My name is Josh Pinto.
I don’t know how I got here or how I got hurt.
The last thing I remember is being kidnapped, and then… nothing.
I don’t know what happened to Dink and Ruth Rose Hathaway, the two people I was with when I was split up from them.
All I know is that I was shot, left for dead, and now I’m in some hospital in the middle of nowhere.
A woman with short brown hair and brown eyes smiles at me warmly as she enters my room.
"Hello, Josh. My name is Nurse Johnson. How are you feeling today?"
"I want to go home."
"You’re not well enough yet. You’ve been in a coma for several weeks. It will be a while longer before you can leave the hospital."
"A coma? What happened? How did I get here?"
"You were found on the side of the road with a bullet wound. The sheriff brought you in."
"The sheriff? Which sheriff? What about Dink Duncan and Ruth Rose Hathaway?"
Nurse Johnson’s smile falters.
"I don’t know anything about them."
"Where is my phone? I need to call them."
"You can’t use your phone right now. You have to rest."
"Where is my phone?"
Nurse Johnson sighs and steps back, pulling her hand from the clipboard she held at her side.
I push myself up in the hospital bed, ignoring the sharp pain in my side.
The heart monitor beeps faster.
Nurse Johnson moves to stop me, but I grab her wrist.
She tenses.
I release her immediately.
I’m supposed to be a patient, not a threat.
"Please," I say, forcing my voice to stay calm.
"They’re my friends. They could be hurt too."
She hesitates for a moment, then nods.
"I’ll check with the sheriff’s office."
As she heads for the door, I notice her right hand sliding into her pocket.
She’s holding something - maybe my phone.
When she exits, I swing my legs over the edge of the bed and test my strength.
As Nurse Johnson’s footsteps fade down the hall, I slowly swing my legs over the edge of the bed.
My head spins, and I have to grip the mattress to keep from falling.
I take a few deep breaths, willing the dizziness to pass.
The pain in my side is sharp, but I can’t stay in this bed forever.
I need to find out what happened to Dink and Ruth.
My fingers brush against something under the pillow.
I pull it out - a folded piece of paper.
It’s crumpled and worn, like it’s been passed from hand to hand many times.
I unfold it slowly, trying not to make any noise.
The handwriting is messy, like it was written in a hurry.
"D&R trapped. 24 Pine St. Don’t trust staff."
My heart races as I read the words.
I recognize Ruth’s handwriting - she always crosses her t’s with a little loop at the end. I look up as I hear footsteps coming down the hall again.
Nurse Johnson is returning, her face expressionless.
I quickly stuff the note into the pocket of my hospital gown and pretend to be adjusting my pillows.
"Did you find anything?"
I ask her as she enters the room.
