I was in the middle of taking down some thugs in an alleyway when I heard the breaking and entering of a nearby mansion.
I finished off the thugs, webbing them up to let the cops find them later, then swung off to investigate the mansion.
It didn’t take me long to get there and once I did, I found two women in cat burglar outfits breaking into a display case.
One was none other than Black Cat, but the other… I didn’t recognize.
"Hey!"
I yelled, dropping down behind some plants so they wouldn’t see me.
"What’s all this?"
"Ah, Spiderman," the unknown woman said, turning towards me as she continued to work on opening the case.
"Good timing. Catwoman here will need your help in getting out of the country after we finish up here."
"Catwoman?!"
Black Cat exclaimed.
"No one has called me that since—"
"Oh, shut it," Catwoman said, waving her hand dismissively.
"Unless you want me to give your real name out. Which I’m sure you wouldn’t want me to do."
Black Cat’s eyes went wide with fear at that and she remained silent.
"So, who are you then?"
I asked, leaning forward to peek over the plants and see the two women.
Black Cat was a known thief in New York City and I had caught her a couple times before, but this other woman was unknown to me.
"You wouldn’t believe me if I told you," Catwoman said.
She turned her attention back to the case, her fingers moving deftly over the lock.
Black Cat, who had been about to say something, remained silent as she watched Catwoman work.
I inched myself forward, my muscles tensing as I prepared myself for when I’d have to spring out of the plants and use my web-shooters to stop them.
The case they were trying to get into was a display case for a museum and it looked like it was made of bulletproof glass.
If I could get my webbing on the glass fast enough, I might be able to stop them.
I just needed to wait until they were both at the case and then—
Catwoman’s eyes flicked up towards me for a moment before going back down to the case.
I froze, my body going rigid as my mind raced.
Had she seen me?
I held my breath, waiting to see if she would give me away.
But she said nothing and continued working on the lock.
I slowly let out a breath as I realized she hadn’t seen me after all.
But then I wondered how much she had seen of me?
Had she noticed how close I was to her?
Or had she just seen my eyes?
The moonlight streaming in from the windows behind us highlighted the display case in front of us, casting shadows on the glass and making it look like there were two display cases instead of one. The ancient Egyptian artifact inside was hard to see because of it but I could make out some details.
It looked like a small statue of one of their gods.
Probably worth a lot of money on the black market, which is why they wanted it.
Catwoman’s fingers moved quickly and efficiently over the lock before stopping at one spot where they pressed down hard on a small button hidden there.
The sound of the lock disengaging echoed through the room and I could see Black Cat stiffen as she heard it.
Catwoman pulled the door open and reached in with her hands before pulling out a small device that looked like a miniature explosive.
My spider-sense went off at that and I knew I had to act fast or else Catwoman would blow up not only the display case but possibly even the whole mansion itself.
I studied the situation carefully from my hidden position.
Catwoman’s fingers hovered over the trigger mechanism of the device and I knew that if I wasn’t careful, she could set it off by accident.
The display case was lit up by the security lights in the mansion, casting sharp shadows on the glass and making it easier for me to see both Catwoman and Black Cat.
Black Cat’s body was tense, her hands clenched into fists at her sides as she watched Catwoman work.
I could tell she was just as concerned about the explosive as I was.
I adjusted the settings on my web-shooters to precision mode and slowly began inching myself forward along the ceiling, making sure that neither woman saw me moving.
