I was walking back home after school, carrying my backpack and my lunch box in my hands.
The sky was dark, and it looked like it would rain soon.
Suddenly, I heard an old woman screaming for help.
I saw some kids bullying her and trying to take her bag away from her.
Without thinking twice, I rushed over and shooed them away.
They didn't seem to be from around here, so they were scared of getting in trouble with the authorities and ran away immediately.
The elderly woman looked at me with gratitude in her eyes.
"Thank you, young girl," she said.
"I'm sorry I couldn't help you sooner. Are you okay?"
"Yes, thank you. I'm fine," she replied.
She was a bit shaken but fine overall.
"Let's get you home," I said to her.
She nodded, and I helped her walk down the street slowly.
"Where do you live?" I asked her.
"It's not far from here," she said.
"Okay, which direction is it?"
She pointed toward the east, and I knew which direction she was talking about.
As we walked, she asked me about myself, what school I attended, and what my favorite subject was.
I told her everything and also asked her a few questions about herself.
I guided her down Cedar Street, matching my pace to her slow, shuffling gait.
The houses were all similar here, small and cozy with neatly manicured lawns.
At the end of the block, I could see a small house with a weathered blue facade and overgrown rosebushes in the front yard.
"That's where I live," she said, pointing to the house.
We walked up to the front door, which was painted a deep red.
The woman fumbled in her purse for the keys, her hands trembling slightly.
She finally managed to find them and inserted the ancient brass key into the lock.
With a satisfying click, the door swung open, revealing a dimly lit interior.
The air inside smelled of chamomile and old books.
Dusty crystals hung in the windows, casting rainbow patterns on the floor.
"Please come in," she said, gesturing for me to enter.
I stepped inside and looked around curiously.
The living room was small but cozy, with a plush armchair and a worn sofa facing each other across a coffee table.
There was a bookshelf against one wall filled with leather-bound volumes, and a vase of fresh flowers sat on the coffee table. "Would you like some tea?" she asked me.
"Uh, no thanks," I replied.
"I should probably get going. My aunt will be worried about me."
"Nonsense," she said firmly.
"You can't leave without having some tea first. It's the least I can do after you helped me."
I hesitated for a moment but then nodded reluctantly.
"Okay, sure. Thank you."
The woman shuffled off towards the kitchen while I took a seat on the sofa and looked around some more.
A few minutes later, she returned carrying a steaming cup of tea in her hands.
She handed it to me with a smile and sat down in the armchair opposite me.
"Here you go," she said.
"It's chamomile tea. It's good for relaxing."
I took a sip of the tea tentatively and found that it tasted like nothing I'd ever had before.
"It's delicious," I said, surprised by the warmth spreading through me.
She leaned forward, her eyes twinkling with a secret.
"There's something special about this tea," she whispered. "It's been in my family for generations, and it reveals the truth to those who drink it."
As I continued to drink the tea, I felt a tingling sensation flowing from my throat down to my fingertips.
The elderly woman watched me intently, her eyes seeming to glow in the dim light filtering through the crystals hanging in the windows.
When I finally set the delicate teacup down on the table, she reached across and grasped my hands in hers.
Her touch was surprisingly warm and strong for someone of her age.
"You have great pain in your life," she said softly, her voice filled with compassion.
"But you also have untapped potential within you."
As she spoke, I noticed that the crystals hanging in the windows began to chime softly, as if they were responding to her words.
But there was no breeze outside to cause them to move.
The room seemed to pulse with an energy I couldn't quite understand, yet somehow, I knew my life would never be the same.
I sat there, frozen in place, as her words echoed in my mind.
The crystals continued their ethereal chiming, and the shadows cast by the setting sun stretched across the worn wooden floor.
She released my hands and stood up, her movements deliberate and knowing.
Then she shuffled over to an ancient cabinet in the corner of the room, its surface adorned with intricate carvings.
I watched her open a drawer and retrieve something before she turned back to me.
The tea's warmth was still spreading through my chest, making my fingertips tingle.
She returned with a small leather-bound book in her hands.
Its edges were frayed, and golden symbols were etched into its spine.
"This belonged to another dreamer, like you," she said, placing the book in my trembling hands.
I traced the symbols with my finger, feeling an electric spark jump between the leather and my skin.
I clutch the leather book to my chest and check my phone - 6:47 PM.
My heart races as I imagine Mom's reaction.
The elderly woman walks me to her door, her knowing smile making me wonder if she understands my panic.
Outside, the street lamps flicker to life as I break into a run, my backpack thumping against my spine.
The book's golden symbols seem to pulse warmly through my jacket.
At the corner of Maple and 4th, I pause to catch my breath, my legs burning.
A car that looks like Mom's SUV turns onto our street ahead.
I freeze, squinting to see if it's really her.
The car slows down, and the window rolls down to reveal my mom's worried face.
"Where have you been?" she calls out, her voice a mix of relief and frustration.
I follow Mom inside our two-story colonial, my shoulders hunched as she berates me the whole way.
The leather book stays hidden under my jacket, its symbols still pulsing warmly against my chest.
Dad glares at me from his armchair, but he doesn't say a word.
When Mom finally runs out of steam, she points upstairs and orders me to my room for the night - no dinner.
I hurry up the creaking steps before they change their mind and decide on a worse punishment.
In my room, I slide the mysterious book under my mattress, my hands still tingling from its touch.
As I sit on my bed, the door creaks open and my little sister peeks in, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"What's that you're hiding?" she whispers, glancing at the mattress.
"It's... it's a secret," I reply, hesitating before adding, "but maybe it's the key to changing everything."
I slump against my bedroom door, tears blurring my vision as I pull out the pages of my graphic novel.
The final scene needs to be finished - where my white-haired heroine finally finds acceptance in the hidden city of Haven's Gate.
My hands shake while sketching the last panel, careful not to let teardrops smear the ink.
Each stroke feels heavier as I detail the crystalline spires and mystical barriers protecting the supernatural refugees.
The finished artwork stares back at me, a promise of escape.
I close the notebook, resolve hardening in my chest as I realize the story isn't just fiction anymore.
I drift into an exhausted sleep at my desk, the completed graphic novel still open beside me.
Through my window, a silvery mist seeps in, coalescing into the elderly woman's form.
Her wrinkles smooth away as she transforms, revealing alabaster skin and flowing silver hair.
She picks up my notebook, fingers trailing over the detailed drawings of Haven's Gate.
Magical energy pulses from her hands, making the ink glow and shift.
The enchantress touches my forehead, whispering ancient words as azure light envelops my room.
The walls begin to fade, becoming transparent as reality itself warps around us.
I stir groggily, my neck stiff from sleeping hunched over my desk.
Something feels different.
As I lift my head, a curtain of hair falls forward, and I freeze.
Instead of the usual brown locks, a cascade of white strands falls past my shoulders.
My heart races as I scramble to my feet and rush to my closet.
The door creaks as I yank it open, revealing an unfamiliar space.
All my old clothes are gone, replaced by flowing garments with crystal accents and shimmering fabric I'd only imagined while drawing Aurora's wardrobe.
My hands tremble as I reach for one of the dresses, its fabric whispering against my fingertips.
The morning light streaming through my window seems different too - more silvery than golden.
I rush to pull back the curtains and gasp at the sight before me.
Instead of the familiar suburban street with its neat houses and manicured lawns, a breathtaking landscape stretches out.
Crystal spires rise from the earth, exactly as I'd drawn them in Haven's Gate.
Magical barriers ripple like aurora borealis in the dawn sky, protecting the city within.
I turn around, heart pounding, as the enchantress steps forward with a knowing smile.
"Welcome to Haven's Gate," she says softly, her voice like a gentle breeze.
"But why me?" I ask, my voice trembling with both fear and awe.
