I was hiking with my family in the woods behind our house.
My little sister, Lily, was walking with my mom and dad.
She was only five, so she needed to be with them at all times.
But I was nine, almost ten, so I got to walk ahead of them, as long as I stayed on the trail.
I had been walking for about fifteen minutes when I started to feel thirsty.
I had a bottle of water in my backpack, but it was a newer backpack and the zipper kept getting stuck.
After struggling with it for a few minutes, I finally got it open.
I reached in and grabbed my water.
After taking a few big gulps, I felt much better.
As I looked up from my water, I saw something shiny in between two big trees up ahead.
Being the curious boy that I was, I had to go check it out, even though it meant leaving the trail.
I ducked in between the two trees and found myself at the edge of a huge hole.
The hole was so big that it took up all of the trail behind me and more.
Looking down into the hole, I saw that it was just as deep as it was wide.
The bottom of the hole was filled with moss and wild flowers.
