It's 3 AM. An official phone alert wakes me up. It says "DO NOT LOOK AT THE MOON". I have hundreds of notifications. Hundreds of random numbers are sending "It's a beautiful night tonight. Look outside."
It's 3 AM.
My phone vibrates on my nightstand with an official alert.
I have hundreds of notifications.
I touch the screen to turn off the vibration, and my heart slams in my chest.
An official alert lit up on my screen.
It flashed over and over again: MOON ALERT. DO NOT LOOK AT THE MOON.
Hundreds of random numbers were sending me the same text: It's a beautiful night tonight. Look outside.
I lived in a small town.
Everyone knew everyone.
It made no sense for random people to be texting me in the middle of the night.
The alert said not to look at the moon, but something about that made me want to do it anyway.
Maybe it was because I was being told not to do something that made me want to do it.
I glanced out my window, half-expecting some crazy sight, but everything looked normal.
Well, as normal as it could be at 3 AM.
The houses across the street were dark, their lawns perfectly trimmed from the day before when I had also glanced out to see nothing out of the ordinary.
But the moon was twice as big as it was supposed to be, and it glowed red.
I shivered and turned away.
My phone continued to vibrate, and I wanted to ignore it, but what if something was happening and someone needed my help?
I walked over to my bed and sat, scrolling through the texts.
