I love my girlfriend to bits.
Like, suffocating-under-a-pile-of-bits.
Which is to say, I love her more than a normal person should love another person.
There’s a thin line between love and hate, they say.
In my case, there’s a thin line between love and asphyxiation.
Sarah’s too much for me to handle, and I mean that in the best possible way.
She showers me with so much affection, I’m pretty sure she’s trying to suffocate me with her never-ending love.
Not that I’m complaining or anything.
I mean, what’s not to like about having a girlfriend who makes a point to cuddle and hold me close every chance she gets?
We’re at her place right now watching some Netflix show I can’t even remember the name of because the only thing on my mind is her arms wrapped tight around me.
The Love That Suffocates
As we sink deeper into the couch, I pull her closer and feel her warmth seep into my skin.
The room is dimly lit, the only light coming from the TV that casts soft shadows around us.
Her fingers trace lazy patterns on my arm, and I can’t help but smile at how comfortable this feels.
The show drones on in the background, but I’m not really paying attention to it.
I’m too busy listening to the gentle rhythm of Sarah’s breathing and her heartbeat against my back.
I shift slightly so that we’re facing each other.
Our eyes meet in the dark, and I don’t need to see her face to know that she’s smiling.
"Hey, you know I’ve been thinking," Sarah whispers, her voice barely audible over the TV.
"What about?" I ask, intrigued by the sudden seriousness in her tone.
"I think it's time we move in together," she says softly, her eyes searching mine for a reaction.
The Love That Suffocates
I can’t help but smile.
"I'd love that."
She beams at me, her face lighting up like a Christmas tree.
"I was thinking we could start looking for a place. Maybe something close to the park so we can take long walks together."
I nod, imagining us walking hand in hand through the trees, the leaves crunching beneath our feet.
"That sounds perfect."
We sit there for a few minutes, lost in our own little world.
Sarah breaks the silence, pulling out her phone.
"Let's start looking right now," she says, her eyes shining with excitement.
I do the same, and we spend the rest of the evening browsing through apartment listings, dreaming of our future home together.
As we scroll through the listings, Sarah leans in closer to me, her shoulder brushing against mine.
Her proximity sends shivers down my spine, and I can’t help but steal glances at her profile illuminated by the phone screen.
The Love That Suffocates
Her brows furrow as she concentrates on finding the perfect apartment.
I reach out and gently smooth out her eyebrows with my thumb.
She looks up at me with a smile and takes my hand in hers, intertwining our fingers.
"You know what I want most in our new place?" she asks, her voice low and husky.
"What?"
I ask, feeling a flutter in my chest. "A big kitchen where I can cook for you every night," she replies, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"That sounds amazing," I say, feeling my cheeks flush.
Sarah chuckles softly and squeezes my hand tighter.
"I love you," she whispers against my ear, sending a rush of warmth through my body.
"I love you too," I reply, smiling up at her.
As we continue browsing through apartments online, Sarah suddenly lets out an excited squeal and points to a listing on her screen.
"Oh my god, look at this one," she says breathlessly.
I peer closer at the photo of a cozy-looking apartment with large windows overlooking the city skyline.
"It looks perfect," I say, feeling a surge of excitement build inside me.
"We should go see it in person," Sarah suggests, already typing away on her phone to schedule a viewing for tomorrow afternoon. I nod eagerly, feeling a mix of nerves and joy coursing through me as I imagine us walking hand in hand into our potential future home together.
"Let's do it," I say finally, and Sarah beams at me with a smile that lights up the whole room.
"Do you think we're rushing things?" I ask, a hint of uncertainty creeping into my voice.
Sarah pauses, her fingers hovering over her phone.
"No," she says firmly, meeting my gaze with unwavering confidence, "I think we're exactly where we need to be."
The Love That Suffocates
The next morning, I wake up to the smell of coffee brewing.
Sarah is already in the kitchen, humming softly as she makes breakfast.
I wrap my arms around her waist and pull her close, feeling the warmth of her body against mine.
"What are you making?" I ask, peering over her shoulder at the pancakes on the griddle.
"Breakfast," she replies with a smile, "and then we have that apartment viewing scheduled for this afternoon."
I nod, feeling a surge of excitement build inside me.
"Can't wait," I say, leaning in to kiss her cheek.
As we sit down to eat, Sarah pulls out her phone and starts scrolling through the apartment listing again.
"I was thinking we could put the couch in front of the big windows so we can watch the sunset together," she says, her eyes shining with excitement.
"That sounds perfect," I reply, taking a bite of my pancake. "And what about our bedroom? Do you want it to be more modern or traditional?" she asks, her brow furrowed in concentration.
I shrug, "Whatever you want."
Sarah chuckles and rolls her eyes playfully.
The Love That Suffocates
"You're not helping," she teases, poking me gently with her fork.
I laugh and poke back at her with mine.
"Maybe we should make a list of things we need to buy once we move in," I suggest, feeling a flutter in my chest at the thought of us starting a new life together.
Sarah nods enthusiastically, "Yes! And then we can start shopping for furniture."
I grin mischievously at her, "Or maybe we can just use cardboard boxes and call it 'rustic chic'?"
Sarah laughs and hits me with her fork again.
"You're ridiculous."
After finishing breakfast, Sarah leans in to kiss me softly on the lips.
"I love you," she whispers against my mouth. "I love you too," I reply, feeling a rush of emotion swell inside me.
She pulls back and smiles shyly at me.
"Let's go get our keys," she says finally, grabbing our coats from the hook by the door.
"Wait," I say, hesitating as I put on my coat.
Sarah turns to me, a question in her eyes.
"What if we find out something about each other that we can't handle?"
The Love That Suffocates
Sarah's face softens as she looks at me, her voice filled with reassurance.
"Emily," she says gently, "I don't think there's anything we can't handle as long as we're together."
With that, she takes my hand and leads me out into the crisp morning air.
As we walk down the street, Sarah's laughter echoes through the air, a melody that fills me with warmth and happiness.
Her hand grips mine tightly, and I feel a sense of anticipation build inside me.
We weave through the crowds of people rushing to work, dodging briefcases and umbrellas as we make our way to the apartment viewing.
The streets are alive with the hum of traffic and the chatter of pedestrians, but all I can hear is Sarah's laughter and the beating of my own heart. As we approach the apartment building, my nerves start to kick in.
I squeeze Sarah's hand nervously, feeling a flutter in my chest.
She squeezes back reassuringly and smiles softly at me.
"Let's go," she says, pulling me toward the entrance.
The doorman greets us with a smile as we step inside.
"Good morning, ladies," he says, his voice warm and friendly.
The Love That Suffocates
"Good morning," Sarah replies, her smile lighting up the lobby.
We take the elevator up to the 10th floor, my heart pounding in my chest with every passing second.
As we step out into the hallway, Sarah grabs my hand again and gives it another squeeze.
The agent greets us with a smile as she unlocks the door to the apartment.
"Are you ready for this?" she asks, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
I nod, trying to steady my breathing. "As ready as I'll ever be," I reply, feeling a mix of nerves and anticipation.
