It was 2001, I was in Albert Park ready to test for Minardi F1 team.
They were looking for a driver to replace Nigel Gervall, the english driver who had been in Formula 1 for 20 years.
He had driven for Lotus and Benetton before joining Minardi.
Nigel was close to retiring but he refused to completely retire from Formula 1.
He wanted one last ride with Minardi before he retired and was willing to be a reserve driver for them.
I didn't mind if I only got the chance to be the reserve driver for them, as I had always respected Nigel.
He was my childhood hero and just to be mentioned in the same sentence as him was enough for me.
I was more than happy to be a reverse driver for him, it would be an honour to be alongside him in the garage.
I was at the track ready to test when I got a call from my manager telling me the good news.
Karl Linger, the other Minardi driver, was considering retiring from Formula 1 and was going to give up his second seat with the team.
He was going to retire from racing and take up a new role with the team as an engine assistant.
My manager had been talking with the team boss and he had told him that they were more than happy to give me the second seat alongside Nigel.
