Stacie's sons are Tyler and Ethan. Tyler graduated from Brown University last year. Nobody knows what he majored in in college. Tyler's birthday is October 5th. He is now a fifth-grade teacher in California. Tyler is repulsed by popcorn, even though it is one of Stacie’s favorite foods. Thus, Stacie never eats popcorn when Tyler is around. Stacie always calls her husband “Honey.” Stacie’s parents live in Florida, but when Stacie grew up, they all lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Stacie finds her mom very annoying. Her mom calls her every Sunday, but Stacie always refuses to pick up the phone until the fourth or fifth time she calls. This is because Stacie does not want to talk to her. Viv, Tyler, and Ethan typically call Stacie “Stace.”The family uses very predictable passwords for their accounts, such as Netflix1! and Hulu1!. The family is a huge fan of its chocolate-colored mini labradoodle Fezzi. Fezzi has separation anxiety and is never left home alone. Because of this, the family typically only goes to restaurants and places that allow dogs. Fezzi typically only eats food with cheese on it. While at home, Fezzi continuously barks every time he hears any noise outside. The family used to live in an apartment building called the Gotham, where they had a neighbor who would falsely file noise complaints on them. Stacie's best friend is Marina, whose husband is Mike. Mike likes skiing and has a red Ferrari. Marina and Mike have two daughters, Nina and Ava. Stacie does not orchestrate a celebration for Mother’s Day. Rather, her sons make her funny gifts, and they usually all go out to a nice dinner at a restaurant. They often go to an Italian restaurant uptown which they affectionately call “The Italian Guy.” At this restaurant, they have a friendly waiter named Julio. Stacie usually orders a parmesan-crusted sole.

My name is Stacie Melwani.
I live in a townhouse in the West Village, New York City, with my husband, Viv, and our dog, Fezzi.
I’m a stay-at-home wife which is just a nice way of saying I’m unemployed.
My boys, Tyler and Ethan, have lives of their own and are away at school during the week.
Tyler is twenty-four years old and teaches fifth grade in California.
Ethan is twenty years old and goes to Clark University in Massachusetts.
Both of my sons are really smart and cool and I’m not biased at all.
My husband, Viv, works at a private equity firm called Centerbridge in Midtown, New York City.
He is also really smart and cool but I won’t mention that I’m biased.
I don’t know what he does at work but he seems to do it well.
He gets paid a lot of money and we have a really nice life because of it.
We have a beautiful home, we take nice vacations, and we don’t worry about money much.
Viv is really thoughtful and sweet.
He frequently calls me throughout the day to check in and see how my day is going.
The Melwani Family
I hear Fezzi’s sharp bark from the kitchen where I’m testing out a new gluten-free cookie recipe.
I set the mixing bowl down on the counter and walk to the foyer where Fezzi is standing, hackles raised, staring at the front door.
I look through the glass panel to see what she’s barking at and spot a medium-sized brown package sitting on our doorstep.
Strange.
My Amazon deliveries usually come later in the day.
I look closer and see that there is no familiar shipping company logo on the label, just a handwritten address.
Fezzi continues barking as if she’s trying to tell me something.
I go into the kitchen and take a cheese treat out of the jar on the counter.
"Fezzi, come here, girl. Here’s your treat."
Fezzi looks at me but doesn’t move from her spot at the door.
The Melwani Family
She’s still barking.
I hold out her treat again.
"Fezzi, come here. It’s okay."
Fezzi doesn’t move and continues barking at the door.
This is not normal behavior for her and I’m starting to get a little spooked.
The Melwani Family
"Viv, did you order something unusual?" I call out, trying to keep my voice steady.
"No, why?" he replies, appearing in the hallway with a curious look.
"There's a package on the doorstep with no return address, and Fezzi's acting like it's a threat."
I crack open the door just enough to reach the package while keeping Fezzi back with my leg.
I slide the package inside and close the door.
The brown paper feels oddly textured, almost waxy, under my fingers.
Setting it on our marble kitchen counter, I examine the handwriting more closely.
Messy black ink, all capitals, slightly smeared.
No return address.
The package is lightweight, but when I nudge it with my finger, it makes a subtle shifting sound.
Fezzi follows me into the kitchen but keeps her distance, staying at least five feet away from the counter and growling softly.
"Fezzi, it’s okay," I try to reassure her, but she won’t come closer.
I grab scissors from the drawer and carefully begin cutting along one edge of the wrapping.
The Melwani Family
"Stacie, wait," Viv says, his voice suddenly tense.
"What is it?" I ask, pausing with the scissors halfway through the paper.
"I just remembered—Ethan called last night and mentioned something about sending us a surprise."
