It's 3 AM. An official phone alert wakes me up. It says "DO NOT LOOK AT THE MOON". I have hundreds of notifications. Hundreds of random numbers are sending "It's a beautiful night tonight. Look outside."
It was three in the morning when my phone buzzed and lit up my dark room.
I groggily reached for it and saw an official screen with one message: DO NOT LOOK AT THE MOON.
Before I could process what it meant, my phone started blowing up with notifications.
Almost all of them were from unknown numbers but with the same refrain: "It’s a beautiful night tonight. Look outside."
Some added, "The moon is calling you."
Others said, "Don’t miss it."
One asked, "Have you seen it lately?"
The messages kept coming until my screen couldn’t show any more notifications.
I was cautious by nature and didn’t take unknown numbers seriously.
But there had to be at least a hundred unfamiliar numbers sending the same exact messages.
It was weird and a little creepy.
Still, I couldn’t help feeling a sense of wonder and anticipation.
Was something really going on with the moon?
My friends, Ethan and Sarah, were also awake and responding to the messages in our group chat.
Sarah wrote, "I already looked. It’s full and so pretty!"
Ethan hadn’t responded yet but the buzz from his texts indicated he was awake too.
He lived across the street from me and I could see his bedroom light on.
I looked out my own bedroom window and saw what they saw.
The moon was full and hanging low in the sky.
It was twice as big as it should be and glowing with an otherworldly light.
It had an aura around it that pulsed red.
