I bent to pick up Lily, who was crying in the living room, with snot coming out of her little nose.
I wiped her off before giving her a big hug and a kiss on the forehead.
"Hey, what’s wrong, sweetie? Why are you crying?"
She sniffed and buried her face in my shoulder.
"I want… Mommy and Daddy," she said between sobs.
I sat down on the couch with her in my lap and held her close.
"How could Daddy and Mommy be mad at you, Lily? They love you so much."
But she only cried harder.
I handed her some tissues and helped her blow her nose.
After blowing it, she said, still sniffling, "Mommy's mad at me. She didn't talk to me when she left this morning."
"Oh, is that it? Well, I think that Mommy was a little busy this morning, that’s all. She has to work very hard to provide for our family. She’s not mad at you, I’m sure."
"Are you sure?"
I nodded and smiled.
"Of course.
If I’m not mistaken, your mom will be calling soon to say goodnight to you. Will you talk to her?"
Lily thought about it and then nodded.
I smiled and hugged her tighter.
"I knew you were a smart girl.
Now let’s finish this story before your mom calls.
The Nanny's Unexpected Love
I reached for the phone and dialed Maira’s number.
Lily was still snuggled in my lap, her little fingers clutching my blouse.
When the call connected, I put it on speaker so Lily could hear the ringtone.
"Hi, Sue," Maira said, sounding a bit frazzled but still warm.
"Hi, Maira. Lily’s here with me."
I glanced down at Lily, whose big brown eyes were looking up at me.
"Hi, Mommy," she whispered, her voice trembling a little.
"Hey, sweetheart," Maira replied gently.
The Nanny's Unexpected Love
"I’m sorry I didn’t say goodbye this morning. I love you so much."
Lily’s grip on my blouse tightened.
"I love you too, Mommy."
I smiled and gave her a reassuring squeeze.
"Okay, Lily. I have to go now. But I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay, Mommy," Lily said softly.
"Goodnight, sweetie."
"Goodnight, Mommy."
I hung up the phone and looked down at Lily, who was still clutching the storybook in her small hands.
Her eyes were still red from crying, but they were looking up at me with a hint of curiosity.
"Are you mad at me?" she asked softly.
I shook my head and smoothed her hair gently.
The Nanny's Unexpected Love
"No, sweetheart. Why would you think that?"
She hesitated for a moment before answering.
"Because… I didn’t say goodbye this morning."
I smiled reassuringly and pulled her closer.
"I heard you talking to Aunt Sue last night," Lily said quietly.
I paused, unsure of what she might have overheard.
"Did I do something wrong?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
