Lyra
When I stumbled upon the alien artifact, I had no idea what it was—only that it was insanely valuable.
With my delivery route for Planet Express taking me to some of the most remote corners of the galaxy, I’d learned to be observant.
Otherwise, I might not make it back to deliver my package on time.
I landed my ship on the deserted planet, grabbing my delivery and stepping out into the sunlight.
As I scanned the area, something glinted in the distance, catching my eye.
Curious, I walked toward it—and found myself staring at a small, metallic box half buried in the sand.
I reached down and tugged on it, but it didn’t budge.
It must have been there for years.
When I finally yanked it free, I gasped.
A symbol was etched into the top of the box—and it was unlike anything I’d ever seen.
"Score," I said aloud.
I tucked the box under my arm and headed back to my ship.
Once inside, I stowed my delivery in the cargo bay and placed the box in a locker at the back of the ship.
I didn’t plan on telling anyone about it.
Not yet.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
I settled into the pilot’s seat, plotting my course back to Planet Express headquarters.
As I worked, I heard footsteps echoing from behind me.
I looked up to see Kiran emerging from the shadows of the cargo hold.
His dark eyes were fixed on the locker where I’d hidden the box, and my heart skipped a beat.
He must have seen me.
I hadn’t realized he was even awake, let alone watching me.
"Kiran," I said, trying to sound casual.
"What are you doing up here?"
He didn’t answer right away.
Instead, he continued to stare at the locker, his gaze intense.

Finally, he turned to me and crossed his arms over his chest.
"I saw you find something interesting," he said in his deep, rumbling voice.
"Care to tell me what it is?"
My heart raced as I tried to think of a response.
I couldn’t let him know that I had found something valuable.
Not yet, at least.
"It’s just some salvage," I lied.
"Nothing important."
Kiran raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced by my story. "Salvage?" he repeated.
"From where?"
I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant.
"Just some old junk I found lying around."
Kiran took a step closer to me, filling the small cockpit with his presence.
He was so tall and broad-shouldered that it was hard not to feel intimidated by him, even though I knew that he would never hurt me.
"Lyra," he said softly, his voice low and husky.
"I saw you hide something in that locker. And I think I know what it is."
My heart skipped a beat as I realized that he must have seen the symbol etched into the box too.
But how did he know what it meant?
"What do you think it is?" I asked cautiously, trying not to give away too much information. Kiran smiled slightly, his eyes glinting with amusement.
"I think it’s from Aethereia," he said quietly.
"My home planet."
My eyes widened in surprise as I stared at him in shock. "You’re from Aethereia?" I asked incredulously.
"But how? That planet was destroyed centuries ago!"
Kiran nodded solemnly, his expression serious.
"Yes," he said softly.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
"I am one of the last survivors of Aethereia."
I felt like someone had punched me in the gut as I realized what this meant.
The artifact was even more valuable than I had imagined!
I gripped the artifact tighter as Kiran took another step closer.
His eyes were fixed on the box, and I could see the longing in his gaze.
But something didn’t feel right about this.
If he was really a prince from Aethereia, why had he been hiding in my cargo hold?
Why hadn’t he told me who he was before now?
And how did he know what the artifact meant?
I took a step back, keeping the locker between us.
"This isn’t yours," I said firmly.
"You have no right to it."
Kiran’s eyes widened in surprise, and he looked at me with confusion.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
"But Lyra, I explained—"
I cut him off before he could continue.
"I don’t care what you say," I snapped.
"This artifact is mine now. And if you want to stay on my ship, you’ll leave it alone."
Kiran looked taken aback by my words, but he quickly regained his composure. "Lyra," he said softly, his voice filled with regret.
"I’m sorry if I scared you. But please, you have to listen to me. The artifact is important to my people. We need it to restore our planet."
I shook my head, refusing to believe him.
"I don’t know what kind of game you’re playing, Kiran," I said coldly.
"But I’m not buying it."
Kiran sighed deeply, his shoulders sagging in defeat.
"Fine," he said quietly.
"If that’s how you feel, then I guess there’s nothing more for me to say."
I watched as Kiran turned and walked back into the cargo hold, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside of me.
Part of me wanted to believe him, but another part of me couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about this whole situation.
And until I could figure out what was going on, I wasn’t going to let my guard down around him again. As soon as Kiran was out of sight, I quickly activated the cargo bay’s emergency protocols and sealed the doors behind him.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
The red warning lights flashed on and off as the bay doors began to open slowly, giving Kiran a clear choice: leave or get sucked into space.
"Get off my ship," I growled under my breath as I watched the doors open wider and wider until they were fully extended.
Kiran hesitated for a moment, then stepped into the void, leaving only silence behind.
I stare at the closed cargo bay doors, my hands still shaking on the control panel.
The artifact feels heavy in my jacket pocket, and I can’t shake the feeling of guilt that’s settled in my stomach.
Through the external cameras, I see Kiran’s form drifting away from the ship, his magnetic boots keeping him tethered to the hull.
His spacesuit’s oxygen gauge blinks a warning on my display - fifteen minutes left.
"Damn it," I curse under my breath.
I activate the ship’s external comm system, hoping he’ll hear me.
"Get back inside," I say, my voice cracking.
"Please."
There’s no response from Kiran, but I know he can hear me.
I take a deep breath and reopen the cargo bay doors.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
The airlock cycles, and then Kiran steps inside, pulling himself along the handrails until he reaches the door to the cargo bay.
He removes his helmet and looks up at me through the window.
I sit across from Kiran at the small metal table in the ship’s cramped mess hall.
The artifact lies between us, its intricate carvings glinting in the dim light.
Kiran’s eyes are fixed on it, and I can’t help but study his face for any sign of deception.
The silence stretches out between us, thick and heavy.
I break it first.
"You need to prove to me that I can trust you," I say, my voice firm.
Kiran looks up at me, his dark eyes searching mine.
"How do you want me to do that?" he asks quietly.
I hesitate for a moment before answering.
"I don’t know," I admit.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
"But you need to convince me that you’re not just some con artist trying to get your hands on this artifact."
Kiran nods thoughtfully, then reaches into his suit and pulls out a small crystal pendant on a leather cord.
He holds it out to me, and I take it cautiously, feeling its weight in my palm. "This is the royal seal of Aethereia," he explains softly.
"It’s been passed down through generations of my family. It’s all I have left of my home."
I turn the pendant over in my hand, studying it carefully.
It looks old and genuine, but I’m still not convinced.
"How do I know this isn’t just some fake relic you found lying around?" I ask skeptically.
Kiran sighs deeply, then presses his thumb against the crystal pendant.
Instantly, it begins to glow with a soft blue light, illuminating the dark room around us.
I gasp in surprise as a holographic image flickers to life above the pendant - a map of the galaxy with several star systems highlighted in red.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
"This is where Aethereia was located," Kiran explains quietly, pointing to one of the highlighted systems.
"And this is where we are now."
I stare at the holographic map in awe, realizing that this is no ordinary pendant.
"Keep it," Kiran says softly, his voice filled with emotion.
I lean forward to examine the pendant more closely, my fingers hovering over its crystalline surface.
As I reach to take it from Kiran’s outstretched hand, the artifact suddenly pulses with an intense blue light that matches the glow of the pendant.
The metal box vibrates against the table, and I can see the symbols etched into its surface begin to illuminate one by one.
Kiran freezes mid-motion, his eyes wide with shock.
I grab hold of the artifact to steady it, but it feels warm beneath my fingers.
The symbols continue shifting and rearranging themselves into new patterns, and I realize that they’re some sort of code.
But before I can decipher their meaning, a sudden jolt of electricity shoots through me, causing me to jerk backward in surprise.
The artifact drops from my grasp and clatters loudly against the floor.
Kiran lunges forward to grab it, but as soon as he touches it, his body goes rigid and his eyes roll back in his head. "Kiran!" I shout in panic, reaching out to grab his wrist.
But as soon as I make contact with him, I feel the electricity coursing through my own body.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
It’s like we’re connected somehow - and I don’t know how to break free.
I try pulling away from Kiran, but my hand feels stuck to the artifact’s surface.
The symbols continue flashing faster and faster until they become a blur of light and color.
I feel myself being drawn into their rhythm, losing all sense of time and space.
Suddenly, everything goes black.
The Last Princess of Aethereia
When I come to, I’m lying on the floor next to Kiran, my head throbbing with pain.
The artifact is still clutched in his hand, but its glow has faded back down to a soft blue pulse.
