I never thought that I would end up being friends with Tony Chen.
I mean, he is the new kid.
I and my friends knew each other since kindergarten while he just transferred to our school from another city.
Moreover, we are both boys.
I remember the first day he stepped into our class.
He was holding a folder in his hand and looking around.
He was looking for his seat which was next to mine.
I was trying to avoid eye contact with him when he caught my eye.
He gave me a small smile before sitting down.
That day during lunch time, I went with Jiang Li and Wang Xiao to the canteen.
We were eating and talking while laughing loudly.
Suddenly I heard someone calling me from behind.
"Yan Chen!"
I turned around and saw Tony calling me with a plate in his hand.
"Hey, mind if I join you?"
I looked at Jiang Li and Wang Xiao; they both seemed to be unaware of anything.
"Sure," I said with a smile, but deep down I was worried about what would happen after this.
Jiang Li always teases me about girls, but I know he doesn't suspect anything about me.
After all, we have been friends for so long, and he knows that I am not like that.
But I don't know Tony that much.
Is he also like them?
The New Student
I gestured to the empty seat next to me.
He set his lunch tray down and slid onto the bench.
His shoulder brushed against mine for a second, and I felt a jolt run through me.
I shifted slightly away from him, trying to act like it was nothing.
Jiang Li started telling us about his chemistry experiment which went wrong this morning.
The New Student
Wang Xiao interjected with some jokes, and we all laughed loudly.
I tried to keep my eyes on my food while stealing glances at Tony's profile.
When he reached across me to grab the salt shaker, his arm lingered next to mine for a second longer than necessary.
After lunch, I couldn't focus during math class.
I kept glancing at his desk two rows ahead of me.
He was taking notes with careful precision.
When he turned to grab an eraser from his backpack, our eyes met.
He held my gaze for a second before giving me a small smile.
The New Student
My heart started racing as I quickly looked down at my blank notebook, pretending to write something.
The teacher's voice faded into the background noise.
I wondered what to tell my friends when they asked me to walk home together after school.
The final bell rang, and I quickly gathered my books.
I wanted to slip out before anyone noticed me.
I glanced up to see Tony standing at my desk, his backpack slung over one shoulder.
"Hey, want to study for the math test at my place?"
He asked casually, like it was nothing.
My hands froze on my notebook.
Jiang Li and Wang Xiao were still gathering their things nearby, talking about their weekend plans.
I glanced at them, then back at Tony, who waited patiently.
The classroom emptied around us.
My throat felt dry as I tried to form words.
The New Student
"We could work on those formulas you were struggling with."
"Uh, yeah, that sounds good," I finally managed to say, my voice barely above a whisper.
Tony's eyes lit up with a warmth that made my stomach flip.
"Great, I've got some snacks at home too, so we won't starve while we tackle those equations."
We walked side by side down the corridor, my backpack clutched tightly to my chest as I kept a careful distance from him.
Other students rushed past us in both directions, their chatter and footsteps echoing off the walls.
The school's exit was just ahead of us, with students streaming out into the bright sunlight.
Tony gestured toward the left, where I could see Jiang Li and Wang Xiao waiting under the covered walkway.
"Hey, I live that way," he said, pointing in the opposite direction from where I usually walked with my friends.
"Only ten minutes from school."
I nodded, still trying to process what was happening.
My friends were already waving at me.
Tony noticed my hesitation and smoothly said, "Oh, you're walking with your friends today? I'll catch up with you later then."
I felt a pang of disappointment at the thought of saying goodbye so soon.

"No, it's okay," I said quickly.
"I'll come with you. You can help me study for that math test."
Jiang Li and Wang Xiao shrugged when they saw Tony and me walking together.
They went off to the left while we turned right onto the tree-lined street.
We walked in silence, keeping a careful distance from each other as we made our way down the street.
The sun was still shining, but dark clouds were gathering on the horizon.
A cool breeze rustled through the leaves of the trees above us, sending a few loose ones drifting to the ground.
Tony pointed out his apartment building two blocks ahead just as the first heavy drops fell.
The rain quickly intensified, pelting our uniforms and making it hard to see more than a few feet in front of us.
Without thinking, I followed Tony as he darted off the sidewalk and under the striped awning of a small café.
We pressed against the window, our shoulders touching as we caught our breath.
Water dripped from Tony's hair onto his face, making him look up at me with a grin.
"Guess we timed this one wrong."
"Yeah, but at least we found shelter," I replied, trying to ignore the warmth spreading through me from where our shoulders touched.
The New Student
Tony chuckled, wiping his face with the back of his hand.
"Maybe it's fate giving us more time to figure out those math problems," he said, his eyes meeting mine with a hint of something I couldn't quite place.
We stood there under the awning, watching the rain fall harder and harder.
The café's awning was old and leaky, so we tried to stay away from the edges.
The drops that fell through the holes made a rhythmic pattering sound on the pavement in front of us.
Inside the café, a few customers were sitting at small tables sipping drinks or eating sandwiches.
More people came running up to take shelter under the awning, pressing in around us.
Tony and I were pushed closer together by the growing crowd.
Through the window, I saw an elderly woman struggling to serve everyone on her own.
She was moving as fast as she could, but there were too many customers for her to handle by herself.
Tony's eyes met mine, and I saw something in them that made my heart beat faster.
"Let's help her out," he said quietly, his voice just loud enough for me to hear over the rain and chatter of the crowd.
The New Student
Before I could respond, he was already pushing through the crowd and inside. I followed him hesitantly, not sure if I should be doing this.
But Tony seemed confident, so I went with it.
Inside, Tony started taking drink orders while I cleared tables and washed cups.
We moved in a careful dance around each other, making sure not to touch as we worked together.
The owner watched us with a look of relief on her face.
The New Student
For almost an hour we worked together, juggling cups and saucers and dodging the steam from the espresso machine as we rushed between tables and counters.
Finally the crowd died down as the rain let up, and we were left standing by ourselves near the counter again.
The owner came over to us with two steaming cups in her weathered hands.
"You boys have been a big help," she said, smiling at us.
"Take these and sit down. On the house."
I cradled the mug between my palms, feeling the heat seep into my cold fingers.
Tony and I sat down in a corner booth, our wet shoes squeaking against the floor.
The café was empty now except for us, so every sound felt magnified.
The New Student
The clink of our cups against the saucers, the drip of water falling from our clothes onto the floor, the hum of the espresso machine as it cooled down.
Tony sat across from me, his damp hair falling over his forehead as he blew on his drink.
When he took a sip, his eyes closed in appreciation.
I stared at my own reflection in the dark liquid, aware of Tony's foot accidentally brushing against mine under the table.
