I was lucky enough to have found her, and I didn't even know she existed.
I was at the ice skating rink with my buddy Mason, and we were there to watch the figure skating competitions.
It was a pretty cool event, and I was enjoying myself even though I'd never been to one of these before.
As I scanned the crowd, I noticed this girl from afar, and she caught my eye.
There was something about her that fascinated me, and I couldn't tell what it was.
She was reading a book, oblivious to everyone around her, and there was something so hot about that.
I mean, who comes to an event like this and reads?
The Musician's Muse
I lean against the barrier that separates the rink from the audience, pretending to watch the skaters while I steal glances at her every few seconds.
She's completely absorbed in her book, occasionally brushing a strand of dark hair from her face and tucking it behind her ear.
Mason nudges me with his elbow, and I look over at him.
"What?"
I ask quietly.
He raises an eyebrow.
"Who are you staring at?"
I shrug.
"No one."
He looks around, trying to figure out who I'm talking about.
The Musician's Muse
"Come on," he says, "don't lie to me."
I sigh and nod toward the girl.
Mason follows my gaze and then looks back at me.
"So, who is she?"
"I don't know," I admit, "but I want to find out."
Mason grins and nudges me again.
"Well, go talk to her then."
I hesitate, unsure of what to do.
The girl looks up from her book for a moment, and our eyes meet briefly before she looks away again. I feel a jolt of electricity run through my body, and I can't help but stare at her even more intently now.
She seems completely unaware of my presence, and it's both frustrating and intriguing at the same time.
The Musician's Muse
I watch as she turns the page of her book, her brow furrowing slightly as if she's concentrating on something important.
A small smile plays on her lips as she reads, and I find myself wondering what she's reading that's making her react like this.
Suddenly, she shifts in her seat and crosses one leg over the other.
As she does, the cover of her book becomes visible, and I catch a glimpse of it before she covers it up again with her hand.
It's a book I've seen before, and it makes my heart skip a beat.
But before I can get a closer look, the intermission bell rings, and she gets up from her seat.
She tucks her book under her arm and starts walking toward the concession stand.
I watch as she weaves through the crowd, trying to decide whether to follow her.
My palms start to get sweaty at the thought of approaching her.
I'm not sure what to say or how to break the ice.
Mason shoves me forward, almost making me stumble.
"Go get a snack," he says with a knowing grin.
I trail behind her at a distance, pretending to be interested in the posters on the wall while keeping an eye on her as she waits in line at the concession stand.
I debate whether to join the line too, but I don't want to seem too obvious.
The Musician's Muse
Instead, I linger around the area, pretending to check out the snacks on display while secretly watching her. She orders something and then moves aside to wait for her order.
I take this opportunity to join the line, keeping a safe distance from her so that I don't seem like I'm following her.
As I wait in line, I keep glancing over at her, trying to get another look at the cover of her book.
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, she turns around slightly, and I catch a glimpse of it again.
This time, I get a good look at the title - "Norwegian Wood" by Haruki Murakami.
The Musician's Muse
My heart starts pounding faster as I realize that it's one of my favorite books too.
