MidReal Story

The Mysterious Princess And The Wounded General

In the autumn of the nineteenth year of the Era of Peace, golden osmanthus flowers blanketed the glazed tiles of the Zhao Ming royal palace.
Ten-year-old Princess Mingzhu ran barefoot through the corridor, silver bells jingling around her waist.
As dusk fell, the sky turned a deep red and then gradually darkened.
The princess slowed her pace and suddenly caught sight of her mother’s shadow in front of the vermilion-painted pillar.
She quickened her steps and rushed over, only to be halted by her mother’s voice: "Aning, slow down!"
The queen chuckled as she ground the last petal of white peony with her mortar and pestle.
Little Mingzhu flung herself into her mother’s fragrant embrace, the golden hair ornaments tangling with a lock of dark hair, making her gasp in pain.
"Does it hurt?" The queen asked as she stroked Mingzhu’s hair.
Just then, a commotion erupted outside, with shadows flitting past like startled night owls taking flight.
The princess’s father looked up from a pile of memorials on his desk, his brow furrowed in concern.
The queen placed her daughter by her side and continued to prepare the medication.
The Mysterious Princess And The Wounded General
I press closer to Mother as more shadows dart across the paper windows.
The night air grows thick with tension, making the medicine's bitter scent seem sharper.
Mother's hands never pause in grinding the herbs, but I notice her knuckles whitening around the pestle.
Father rises slowly from his desk, careful not to rustle the papers.
His eyes meet Mother's in silent communication.
The Mysterious Princess And The Wounded General
The guards' footsteps outside become more urgent, their armor clinking with each movement.
I want to ask again about the shadows, but Mother places a finger to her lips.
Through the window, I glimpse men in dark clothes scaling the palace walls.
I clutch Mother's sleeve tighter as she continues grinding the herbs with mechanical precision, though her knuckles whiten around the pestle.
The shadows outside grow longer, more numerous.
Through the latticed window, I spot guards rushing across the courtyard, their usual orderly formations scattered.
Father moves to the door, his hand resting on the sword at his hip.
The evening incense burns low, its sweet scent mingling with Mother's medicinal herbs in a way that makes my stomach turn.
The Mysterious Princess And The Wounded General
When a guard whispers urgently through the door crack, Mother's grinding stops mid-motion.
Father's hand trembles slightly as he pushes open the heavy wooden door, revealing the dark mouth of a secret passage behind the medicine cabinet.
I watch him slide the cabinet aside without making a sound, years of dust falling like snow.
Mother quickly gathers her medicinal pouches and pulls me toward the entrance.
The passage smells of mold and forgotten things.
Before we enter, Father checks the courtyard one last time through a crack in the window.
The Mysterious Princess And The Wounded General
His face hardens at what he sees.
He turns to us, his voice steady but urgent: "We must go now."
