My name was Ayla Çiçek.
I was going to school in the third class of elementary school in a town very close to Istanbul.
One day, while I was waiting for the bus with my friends Efe Karanfil and Leyla Yılmaz at the bus stop in the morning, a strange thing happened to us.
We suddenly found ourselves on a magical road.
The road was long and winding like a snake.
There were colorful stones on it.
We looked at each other in surprise.
"How did we get here?"
I asked.
"I have no idea," said Efe.
Just then, a figure appeared from afar and approached us.
He was an old man with a green hat, white beard, and a smiling face.
"Welcome, children," he said.
"My name is Mr. Green. I'm going to take you on an interesting journey today."
We looked at each other in surprise but got into the strange car that came behind Mr. Green.
We had never seen such a car before!
It was flying above the ground without touching the road.
The car started to move, and we found ourselves in a completely different place in a short time.
"What kind of a car is this?"
I asked.
"It's an environmentally friendly car," said Mr. Green.
"It doesn't pollute nature because it runs with clean energy."
We were amazed and looked at each other.
After traveling through hills, forests, and tunnels for a while, we found ourselves by the sea.
The car stopped on a road above the shore, and we got out of the car.
Mr. Green led us down to the beach.
We walked on the sand until we reached the edge of the water.
The sand felt cool between my toes.
Mr. Green kneeled down and picked up some water in his hands.
"Look closely," he said.
We looked into the water and saw some small silvery fish darting beneath the surface.
There was no trash at all on the beach, not even a bottle cap or a piece of paper.
"How is that possible?"
I asked.
"There's no trash here," said Mr. Green.
"The local community has installed special filters in storm drains to prevent trash from reaching the sea. Also, volunteers organize weekly beach cleanups."
Just then, Efe pointed out to a group of volunteers walking along the shoreline with collection bags in their hands.
Leyla took her sketchbook out of her bag and started drawing the scene.
As we were observing the volunteers cleaning up the beach, I saw something glinting in the shallow waves.
I waded into the water and picked it up.
It was a weathered glass bottle.
I took it to Mr. Green and showed it to him.
He examined it closely and then handed it to Efe.
"Open it," he said.
Efe tried to open it, but he couldn't.
Then Mr. Green took the bottle and opened it with a twist.
Inside the bottle, there was a rolled-up parchment.
Mr. Green took out the parchment and unfolded it.
It was a map with intricate drawings of hills, forests, rivers, and seas.
There were some strange symbols on it.
We looked at each other in surprise.
"What does this map show?"
I asked.
"It's an ancient map," said Mr. Green.
"It shows the places where ancient environmental wisdom was hidden long ago."
Leyla took her notebook and pencil out of her bag and started tracing the map in her notebook.
She colored the hills green, the forests brown, the rivers blue, and the seas dark blue.
She added some colorful flowers, birds, and butterflies to make the map more interesting. "Let's look at this place," said Mr. Green, pointing at a location on the map marked with a glowing blue X.
"It looks like a coral reef."
"Yes," said Mr. Green.
"It's an underwater location."
"Does that mean we're going on an underwater adventure?"
I asked excitedly.
"Yes, indeed," Mr. Green replied with a twinkle in his eye.
"But how will we breathe underwater?" Efe asked, looking concerned.
"Don't worry," Mr. Green assured us, pulling out three small, shimmering shells from his pocket.
He gave one shell to each of us.
I held the shell necklace in my hand and watched as it pulsed softly with a gentle blue glow.
Leyla and Efe put on their necklaces too, exchanging nervous glances.
We waded into the shallow water, feeling the warm shells against our skin.
Suddenly, bubbles surrounded us, and we could breathe normally underwater.
A sleek gray dolphin emerged from the deeper waters, its clicks and whistles somehow intelligible to us now.
It circled our group playfully, then paused, looking directly at me with intelligent eyes.
The dolphin gestured with its snout toward the deeper waters where the coral reef awaited.
I nodded, and the dolphin darted forward, leading us into the crystal-clear waters.
The shell necklaces glowed brighter as we descended, casting a soft blue light around us.
Schools of fish darted past, their shimmering scales catching the light.
We swam deeper, following the dolphin through the coral formations.
Suddenly, I saw a flash of iridescent scales.
A mermaid emerged from behind a coral formation.
She had long flowing hair that rippled in the water currents and a shimmering tail that seemed to be made of mother-of-pearl.
She gestured for us to follow her to a small underwater cave.
Efe hesitated, but Leyla grabbed his hand and pulled him along.
The mermaid led us into the cave and then turned to face us.
Her voice resonated in our minds.
"Welcome, young explorers," she said.
"The coral reefs once held ancient secrets of maintaining balance in nature. Come closer and learn."
We gathered around her as she traced her fingers along markings on the cave wall.
"These symbols tell of a time when humans and sea creatures worked together to protect the oceans," the mermaid explained.
"But over the centuries, that knowledge was lost, buried beneath waves of greed and neglect."
"So, you're saying we can restore that balance?" Leyla asked, her eyes wide with hope.
