When I was just a kid, my family couldn't pay the tax they owed Avaloria, so they sold me to one of the richest noble families in Avaloria, the Highthorns.
That day, my father and mother came to say goodbye to me before they left Avaloria.
They had a carriage waiting for them, and as they hugged me tightly before they let go, my mother cried as she handed me a small pouch with some gold coins in it.
"Please take care of yourself, Akari," my mother said to me as she gently stroked my cheek.
My father looked at me for a bit before he said anything.
"Akari, please don't think that we sold you off because we don't like you. You know how hard it is for us to live in Avaloria, and we can't pay the tax we owed them, so we had no choice but to sell you off. Please forgive us," my father told me as he looked at me with sad eyes before he hugged me tightly and let go.
I didn't say anything as I looked at them with cold eyes before I turned around and walked off towards the castle as they got on the carriage and left Avaloria.
When I arrived at the castle, they began training me in order to make me one of their guards.
The Noble's Guard
I stood there at the castle gates, watching the carriage get smaller and smaller as it drove off into the dusty road.
The pouch of gold coins felt heavy in my palm, each piece of gold a reminder of how desperate my parents were.
A guard grabbed my shoulder roughly, spinning me around to face the towering stone walls of my new prison.
The Highthorn family crest loomed above - a golden hawk clutching a rose.
Two young girls peered down from a high window, their blonde hair catching the sunlight.
The taller one pointed and whispered something to her sister, who giggled.
My fingers clenched around the coin pouch as the guard steered me through the servant's entrance.
"Do you think she'll last long?" the taller girl asked, her voice carrying a hint of curiosity mixed with disdain.
"Father says they never do," the younger one replied, her eyes still fixed on me as if I were some sort of exotic creature.
"But this one looks different," the older sister mused, a sly smile playing on her lips.
The Noble's Guard
I didn't know what they were talking about, but I knew that they were talking about me.
I stood there for a bit, looking at the ground before I followed the guard into the castle.
The guard led me to the servant's dining hall, where he told me to go and eat something.
I sat down at a table in the corner, mechanically spooning the bland porridge into my mouth as I kept my eyes down.
A young maid with kind eyes approached, pretending to wipe the table beside me.
The Noble's Guard
As she worked, her hand brushed against mine, leaving behind a folded scrap of parchment.
My heart jumped, but I kept my expression cold and indifferent.
I carefully slid the note into my sleeve, not daring to look up at her.
The maid continued her rounds, but I caught her giving me a subtle smile as she moved on to the next table. Later that night, after finishing my duties, I retreated to my cramped quarters in the servant's wing.
The room was small, with a thin mattress on the floor and a single window that let in the faint moonlight.
As I sat down on the mattress, my heel caught on a loose floorboard.
I pressed down on it, and to my surprise, it sounded hollow underneath.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I lifted the mattress to investigate.
The worn wooden plank creaked as I pried it up, revealing a shallow space beneath.
The Noble's Guard
Something glinted in the faint light - a delicate silver chain with an emerald pendant, and beside it lay a folded piece of parchment, yellowed with age.
My hands trembled as I reached for them, wondering who had left these treasures here and why.
Before I could unfold the letter, footsteps echoed in the hallway outside my door.
I quickly concealed the pendant and parchment, my heart pounding as I prepared to face whatever came next.
I pressed myself flat against the wall behind my door, barely daring to breathe.
The faint shadow of a head fell across the floor, cast by the dim light in the hallway.
Through the narrow gap between the door and frame, I caught glimpses of elegant silk and blonde hair.
The owner of those footsteps was trying to peer into my room, their fingers curled around the doorframe, hesitating.
The floorboard with its hidden treasures seemed to burn in my mind, making my pulse quicken.
The Noble's Guard
The person outside shifted their weight, causing the old wooden floor to creak.
They whispered something under their breath, too quiet for me to catch.
Finally, they withdrew their hand and stepped back into the hallway.
