In the year 2080, a virus of unknown origin spread globally.
Within a month, it had killed ninety percent of the world's population.
The virus was highly contagious and deadly.
No one knew its cause or how it spread.
There were no symptoms to warn you that you were infected until it was too late.
The only clue was the smell of the infected person's body, similar to rotting fruit, but only some people could smell it.
It was said that people who could smell the sweetness in their urine had a higher chance of being immune to the virus.
This theory was based on observations and had no scientific basis.
There were only two survivors left in the entire world.
One was me, Cillum, and the other was Fumalaualpa, the oldest living being.
I am not exaggerating when I say that I am the last living person in the world.
I am not counting those who are infected and still alive but have become zombies.
They had lost their human nature and were no longer considered human beings.
Fumalaualpa was already sixty years old when the apocalypse occurred in 2080.
He was then the oldest living person in the world.
He is now eighty years old and is still very healthy.
The Last Survivors
I follow Fumalaualpa across the cracked earth, my eyes scanning the ground for any hint of green among the endless brown.
He taught me to look for signs - slight depressions where rainwater might collect, patches of darker soil that could harbor life.
We carry empty sacks and small shovels, moving slowly in the scorching heat.
Every few steps, Fumalaualpa kneels to examine the ground more closely, sometimes digging a small test hole.
I mimic his movements, learning to distinguish between ordinary weeds and the distinctive serrated leaves of the immune plant.
The Last Survivors
After hours of searching, I spot a familiar purple-tinged stem poking through a narrow crevice in the rock.
I pull it carefully, and to my surprise, the roots come out intact, a tangle of pale tendrils.
Fumalaualpa's eyes light up as he inspects our find.
He reaches into his worn backpack and pulls out a leather-bound book, its pages yellowed with age.
As he opens it, I see detailed illustrations of plants, each one accompanied by notes in a language I can't understand.
Fumalaualpa points to a drawing that looks exactly like what we've found.
The Last Survivors
The book is filled with diagrams of root structures, along with descriptions of their medicinal properties.
Fumalaualpa translates the text for me, explaining how this plant can be used to treat various ailments.
As he reads, I gently clean the dirt from the roots, marveling at how they curl in exactly the same way as the drawings in the book.
