I am a 18 year old male.
I am in college.
I am 5'10.
I am pretty smart.
I am kind of a nerd.
I think I am pretty average looking.
My haircut is a low fade.
I love sneakers.
I dress in casual clothing like hoodies and sweat pants.
I don't think I am muscular or ripped like the girls like.
I am just a regular dude.
I never thought that a hot girl would like me.
I thought that hot girls would like tall, muscular, white, guys with cars.
That is what the media portrays.
That is what society says.
That is what I believe.
So when this one girl, who is a 10/10, nice, flirty, curvy Latina, showed interest in me…What was I going to do?
"Kyrie! Come here."
My brother Landon was calling me from downstairs.
Then he yelled up the stairs, "Don't wear those stupid pants and that hoodie! And those sneakers are ugly! Come down when you look presentable!"
Ugh!
Why did I have to go over there?
Can't we just talk over the phone?
Or Skype?
Or text?
Why do we have to talk in person?
And why does he keep making fun of my clothes and shoes?
The Nerd's Unexpected Love
I grabbed my phone and wallet and headed downstairs.
I was wearing my favorite hoodie and sneakers, so I wasn't changing.
I looked out my bedroom window and saw that Landon's car was in the driveway.
I walked down the hallway and down the stairs quietly, trying not to make any noise.
I could hear him rummaging through the kitchen cabinets downstairs.
I stopped at the top of the stairs and looked down into the kitchen.
He was standing with his back to me, looking through the cabinets.
He was wearing a black suit with a white shirt and a black tie.
He looked like he had just come from a funeral.
Or a wedding.
The Nerd's Unexpected Love
Or a job interview.
I didn't know why he was dressed up like that, but I knew he wasn't going to like my outfit.
I looked around for another way to get out of the house without him seeing me, but there really wasn't any other way out besides going through the front door or going out the side door through the garage. The front door would be loud because it creaked when you opened it, so I decided to go out the side door through the garage.
The garage door was quieter than the front door, but it still made some noise when you opened it, so I would have to be careful.
I started tiptoeing down the stairs, trying not to make any noise on the carpeted steps.
I got to the third step from the bottom and stepped on it, but that step creaked when you stepped on it, so I froze in place for a second before taking another step down.
That step was tricky because you couldn't tell that it creaked until you actually stepped on it.
It was like a booby trap.
Landon heard me and turned around quickly from where he was standing at the kitchen counter looking through one of the drawers in one of the cabinets.
"Kyrie! What are you doing?"
The Nerd's Unexpected Love
He yelled from where he stood in the kitchen. I froze for a second before turning around and going out the side door through the garage as fast as I could without making too much noise.
"Kyrie, wait!" Landon's voice softened, surprising me.
"I just wanted to tell you that Mom's coming home today, and she wants to see us both."
I paused, my hand on the garage door handle, and turned back to face him.
I trudged back through the kitchen to where Landon stood by the counter, my sneakers squeaking on the linoleum floor.
Landon stood with his arms crossed, looking like he was on his way to a business meeting instead of waiting for Mom to come home from the hospital.
The fluorescent lights in the kitchen highlighted the disappointment on his face.
He pulled out a chair from the kitchen table and gestured for me to sit in it.
I slumped into the chair, avoiding Landon's gaze while fidgeting with the strings of my hoodie.
The Nerd's Unexpected Love
The silence stretched between us until Landon cleared his throat and spoke.
"Look," he said softly, "I know you're not excited about dressing up, but Mom's been gone for three months."
