A new kid going to a new school
I stood outside the school, my hands were sweating and my heart was racing.
I was so nervous; this was my first day at a new school.
I didn't want to go in, I was scared of what the other kids would think of me.
What if I didn't make any friends?
What if the teachers were mean?
"What are you doing, Mason?"
a voice behind me asked.
I turned and saw a boy with messy brown hair and a friendly smile.
"You're Jake, right? We met yesterday in the park."
"Yes," he said.
"Why aren't you going in? Is everything okay?"
I took a deep breath and tried to calm down.
"I'm just a little nervous, that's all."
Jake nodded.
"I know how you feel. It's normal to be nervous on your first day but don't worry, I'll be with you. We'll face it together."
He smiled reassuringly and I felt a little better.
"Thanks, Jake. That means a lot to me."
"No problem, now let's go inside before we're late," he said, starting towards the school.
I followed him, trying to focus on something other than my nerves.
I looked around at the building and grounds.
The school seemed smaller than my old school in the city, which made me a little anxious.
As we approached the entrance, I started to feel a little better.
But as soon as we got to the door, I hesitated.
I didn't want to go in.
"Jake, give me a sec," I said, trying to catch my breath.
Jake nodded and went inside, leaving me alone outside.
I watched him disappear into the hallway, then took a deep breath and stepped forward.
The corridors were crowded with students rushing to their classes.
The chatter of voices filled the air as they talked about their weekends and shared stories of their summer vacations.
I walked down the corridor, trying to keep up with Jake who was ahead of me.
The students around us seemed friendly enough, some of them smiled and said hi as we passed by.
I smiled back and continued on my way.
As we turned a corner, I saw Jake waiting for me at the end of the corridor. I quickened my pace to catch up with him when suddenly someone appeared in front of me, blocking my way.
It was the principal, and he looked directly at me with a knowing smile.
