I am a mermaid.
I live under the sea, of course!
I have always been fascinated by humans.
They live in a world so different from ours.
But my father, King Triton, forbade me from even speaking to humans.
Which made me want to even more.
One day I was swimming near the shipwreck that had become my second home when I saw her.
She was beautiful.
Long golden hair flowed behind her like the seaweed that waved to and fro at the mercy of the ocean currents.
She was singing and I was captivated by her voice.
It was as though she was a human version of me.
The Little Mermaid
I swam closer, the water parting gently as I approached the surface.
She was singing a song.
The notes of her voice were like a melody to my ears.
I sat on a rock near her, my golden hair shining in the sunlight.
The sun was shining brightly upon my face and I knew I had to be careful not to be seen by her.
But I wanted to see her up close.
I could not believe how much she looked like me.
She stopped singing and turned to look at me.
Our eyes met and I saw surprise written across her face.
"Hello," she said softly, her voice sounding like music to my ears.
I nodded, unable to speak without my voice.
She smiled at me, her eyes softening as she reached out a hand toward me.
The Little Mermaid
I took her hand, feeling the warmth of a world I had only dreamed of.
The Little Mermaid
As I held her hand, the world around us faded away.
The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks was all that I could hear.
Her eyes were like a mirror of my own, reflecting back at me curiosity and warmth.
She gestured for me to follow her along the shoreline.
I nodded, eager but cautious.
We walked side by side, the sand feeling strange beneath my feet.
Each step was a reminder of this new world I had entered.
She pointed to a small café nestled among the dunes.
I hesitated, unsure of what to do.
But she smiled and gestured for me to follow her inside.
I did as she asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
Inside the café, she ordered two cups of tea and we sat down at a small table.
The Little Mermaid
The aroma of the freshly brewed tea filled the air, enveloping us in a warm and comforting scent.
She poured the steaming liquid into delicate cups, her movements graceful and assured.
As I reached for my cup, our hands brushed against each other, sending a shiver down my spine.
She noticed my reaction and smiled, a knowing glint in her eyes.
I mimicked her actions, lifting the cup to my lips and taking a tentative sip.
The taste was unfamiliar, but warm and soothing.
She began to speak, her voice a gentle melody that danced in the air between us.
"Tell me," she said, "what is it like living beneath the waves?"
I paused, searching for words to describe a world she could never truly know.
