"Kion!"
Bunga shouted.
"We gotta get outta here!"
"Right behind you, buddy," I said as I raced past him.
Scar’s evil laughter echoed through the savannahs of the Pride Lands.
His spirit seemed to be everywhere, surrounding us.
We had to get away from him.
Fuli was already way ahead of us.
Ono flew overhead, keeping watch.
Beshte plodded along behind us.
He’s the one I worried about.
As a hippo, he moved slowest of all of us.
But he wouldn’t want to give up his spot in the Guard.
So I didn’t suggest he wait behind while the rest of us escaped.
"Almost there," I panted.
"We’re almost—"
A loud roar stopped me cold.
A fiery blaze erupted in front of us, blocking our path to the jungle.
It was one of Scar’s minions—playing a warped version of himself.
He let out that fake roar to scare us.
The Lion Guard
I skidded to a halt, my paws kicking up clouds of dust.
The others gathered around me.
Fuli came back to join us, her tail twitching with agitation.
Beshte finally caught up, his sides heaving with exhaustion.
The flames before us danced and crackled, sending waves of heat our way.
Sweat trickled down my face as I scanned the area.
Rocky outcrops stretched out to our left, but there was no way we could climb them fast enough.
To our right, the savannah grasses were thick and tall, but they’d be hard to push through at top speed.
"Scar’s spirit is behind us," Bunga said.
"He’ll trap us here."
The Lion Guard
"We can’t let him," I said grimly.
The flames before us were so hot I could feel them burning my whiskers.
I squinted through the heat haze at the wall of fire blocking our path.
It seemed impenetrable. Ono flew higher into the sky, his sharp eyes surveying the landscape below.
The egret banked sharply left, then right, searching for any gap in the wall of fire.
The Lion Guard
Scar’s laughter grew louder behind us—the evil spirit closing in for the kill.
"Ono, do you see anything?" I called up, desperation creeping into my voice.
"There's a narrow path through the rocks to the left!" Ono shouted back, his wings flapping furiously.
"It's risky, but it's our only chance!"
"Everyone, follow me!"
I shouted.
"We have to move fast."
I sprinted toward the narrow path through the rocks, Beshte bringing up the rear.
He was the biggest of all of us, and I worried he might get stuck in the narrow passageway.
Fuli darted past me, her long body squeezing through easily.
Bunga followed, then Ono flew overhead to watch for Scar’s spirit.
"Beshte," I called out as I slowed.
"You go next. I’ll push from behind if you get stuck."
The hippo squeezed into the narrow gap between two big rocks.
The Lion Guard
His broad shoulders almost got wedged, but Fuli and Bunga pushed from in front of him, and I shoved from behind.
Finally, he popped free.
"Whew!"
I said as he stumbled out the other side.
"That was a close one!"
The fire wall blazed before us now, its heat making my paws tingle.
Ono flew down to join us.
"Scar’s spirit is coming," he warned.
"We have to go!" I nodded, my ears perked up.
We had to keep moving—and fast—if we were going to escape Scar’s evil trap.
"Come on!"
I shouted as I raced around the edge of the fire wall, looking for any gap we could squeeze through.
There wasn’t one.
The flames were too intense—hotter than anything I’d ever felt before—and they seemed to stretch on forever.
We were going to be trapped!
Scar would finally get his revenge! But then Ono let out a squawk from above us, and Fuli darted ahead with a squeak of excitement.
I looked up at Ono in confusion as Fuli squeezed between two big rocks just ahead of us.
"Come on!"
Fuli called back over her shoulder, waving a paw at us impatiently.
"This way!"
I raced after her with Bunga right behind me and Beshte bringing up the rear again.
The hippo was breathing hard by now—I could hear him wheezing—but he refused to give up his place in the Guard.
Once we got past these rocks, we’d be back in familiar territory—the secret caves that led to Pride Rock and our home in the heart of the kingdom where our pride waited for us safely hidden away from Scar’s minions. "Come on, Beshte!" Fuli shouted back at him as she stopped in front of a small opening between two more big boulders.
"There’s just room for you!"
Beshte panted, trying to catch his breath.
The Lion Guard
"I'll make it," he said determinedly, though his eyes betrayed his exhaustion.
"We can't leave anyone behind," I insisted, glancing back at the approaching darkness.
