Newt.
I was so used to being cold that I didn’t notice it at first.
The way the air bit at my skin like a thousand tiny teeth, the way my bones felt like ice blocks in my body, the way every breath was a fight to take because the chill in the air grabbed at my lungs and squeezed.
I was so used to it that I didn’t notice when it suddenly stopped.
I didn’t notice that I was warm, actually warm, until I looked up and saw Winston watching me with a curious look on his face.
"You feel that?"
I asked.
He nodded.
"It’s actually warm in here."
I looked around, taking in the white beds, the silver equipment, the green hospital gowns hanging on a rack in the corner.
I didn’t know where we were, but I knew it wasn’t right. Hospitals were supposed to be warm, safe.
The world outside might be hell, but in here…in here it should be okay.
"Hello?"
A voice called out from behind a white curtain hanging in the corner of the room.
"Winston? Newt? Is that you?"
Winston stepped forward, pushing aside the curtain and revealing a girl with red hair and a pale face.
She was sitting on a bed with her legs hanging off the side.

I noticed that her hands were shaking as she sat there, and I wondered if it was from the cold or something else.
Her breathing was fast, and I could see her chest rising and falling as she struggled to catch her breath.
She pulled up the sleeve of her shirt, revealing a dark vein that ran along her forearm.
It looked like a black snake slithering under her skin.
"Newt, I need to tell you something," she said, her voice cracking.
I took a step closer to her, already knowing what she was going to say.
"I got scratched," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"It happened during our last supply run. Before we got here. Before we made it to the hospital."
She paused, taking a deep breath before continuing.
"I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry. I thought it was just a scratch. But now…I don’t know. The infection is spreading faster than I thought it would. The veins are getting darker every hour."

I reached for the medical cabinet behind me, searching for anything that might help.
But before I could grab anything, Winston grabbed my wrist and stopped me.
"Wait," he said, his voice low and urgent.
"We don’t know what we’re dealing with here. We need to be careful."
I leaned against the wall, watching as Winston paced back and forth in front of the girl.
She was watching him with a mixture of fear and confusion on her face.
I could tell that she was trying to stay calm, but it was clear that she was scared.
Suddenly, there was a commotion in the hallway outside the room.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor, followed by hushed whispers and muffled voices.
The girl’s eyes widened in fear as she heard the noise.
"What’s going on?"
She asked, her voice shaking.

Winston didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked over to the door and pressed his ear against it, listening for any sign of what was happening outside.
After a moment, he turned back to us and shook his head.
"I don’t know," he said, his voice low and serious.
"But I think we should be prepared for anything."
The girl nodded, her eyes wide with fear.
I could tell that she was trying to stay strong, but it was clear that she was terrified. Suddenly, the door burst open and three figures rushed into the room.
They were all dressed in tattered clothing and looked like they had been through a lot.
One of them was holding a large bag slung over his shoulder, while another had a gun clutched tightly in his hand.
The third figure was holding a small vial filled with a dark liquid.
As they entered the room, they froze when they saw us standing there.
Their eyes widened in surprise as they took in our presence.
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then, one of them stepped forward and cleared his throat.
"Who are you?"
He asked gruffly.
Winston stepped forward to meet him, his eyes locked on the vial in the man’s hand.
"What do you want?"
He demanded.
The man looked at him for a moment before answering.
"We’re looking for someone," he said finally.
"A girl named Aris. Have you seen her?"
Winston shook his head.
"No," he said firmly.
"We haven’t seen anyone by that name."

The man nodded slowly before turning to look at the girl sitting on the bed behind us. As soon as he saw her, his eyes widened in surprise and he took a step forward towards her.
"Wait!"
Winston shouted, stepping in front of him to block his path.
The man hesitated, his eyes flicking between Winston and the girl, before he finally spoke, "Then you need to know that time is running out."
