A few days before our dental appointment, my mom called the dentist office to see what they could do to help us relax during our appointment.
The receptionist told her that they had a couple of different options: 1. Laughing gas, 2. IV sedation, 3. General anesthesia, and their newest option, which is the pedisedate.
My mom asked her to explain the pedisedate, so she explained that it was like having laughing gas and playing a game at the same time.
It was a helmet with a movable arm that attached to the nose with a dental nasal hood that delivered the laughing gas, and the device could be attached to a gaming device.
There was also an attachment for an anesthesia mask if it was requested.
When my mom asked her to explain that last part, she told her it was just like having a rebreather on, but not as intense.
My mom asked her if it covered the whole face like an anesthesia mask did, and she told her no, it only covered the mouth and nose like a regular breathing mask.
She said "oh, and the kids will love this part: you blow up a balloon with your breath".
The day of our dental appointment finally came.
Lucas, Hannah, and I were very nervous about going to the dentist together.
As we entered the brightly lit dental clinic, my eyes darted to the pedisedate helmets lined up on a shelf.
A nurse approached us with a warm smile and explained each option again.
Lucas grunted and pointed at the IV sedation setup, his curiosity piqued by the unfamiliar equipment.
The nurse led him to a chair and settled him in.
With a gentle touch, she inserted the IV needle into his arm.
Hannah and I opted for the laughing gas, reaching eagerly for the colorful rebreather balloons.
"Hey, Lucas," Hannah whispered, leaning closer, "why'd you choose the IV instead of the game helmet?"
Lucas shrugged, his voice low and steady, "I wanted to see if facing my fear head-on would make it disappear."
I glanced at him, surprised by his bravery, "Do you think it'll work?"
Lucas nodded, his eyes fixed on the nurse as she prepared the IV.
I watched with a mix of admiration and apprehension, my heart pounding in my chest.
Hannah giggled beside me, her gaze still fixed on the balloons.
The nurse's voice broke through my reverie, "Okay, Tommy, which option would you like?"
I took a deep breath and pointed to the pedisedate helmet.
The nurse smiled and gently placed it over my head.
The game flickered to life before my eyes, vibrant colors dancing across the screen.
I felt a gentle squeeze on the rebreather balloon, its rhythmic expansion oddly soothing.
