Lena watched from the kitchen as her son played with his toys.
She noticed that he was playing with them, but they were also playing in front of him.
They moved at his command, as if he was doing something with them, but she didn't see him touching them at all.
She stood up from the kitchen table, where she was making lunch for everyone, and walked over to where he was sitting on the floor with all his toys spread out around him.
"Owen," she called him, and he looked up at her with his big brown eyes.
"Yes, Mom?"
He was sitting in the middle of all his toys and wasn't touching any of them.
They were just lying there, some of them moving on their own.
"Mommy wants to know what you're doing with your toys," she asked, sitting down next to him on the floor with a smile.
She didn't want him to feel like he was in trouble or anything.
He looked up at her and then down at his toys.
"I'm playing with them," he told her matter-of-factly.
"No, I mean, how are you making them move?"
She wondered if maybe he had a stick or something that he used to make them move around on the floor.
He looked up at her like she was stupid for not knowing what he meant.
"I tell them to move," he told her simply.
"Oh, so you're going to make them move then?"
The Magical Boy
Lena sat there, looking at him.
She didn't know what to say.
She had never seen anything like this before.
"Can you show Mommy how you tell them to move?"
She asked him, her curiosity getting the better of her.
He nodded and picked up a small car.
He looked at it and whispered, "Go."
The car rolled forward on the floor.
Lena watched as Owen picked up a toy airplane and told it to spin around.
It did exactly what he told it to do.
He picked up a toy robot and told it to jump up and down.
It jumped up and down on the floor in front of her.
The Magical Boy
Lena watched as Owen played with his toys, telling them what to do and them doing it.
She noticed that he was concentrating on them when he told them what to do, his brow furrowed slightly as he looked at them. She reached for her phone in her pocket, wanting to record this so she could show Matt when he got home from work, but then she stopped herself.
She didn't know if she should be recording this or not.
She didn't know if she should be documenting this or not.
"Owen, does anyone else know you can do this?" she asked, her voice a mix of awe and concern.
He shook his head, his eyes wide with innocence.
"Just you, Mommy," he replied softly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
The Magical Boy
Lena sat there with Owen for the rest of the afternoon, watching as he demonstrated his abilities.
She asked him to make a toy train go around its track, and he grinned mischievously before whispering something in the toy's ear.
The toy train chugged along its plastic rails, its wheels clicking as it moved.
She asked him to make a toy helicopter fly, and he nodded solemnly before pointing at the toy and whispering something under his breath.
The toy helicopter lifted gently into the air, hovering above them as they watched in wonder.
Each time Owen performed a trick, Lena paid close attention to every detail—the way his eyes focused intently on the object, the subtle movements of his lips as he whispered his commands.
The Magical Boy
Over the next few days, Lena kept a close eye on Owen, making sure that no one else saw him playing with his toys in such an unusual way.
She didn't want anyone to know yet.
Each evening, when Matt came home from work, she would casually mention how Owen's day had been without giving away the extraordinary details of what she had seen.
One afternoon, while Owen was napping, Lena sat in the living room thinking about what she had seen and what it meant.
She knew that she needed to find a way to help him learn how to use his abilities safely and responsibly.
She decided that the best thing she could do was to create a safe space for him to play and experiment with his magic.
She gathered some old toys and a blanket and set up a cozy corner in his room.
When Owen woke up from his nap, she led him by the hand into his room.
"This is your special place," she said, her voice steady with resolve.
