It's 3 AM. An official phone alert wakes me up. It says "DO NOT LOOK AT THE MOON". I have hundreds of notifications. Hundreds of random numbers are sending "It's a beautiful night tonight. Look outside."
It's 3 AM.
My phone is vibrating on my nightstand.
I turn it over and look at the screen.
I have hundreds of notifications.
But it's not my social media apps alerting me.
It's my actual phone—ringing, vibrating, making as much noise as it can. I show the screen to my sleepy, half-opened eyes.
EMERGENCY ALERT: DO NOT LOOK AT THE MOON.
What the hell?
Who sends a damn alert like that?
I’m immediately awake and on high alert.
My thumbs fly over the keyboard as I type "what does the emergency alert mean?" into Google.
Before I hit enter, my phone starts ringing again.
I don’t recognize the number, but I pick it up anyway.
"Hello?"
"Look out your window."
A robotic voice answers on the other end.
"What? Why? Who is this?"
I demand.
Just as I’m about to ask again, the line goes dead.
My phone rings again.
And again.
And again.
Each time, a different number on the caller ID, but the same robotic voice on the other end telling me to "look out my window."
After a few calls, it starts saying something different.
"It’s a beautiful night tonight. Look outside."
By the fifth call, I’m shaking with rage and fear.
