as they searched for me.
I watched through the branches as the torches danced, casting eerie shadows on the trees.
The cold sensation on my neck persisted, a constant reminder of the inexplicable encounter.
But the guards' voices held a note of worry, their shouts growing more urgent.
I recognized one voice among them - Henri, my father's most trusted guard and a man who had known me since childhood.
He called my name with a mix of concern and relief.
I hesitated for a moment, weighing my options.
The darkness between the trees seemed to beckon me, promising secrets and mysteries beyond the castle walls.
But the guards were closing in, and I knew that staying would only lead to trouble.
With a heavy sigh, I made my decision.
Stepping away from the tree, I waved to catch their attention.
The Northern Forest
Henri saw me first, his weathered face breaking into a relieved smile as he rushed towards me.
"Princess Eleonor," he said, his voice gruff with emotion.
"What are you doing out here? You know it's not safe."
"I'm sorry," I replied, feeling a mix of guilt and defiance.
"I just wanted to see what was on the other side."
Henri wrapped his cloak around my shoulders, shielding me from the night chill.
"You know better than that," he scolded gently.
"The forest is full of dangers. You could have been hurt." I nodded, feeling a bit ashamed but also curious about what had happened to me in those woods.
As we walked back to the castle, I glanced over my shoulder at the darkness between the trees.
For a moment, I thought I saw movement - a shadow darting between branches or perhaps just the play of torchlight on leaves.
The Northern Forest
But when I turned back to look again, there was nothing but darkness and silence.
Henri guided me back through the castle's side entrance, trying his best to be discreet so as not to draw attention from other guards or servants.
He escorted me all the way to my chamber door, his concerned gaze lingering on me until I stepped inside.
I closed the door behind me, leaning against it for a moment as I tried to make sense of what had happened in the forest.
The cold spot on my neck still lingered, a constant reminder of the inexplicable encounter.
I changed into my nightgown and climbed into bed, but sleep eluded me.
My mind raced with questions and doubts, replaying every moment of those strange touches in the darkness.
The moonlight streamed through my window, casting long shadows across the room.
I tossed and turned, feeling both exhausted and wide awake at the same time.
Finally, I threw off the covers and got out of bed.
Walking over to my vanity, I lit a candle and sat down in front of the mirror.
I examined my neck closely, searching for any sign of what had touched me. But there was nothing - no marks or bruises, just a faint trail of goosebumps where the cold sensation had lingered.
The Northern Forest
I sighed, running my fingers through my hair in frustration.
What had happened to me in those woods?
And who - or what - could have caused those strange touches?
As I sat there, lost in thought, I noticed something else peculiar.
The candle's flame seemed to flicker more than usual, casting eerie shadows on the walls around me.
It was as if something was moving just out of sight, watching me from the darkness.
I shivered again, despite the warmth of the night.
Suddenly, sleep felt like a distant memory.
But eventually, exhaustion won out over curiosity and fear.
I blew out the candle and crawled back into bed, letting myself drift off into a restless slumber. My dreams were filled with moving shadows and cold touches on my skin.
The Northern Forest
When I woke up at dawn, I felt drained but determined.
After a quick wash with cold water and dressing in a simple tunic, I made my way through the castle's empty corridors.
Most of the inhabitants were still asleep, and I preferred it that way.
The less attention I drew to myself, the better.
I headed towards the library, located in one of the castle's oldest wings.
The heavy wooden door creaked as I pushed it open, revealing a room filled with towering shelves that stretched all the way to the vaulted ceiling.
The air inside was thick with dust and the musty scent of old parchment.
I walked down the center aisle, my footsteps echoing off the stone walls.
The library was divided into sections - history, literature, philosophy, and more.
I knew exactly where I needed to go: the historical section, where ancient leather-bound books held stories of local legends and forgotten lore. My fingers trailed over the spines of the books as I searched for a particular title.
Finally, I found it: "Chronicles of the Northern Woods," bound in worn leather with intricate golden filigree on its cover.
The Northern Forest
I pulled it from its shelf and carried it to a reading table near a large window.
The sunlight streaming through the glass illuminated the dust motes dancing in the air as I carefully opened the book.
Its pages were yellowed with age and crackled softly as I turned them.
I began scanning the text, searching for any mention of strange occurrences or encounters similar to what had happened to me in those woods.
As I read, my eyes widened with fascination and a touch of fear.
There were accounts of shadowy figures seen darting between trees, cold touches on unsuspecting travelers, and whispers in the darkness that seemed to come from nowhere. My heart raced as I read about similar encounters from fifty years ago - tales of people who had ventured into those woods and never returned.
Some said they were taken by spirits or demons lurking in the shadows; others believed they stumbled upon hidden paths leading deep into ancient ruins or secret realms beyond our world.
The more I read, the more questions swirled in my mind.
Was there truth to these stories?
And if so, what did they have to do with what had happened to me?
The Northern Forest
Suddenly, I heard footsteps approaching outside the library door.
I quickly closed the book, my heart pounding as I turned to see who it was.
The door creaked open, and my brother, Prince Alaric, stepped inside with a curious look on his face.
"Eleonor," he said gently, casting a glance at the book in my hands, "since when have you taken to reading? Especially tales of history?" Alaric let out a nasally chuckle.
