It’s been three years since the outbreak.
I still remember that day vividly.
The day my world turned upside down.
The day I lost everything that ever mattered to me.
My whole family—my mom, my dad, and my little sister.
All of them were gone.
I was left with nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
I was a drone operator, a reconnaissance drone operator to be more specific, but now I was the operator of nothing.
I had no home, no family, nothing to live for.
I was just surviving.
That was all I was doing.
Just surviving until I could decide what to do next.
Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months.
The outbreak had spread like wildfire and before we knew it, the whole world was in chaos.
Zombies were taking over, or to be more accurate, mutated zombies were taking over.
They weren’t your typical zombies, not slow and stupid like the ones you see in movies.
No, they were fast, intelligent, and deadly.
They were almost impossible to kill unless you could get a clean shot to their head.
While I was checking the battery levels of our drone in the makeshift control room we had set up, I heard a faint static noise coming from the emergency radio we had installed.
I turned my head towards it and adjusted the frequency dial slightly, my fingers shaking a little as I did so.
At first, I thought it was just the usual white noise that we were used to hearing, but then I heard voices.
Unfamiliar voices.
I quickly turned up the volume, hoping to hear more clearly.
Emily came rushing into the room, drawn by the sound of voices coming from the radio.
She stopped in her tracks and looked at me with wide eyes.
"It’s been months since we’ve heard anything on this radio," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
I nodded and continued to adjust the frequency dial, trying to get a better signal.
The voices were still muffled, but I could make out a few words here and there.
"Survivors... safe zone... shelter..."
My heart raced as I grabbed my notebook and pen and started writing down every word that I could make out. Emily fiddled with the antenna, trying to get a better signal.
The voices grew louder and clearer, and soon we could hear everything that was being said.
"...survivors, this is an emergency broadcast. If you can hear this message, please be advised that there is a safe zone located at coordinates 43.7232° N, 79.3832° W. Please make your way there as soon as possible. There is shelter and safety waiting for you."
I wrote down the coordinates quickly, my hand shaking with excitement.
This was the first time we had heard any kind of broadcast since the outbreak.
It was like a lifeline had been thrown our way.
Suddenly, just as we were about to get more information, the transmission cut off abruptly.
We both looked at each other in confusion and disappointment.
Emily broke the silence first, her voice trembling with a mix of hope and fear.
"Do you think it's real, or just another trap?"
I hesitated, then replied, "I don't know, but it's the first lead we've had in months... we have to take the chance."
I share the radio transmission with Drake and the others during our evening meeting.
The room falls silent as I point to the coordinates on our worn map.
They lead to an industrial complex north of the city, a place we've never ventured to.
Drake is the first to speak, his voice laced with concern.
"This could be a trap. Bandits might be using this broadcast as bait."
Mason, ever the pragmatist, suggests, "We could scout it first with the drones. See if there's any activity."
Emily starts gathering repair tools and spare parts for the drones.
She knows that this expedition will take longer than usual, and we can't afford to have any malfunctions.
I load fresh batteries into our most reliable drone, the DJI Mavic, and start planning flight paths on my tablet.
Ryder asks the question that's on everyone's mind, "What if it's not real? What if it's just a trap?"
I look around at my friends, my heart heavy with the weight of our situation.
"We're running out of supplies. We can't afford to ignore this opportunity."
The meeting ends with a sense of determination and trepidation.
As everyone disperses to their tasks, I head to our makeshift weapons cache.
