When I was nine years old, my planet was invaded.
I was in a small closet with my dog when I heard the loud crash and boom.
It sounded like thunder on a stormy night, but it wasn’t thunder, and it wasn’t coming from the sky.
It was coming from outside our house, down the street, everywhere.
I had no idea what was going on, but I knew it wasn’t good.
My heart started beating faster, and I held onto my dog tightly.
He must have sensed my fear because he nuzzled closer to me.
I wrapped my arms around him and waited, hoping that it would soon pass.
But it didn’t.
The sounds grew louder and closer, and I could hear people screaming and shouting.
I had never experienced anything like it before, and I didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly, the door to the closet was ripped open, and a blinding light shone in.
My dog whined and hid his face in my chest.
I shielded my eyes with my hand and waited for whatever was going to happen, next.
The light was so bright that even when I covered my eyes, I could still see it as if it were seeping through my eyelids.
A low hum started to build in the air, and then a voice spoke in my mind.
"Sam, run. Now."
I looked up at the ceiling as if that would give me some answers.
Who was talking to me?
The Last Princess of Nova Spire
My legs felt frozen as I crouched there, trying to figure out what was happening.
The screams outside were getting louder and closer, and my dog whimpered against my chest.
Through the crack at the bottom of the closet door, I could see shadows moving quickly across the floor.
They were too big to be people, and they didn’t look like any animal that I had ever seen.
The humming in the air grew louder, and I could feel it vibrating through my teeth.
My black veins started to tingle and glow faintly under my skin.
"Sam, RUN!"
The voice in my head yelled at me again.
My dog suddenly barked loudly and jumped out of my arms.
I didn’t think; I just reacted.
The Last Princess of Nova Spire
I burst out of the closet, tripping over toys that had been scattered across the floor.
"Sam, over here!" a familiar voice called from the hallway, and I recognized it as my older brother, Jake.
"What’s happening?" I shouted, my voice barely audible over the chaos.
"They’re here for you, Sam," he said urgently, pulling me to my feet.
Jake grabbed my arm and yanked me toward the wall.
His fingers frantically searched the smooth surface, as if looking for a hidden button.
I could hear heavy footsteps approaching, metallic and rhythmic.
My black veins pulsed brighter, and suddenly a section of the wall responded, glowing in sync with my markings.
Jake pressed his palm against it, and there was a mechanical click.
The Last Princess of Nova Spire
The wall split open with a soft hiss, revealing a dark tunnel lined with dim blue lights.
The footsteps grew louder, accompanied by harsh electronic voices.
Jake pushed me toward the passage entrance just as a shadow appeared at the end of the hallway.
