In the 1990s, Shanghai was like a big drum beating rapidly.
Every day, people were in a hurry, and the streets were filled with the sound of cars honking.
I was young Liu, fresh out of university, and I had come to Shanghai to make my fortune.
I had been here for a few years and had seen many things, but I still couldn't get used to the rhythm of this city.
I was working in a state-run enterprise at the time, but I didn't want to be stuck there forever.
Stock trading was all the rage, and I wanted to get in on the action.
So, I started learning from Bao.
He was a legendary figure in Shanghai's stock market.
Many people knew his name, but few had actually seen him.
Bao was like a ghost: he appeared and disappeared without warning.
Sometimes, he would send out news through other people, saying that he would meet with friends at such and such a place at such and such a time.
But when you got there, he was nowhere to be found.
I wanted to learn from him but also had no idea how to go about it.
One day, Amulin appeared in front of me.
He was also a kingpin of Qiujing Road, just like Bao.
However, he was not as mysterious as Bao.
The Legend of the Yangtze River Delta
I approached him at his usual spot in the dimly lit corner of the Shangri-La Hotel bar.
The ice cubes in his whiskey glass clinked as he studied me with narrowed eyes.
"Bao," I said.
His expression hardened, and he took a long drag from his cigarette.
The smoke curled up slowly as he exhaled, his fingers tapping on the polished wooden counter.

The bartender kept his distance, pretending to polish glasses.
"Meeting Bao comes with a price," Amulin finally spoke, his voice low and gravelly.
I slid closer, leaning in to hear him better.
"Tell me what it is," I replied, ready to pay whatever it took.
I noticed her sitting alone at the bar, elegantly dressed in a black qipao.
The dim lights of the bar danced across her face as she slowly swirled her martini glass, her gaze fixed on me with calculated interest.
The jade pendant at her neck glimmered under the soft lighting.
She leaned closer, her perfume intermingling with the faint scent of cigarette smoke in the air.
"I'm Wang Zhen," she introduced herself, her voice smooth and confident.

"Bao's business partner."
Amulin tensed beside me, his knuckles whitening around his glass.
Wang Zhen continued, "I can arrange a meeting for you. For a price."
