I am a dog.
I live in a mansion with my family—my owner, Sarah; her husband, Thomas; and her sister, Emily, who comes over from college every few weeks.
My day starts at seven in the morning.
Sarah wakes me up by rubbing my belly.
I always sleep at the foot of her bed.
After rubbing my belly, she puts on my leash and we go outside to the backyard.
Sarah works from home, so I get to be with her all day.
Thomas, on the other hand, has to go to work outside of the home.
Emily only comes every few weeks, but when she does, she gives me so much attention.
After we go outside, Sarah feeds me and then sits on the plush couch on the porch while I run around and play.
I have every toy a dog could want.
After an hour outside, we go back inside the house and Sarah takes off my leash.
First thing I do is run to my water bowl to quench my thirst.
Then I go find one of my toys and chew for a bit.
After I get bored with that, I go looking for Sarah.
She’s usually in the kitchen or her home office.
If she’s in the kitchen, I sit by her feet and stare up at her, hoping she’ll give me a treat.
If I find her in the office, I jump up onto her lap and nuzzle my head into her neck.
I trot into the kitchen, my nails clicking on the polished floor.
Sarah stands at the counter, her back to me, slicing up vegetables for lunch.
I sit down at her feet and look up at her with big eyes, hoping she’ll give me a treat.
Sarah glances down at me, a smile tugging at her lips as she reaches for a small biscuit from the jar above her head.
I wag my tail in excitement.
Just as she bends over to hand it to me, the doorbell rings.
Sarah pauses mid-bend and heads for the front door.
I watch her disappear around the corner, the biscuit still tantalizingly out of reach on her hand.
I whine in disappointment.
The sound of voices from the hallway draws my attention.
I perk up my ears and listen.
It’s Sarah and Emily.
I pad softly towards the door, my tail twitching with excitement.
Emily comes into view first, her arms wrapped around a large box.
She’s talking to Sarah, who stands behind her with a bag slung over her shoulder.
Emily sets the box down on the floor and turns to Sarah, chatting animatedly with her.
The box shifts slightly, and a soft rustling noise comes from inside it.
My ears perk up even more, and I inch closer to the doorframe, trying to get a better look at what’s inside the box.
I sniff the air, trying to catch a scent of whatever is inside it, but all I can smell is cardboard and plastic wrap. Emily notices me standing there and grins at me before turning back to Sarah.
She kneels down and opens the top of the box, revealing a pile of colorful toys inside.
Emily glances up at me, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
She digs through the box, pulling out a bright red chew toy.
It’s shaped like a bone, but its surface is covered in tiny spikes.
I sniff at it eagerly, my tail wagging uncontrollably.
Emily laughs and tosses the toy across the room.
I bound after it, my paws skidding on the polished floor.
The toy bounces off the wall and lands on the floor with a soft thud.
I pounce on it, catching it between my jaws.
Emily claps her hands in delight, and Sarah chuckles from the doorway.
I turn back to see Sarah holding the biscuit, her smile warm and inviting.
I prance over to her, the red chew toy still clutched in my jaws.
She hands me the biscuit, and I take it from her fingers, my tail wagging happily.
Just as I’m about to take a bite of the biscuit, the doorbell rings again.
Emily turns towards the door, a smile on her face.
She heads for the front door, leaving Sarah and me in the hallway.
I hear voices from the front door, but they’re too muffled for me to make out what they’re saying.
The door opens wider, and a new face appears.
It’s Tom, our neighbor from next door.
He smiles at Emily as he steps inside, a box in his arms.
I watch him curiously as he sets the box down on the floor next to Emily’s bag.
Tom glances over at me, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiles.
I wag my tail at him, sniffing curiously at his shoes.
Emily gestures to the pile of toys on the floor.
"Thanks so much for bringing these over," she says to Tom.
He nods and starts unpacking the toys, setting them out on the floor beside Emily’s box.
I watch him with interest, my ears perked up as I try to figure out who this new person is. Sarah comes into the room with two cups of tea in her hands.
She hands one to Emily and offers the other to Tom.
He smiles gratefully and takes it from her before sitting down on the couch beside Emily.
I settle down beside Emily’s feet, watching Tom with curiosity as he unwraps a squeaky ball from its plastic packaging.
Tom looks over at Sarah, a hint of hesitation in his voice.
"So, did you tell Emily about the surprise yet?"
Sarah glances at Emily, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Not yet, but I think now's the perfect time."
I lay sprawled out at Emily’s feet, the squeaky ball nestled between my paws.
Tom and Sarah exchange a knowing glance, and I perk up, sensing mischief in the air.
Sarah leans over to Tom, whispering something in his ear that makes him chuckle.
Emily is engrossed in conversation with someone on her phone, oblivious to the exchange between Sarah and Tom.
Sarah takes advantage of Emily’s distraction to pick up her favorite plush toy from the pile.
She gives me a sly smirk before tiptoeing towards the hallway closet.
Tom watches her with amusement, then turns to Emily.
"Hey, Emily, you might want to pay attention," he says, nodding towards Sarah.
Emily looks up from her phone, confused. "What’s going on?"
