I was so excited to start my first major carpentry project.
I had my new Bosch drill, a stack of lumber, and a plan to build a bookshelf.
I’d watched plenty of YouTube videos, and I was ready to go.
I’d even picked out the perfect spot in my living room for the finished project.
The only thing I hadn’t done was read the instructions that came with my drill.
But how hard could it be?
I’d used a drill before, and this one was the best of the best.
It had more power than I’d ever need, and it was cordless, so I could take it anywhere.
I grabbed a two-by-four and lined up the first two pieces of wood for the shelf frame.
Then I picked up my new drill and tried to attach them together with a screw.
The screw wouldn’t go in all the way, no matter how hard I pushed on the drill.
I tried again with another screw, but it wouldn’t go in either.
I had saved up for months to afford my new Bosch drill, and I was determined to use it for this project.
But even at its highest power setting, the drill didn’t have the power to drive a screw all the way into a piece of wood.
I tried pressing harder, but it didn’t help.
Every screw I tried to put in stopped about halfway in.
I couldn’t build a bookshelf by hand, but I was beginning to wonder if I could do it with a drill either.
What was the point of having a powerful drill if it couldn’t even drive a screw in all the way?
Maybe I should have read the instructions after all.
I set the drill aside and grabbed another screwdriver.
I’d never be able to finish this project by hand, but I didn’t have much choice at this point.
It took me nearly half an hour, but I finally managed to attach the two pieces of wood together with a series of screws.
It wasn’t pretty, but they were solid—and the screws were in all the way.
I set them aside and grabbed my drill again.
The next step was to attach the cross supports.
I lined them up with my first two pieces of wood and picked up my drill.
It took me only a second to realize the problem—I had been using the wrong type of screws.
The screws that came with my bookshelf kit had flat heads, but the ones I’d been trying to use had round heads.
Even after replacing them, my drill still wouldn’t drive the screws all the way in.
Maybe I should return it for a new one?
But no—the store was closed now, and I couldn’t afford to wait that long for a replacement.
I would just have to make do with what I had.
I tried another screwdriver, but the results were no better than before.
Then I tried attaching a new bit to my drill, hoping that would help.
I set everything aside and tried one more time to attach the cross supports by hand.
It took longer than I wanted to admit—even though the cross supports were much shorter than the longboards, they took just as long to attach by hand.
And my hands felt like they were going to fall off from all the effort!
By the time I was done attaching all four cross supports, it was nearly dark outside.
I’d expected this project to take most of the day, but not like this!
My shoulders and arms were sore from working so long without a break, and I had barely made any progress at all.
This wasn’t how it was supposed to go—I’d been so excited when I started this project earlier in the day.
Although my first few hours with the drill hadn’t gone as planned, I wasn’t ready to give up just yet.
I had dreamed about building this bookshelf for months now, and spent nearly as long saving up for everything I would need.
And even if things hadn’t started out great with my new drill, I was still determined to make my dream come true.
