My name is Ashley and I just started working for a company as an assistant not knowing that my boss was the mafia boss.
When I first started working he didn’t tell me his last name so I didn’t put two and two together until now.
When I first started working he didn’t tell me and I was so ready to start working and prove to him that I was the best person for this job.
He told me what time I had to be there and what I had to wear, which was business attire.
The first day of work came and I was so ready to get started with my new job.
I woke up early, showered, and then put on my business attire before heading out the door.
When I got there he told me what my daily task would be and then I got started right away.
He was so nice and kind to me, which made me feel so ready to work for him.
He showed me where the kitchen was in case I needed a break and where the restrooms were as well.
After showing me all of that, I got straight to work.
I knew that he had a bad reputation with his employees, but he didn’t seem that way to me.
The Mafia Boss
I was organizing files in his office when I heard his voice through the partially open door to the conference room.
He was talking with two men in dark suits.
I couldn’t hear what they were saying, so I got up and walked over to the door to see if I could hear them any better.
I stood there for a few minutes listening to them talk about a meeting at the docks.
I had no idea what they were talking about, but it sounded important.
I stood there for a few more minutes listening to them until I heard them say something about needing to get going.
I quickly turned around and went back to my desk, not wanting to get caught eavesdropping on them.
As I sat down, I accidentally knocked over a stack of papers that were sitting on the edge of my desk.
The papers fell all over the floor, making a loud rustling sound. The voices in the conference room stopped abruptly, and I knew they had heard me.
My hands started shaking as I quickly got down on my knees and began picking up the papers.
The Mafia Boss
My heart was racing as I tried to gather all of them up before anyone came into the office.
I could hear footsteps coming from the conference room, and I knew it was Dominic coming to see what all the noise was about.
I quickly scooped up the last of the papers and sat back up in my chair just as he walked into the office.
He looked at me with an unreadable expression, and I wondered if he had seen me eavesdropping on him. "Did you hear anything?" he asked me as he walked over to his desk.
I shook my head no and pretended to be looking at something on my computer screen.
He stared at me for a few seconds before turning around and walking back out of the office.
I let out a sigh of relief as soon as he was gone.
A few minutes later, Dominic returned, closing the door behind him.
"You know, Ashley," he began, his voice low and measured, "working here means sometimes hearing things you're not supposed to."
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady. "I understand, sir. But if there's something I should know for my own safety..."
The Mafia Boss
He chuckled, a cold sound that sent shivers down my spine.
"You're a smart girl. You know how to play the game. I'll let you in on a little secret: sometimes it's better not to know too much."
I nodded, unsure of what to say.
"Thank you, sir," I replied finally, trying to keep my voice steady.
"I'll be sure to keep that in mind."
After Dominic left, I sat back in my chair and stared blankly at the wall in front of me.
I couldn't shake the feeling that he knew something was up, but I didn't know what to do about it.
I decided to just try and focus on my work for the rest of the day, hoping that everything would go back to normal soon. My shift ended at 5pm, and as I was packing up my things, I glanced through the window of Dominic's office.
He was on the phone, his voice hushed and speaking in Italian.
I didn't understand what he was saying, but it sounded serious.
The Mafia Boss
I watched him for a few minutes, wondering who he was talking to.
As I continued to watch him, Sarah walked by my desk.
She gave me a quick glance before continuing on her way to the elevator.
I wondered if she had seen me watching Dominic, and if so, if she thought it was strange.
But then again, everyone seemed to be afraid of him except for Sarah and his family.
The Mafia Boss
It wasn't until Dominic got off the phone that he finally emerged from his office and walked over to where I was sitting at my desk.
He smelled of expensive cologne as he walked up to me, making my head spin slightly. He stood there looking down at me with an unreadable expression on his face as his fingers drummed against the top of my desk.
I held my breath as I looked up at him, waiting for him to say something.
"Welcome to the family, Ashley," he said, his eyes locking onto mine with a knowing intensity.
I gripped the edge of my desk tightly as he pulled up a chair and sat down next to me, closer than any boss should.
His expensive suit brushed against my arm as he leaned in towards me, speaking in a low voice that only I could hear.
"Here, loyalty is everything. If you're loyal to me, I'll take care of you. You'll be protected, and you'll have everything you need. You'll be part of my inner circle, and you'll have all the privileges that come with it."
Each word was calculated and deliberate, like he was trying to make sure I understood exactly what he was saying.
But when he got to the part about not being able to leave, my throat tightened up.
I forced myself to keep eye contact with him, even though it felt like my heart was pounding in my chest.
He reached across the desk and adjusted my name plate slightly, his hand brushing against mine.
"You're one of us now," he said, his voice low and menacing.
I swallowed hard, trying to process what he was saying. "Does that mean I can't leave if I want to?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Dominic's eyes narrowed slightly, and he leaned back in his chair. "Let's just say, leaving isn't as simple as it sounds. But don't worry, Ashley; you'll find that being part of this family has its own rewards."
The Mafia Boss
I nodded slowly, feeling the weight of his words settle over me like a heavy fog.
I stared at my hands, which were trembling slightly in my lap.
I could feel Dominic's eyes on me, waiting for me to say something.
The office suddenly felt smaller, stuffier than it had just a few minutes ago.
"Good," he said, his voice breaking through the silence.
When I finally looked up, his dark eyes were still fixed on me, patient but expectant.
My mouth went dry as I forced the words out of my throat.
"I understand."
A small smile played on Dominic's lips as he stood up from his chair and walked over to his desk.
He slid a piece of paper across the top of my desk, and I picked it up with shaking hands.
The paper was heavy, expensive, with ornate letterhead at the top.
The Mafia Boss
I stared at the letterhead, my eyes tracing the intricate pattern of vines and flowers.
My hand hovered over the signature line, hesitant to commit to whatever it was that I was agreeing to.
Dominic held out his fountain pen, the metal cold against my fingers.
I took a deep breath and began to read through the document, scanning the pages filled with legal jargon and thinly veiled threats.
Dominic stood behind me, his presence looming over my shoulder as he pointed to each place where I needed to sign.
The Mafia Boss
The scratch of pen against paper was the only sound in the quiet office.
With every stroke of my pen, I felt the walls of my normal life crumbling around me.
I lowered the pen to the paper one last time, my hand shaking slightly as I finished signing my name.
I set the pen down and let out a shaky breath, watching as the ink dried on the final page.
The document felt heavy in my hands, like it was already weighing me down.
Dominic reached around me and gathered up the pages, the sound of them rustling together echoing through the quiet office.
He inspected each signature carefully, his fingers tracing over the curves of my name.
The Mafia Boss
I noticed a small smile playing on his lips as he looked over the last page.
When he was satisfied, he straightened up and placed a hand on my shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze.
The door clicked shut behind him, leaving me alone with the silence and the weight of my decision.
I pushed my chair back from the desk, my legs feeling unsteady beneath me.
The contract was still heavy in my mind as I gathered up my things and placed them in my bag.
I glanced around the office, noticing that the other employees were all avoiding eye contact with me.
They must have known what was happening, but they were pretending not to notice.
I caught Sarah's eye across the room, and she gave me a sympathetic look before turning back to her computer.
I straightened my blazer and smoothed out my skirt, trying to regain some sense of control over the situation.
Then, with deliberate steps, I walked over to Dominic's office and knocked on the door.
He called out for me to enter, and I opened the door and stepped inside.
"Is there something else you need, or are you just here to say goodbye?" Dominic asked, his tone almost teasing.
I hesitated for a moment, then met his gaze. "I want to know why you chose me for this."
The Mafia Boss
He leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "Because you're the only one who can handle what's coming next."
I stood there for a moment, my hands gripping the strap of my bag tightly.
The sun was setting outside the window, casting long shadows across the office.
The light caught Dominic's face just right, making his expression seem harder than before.
He rose from his chair and walked around to stand in front of me, close enough that I could smell his cologne again.
His eyes seemed to bore into mine as he reached out and adjusted the collar of my blazer.
His fingers lingered on my skin for a moment too long, sending a shiver down my spine.
"Be here early tomorrow. There's a special assignment waiting for you."
I nodded, unable to find my voice.
"Yes, sir," I managed to whisper before turning and fleeing the office.
As I reached the door, I heard him call out behind me.
The Mafia Boss
"Remember, this isn't just a job—it's a test."
I paused, my hand on the doorknob, and turned back to face him. "A test for what, exactly?"
Dominic's smile was enigmatic, his eyes unreadable. "To see if you're ready to change everything."
I gripped the door handle tightly, my palm sweaty against the cool metal.
The hallway stretched out before me, empty except for the cleaning staff starting their evening rounds.
My heels clicked against the marble floor as I walked towards the elevator, each step more confident than the last.
The weight of my bag reminded me of the contract inside, now binding me to whatever came next.
At the lobby entrance, I paused to straighten my shoulders and lift my chin.
The Mafia Boss
I stepped out into the night, ready to face whatever awaited me.
I stood at the curb, my arm raised to flag down passing taxis in the cool evening air.
Several yellow cabs zoomed by before one finally slowed.
While waiting, I pulled out my phone and texted Sarah, asking her about the first assignments for the previous assistants.
The cab pulled up, and I slid into the worn leather backseat.
I gave the driver my address and settled back to look out the window.
As we merged onto the highway, I opened my laptop and started researching Dominic's company.
I wanted to know what I was dealing with.
The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror, and I quickly closed the browser.
"You're working for Dominic now?" the driver asked, his voice tinged with curiosity.
I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. "Yeah, just started today," I replied cautiously, watching his reaction in the mirror.
The Mafia Boss
He nodded knowingly. "Be careful with that one—he's got a reputation for turning lives upside down."
I fumbled for my keys at the entrance to my apartment building, still rattled by the driver's warning.
Inside, I dropped my work bag by the entrance, kicking off my heels and letting them clatter against the wall.
The contract's weight seemed to follow me into the darkened apartment, its presence felt even as I moved towards the kitchen.
I poured a glass of wine, my hands trembling slightly and spilling a few drops on my white blouse.
Unpacking my laptop and work files, I discovered an unmarked envelope I didn't remember putting in my bag.
The Mafia Boss
I sat at the kitchen counter, turning the envelope over in my hands.
The paper was thick and expensive, similar to the contract I had signed earlier.
My fingers traced the sealed edge before carefully tearing it open.
Inside, I found a single sheet of paper with a handwritten note in elegant script:
"He's not who you think. The others didn't leave - they disappeared. Get out while you can."
The Mafia Boss
The words blurred as my wine glass tipped, spilling red across the pristine paper.
I grabbed my phone to text Sarah, but paused when I noticed three missed calls from Dominic.
I paced my living room, phone in one hand and the mysterious note in the other, dialing Sarah's number.
She answered on the third ring, her voice tight with tension.
"Ashley, what's wrong?" she asked, sensing my distress.
"I found an envelope in my bag," I explained, trying to keep my voice steady.
"It had a note saying that the others didn't leave - they disappeared."
Sarah fell silent for a moment before speaking.
"I think I know what you're talking about," she said, her voice filled with concern.
"Maria, Dominic's previous assistant, started getting those notes. She received them for a few weeks before she vanished."
My stomach dropped at her words.
"Vanished?"
The Mafia Boss
The Mafia Boss
I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper.
Sarah continued, her voice filled with urgency.
"Yes. She just stopped coming to work. Dominic was furious. But then I found out that Maria had signed a contract on her first day too. I don't know what to make of it."
The wine bottle sat forgotten on the counter as my phone buzzed with another incoming call from Dominic.
"I have to go," I said, my voice trembling.
"He's calling me again."
I ended the call with Sarah and began pacing my living room, the note still clutched in my left hand.
Dominic's fourth call flashed on my screen, and I hovered over the answer button, indecisive.
As I looked out the window, a black car caught my eye.
The Mafia Boss
It sat idling across the street, its windows tinted and reflecting the streetlights.
The wine glass sat abandoned on the counter as I took deep breaths, trying to calm myself.
The phone continued vibrating in my hand, Dominic's name flashing insistently.
I silenced the call, grabbed my coat, and slipped out the back door.
I pressed myself against the cold brick wall of the alley, my coat snagging on the rough edges as I fumbled with my phone.
The dim streetlight barely illuminated Sarah's contact information as I dialed with shaking fingers.
A car engine rumbled nearby, making me shrink further into the shadows.
While the phone rang, I clutched the crumpled warning note in my other hand, its edges damp from my sweaty palm.
Sarah finally answered, her voice tight with tension.
The Mafia Boss
Before I could speak, headlights swept across the alley entrance.
I ducked behind a dumpster, heart pounding, as the car rolled slowly past.
"Hello?" she whispered urgently.
I peeked around the corner, watching as the car continued down the street.
The alley was clear, so I crouched behind the dumpster, phone pressed to my ear.
"Sarah," I whispered back.
"I'm on my way. Meet me at the bridge."
I ended the call and tucked my phone into my coat pocket.
The note crinkled in my grip as I peeked around the corner again, searching for any sign of the black car.
When the coast seemed clear, I slipped out of the alley and hurried through the back streets, constantly glancing over my shoulder.
My heels clicked too loudly on the pavement, so I removed them and clutched them in one hand as I speed-walked barefoot.
The bridge's silhouette appeared ahead, its metal frame dark against the night sky.
The Mafia Boss
I spotted Sarah's figure leaning against the railing, her face barely visible in the dim light.
"Did you see anyone following you?" she asked, her eyes scanning the shadows behind me.
"No, but I think Dominic knows something," I replied, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and urgency.
Sarah nodded and took my arm, leading me away from the exposed entrance.
The wooden planks beneath my bare feet stung, rough and unforgiving.
I gripped the note tightly in my left hand, the crumpled paper threatening to tear as we moved deeper into shadow.
Halfway across, headlights swept the bridge's entrance behind us.
Sarah grabbed my arm again, pulling me down behind the railing.
The Mafia Boss
We crouched there, barely breathing, as footsteps echoed on the planks.
The tread was heavy, deliberate - like Dominic's walk in the office.
