The artificial time lamp on my bedside table lit up.
It was 6:00 AM on the ship's time schedule.
I reached over and turned it off.
The ship's computer, Eve, sang in a sweet voice, "Good morning, Jack. The current ship's time is 06:00 AM. The temperature outside the cabin is 22 degrees Celsius. Your schedule for today is empty."
I sat up and looked around my small living room.
The walls were covered in old pictures and posters.
I got out of bed and went to the corner of the room where my clothes were kept.
I picked out a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt and put them on.
I then walked over to the small kitchen area and started to make myself some coffee.
As I waited for the coffee to brew, I thought about today being my first day as a security officer on this ship.
I had been assigned this job two days ago, but I was given a day off to get myself ready.
I thought about how I would be able to help Mia now that I had a job that would give me access to more areas of the ship.
Ever since she had lost her memories, Mia had been acting strange.
She kept talking about going back to Centaurus and how she wanted to get off this ship as soon as possible.
I didn't know what had happened to her, but I knew that something was wrong.
Mia never talked about leaving the ship or going back to Earth.
The Last Hope
I finished my coffee and walked over to the elevator.
I pressed the button for Level 2, where Mia's luxury apartment was located.
The elevator doors opened, and I stepped inside.
As the doors closed, I thought about how different this part of the ship was from where I lived.
The corridors were clean and well-lit, and the walls were covered in expensive artwork.
It was a stark contrast to the dingy corridor that led to my small cabin on Level 5.
The elevator stopped on Level 2, and I stepped out into the corridor.
I walked down the hallway until I came to Mia's door.
I hesitated for a moment before pressing the buzzer.
After a few seconds, Mia's voice came through the intercom.
The Last Hope
"Who is it?"
"It's me, Jack," I replied.
There was a pause, and then Mia said, "Come in."
The door slid open, and I walked inside.
Mia's apartment was large and luxurious, with expensive furniture and artwork covering the walls.
But something was off.
There were papers all over the floor, covered in strange drawings and symbols that I didn't recognize. Mia was standing in front of her dining table, staring intently at some star charts that were spread out before her.
She was still wearing her nightgown, and her hair was disheveled.
She looked up as I approached her, and for a moment, she seemed confused.
Then she quickly gathered up the papers on the table and shoved them into a drawer.
"Jack," she said, her voice shaking slightly.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to see if you were okay," I replied, looking around at the cluttered room.
"You seem a little...off."
Mia laughed nervously and ran a hand through her hair.
"I'm fine," she said.
"I just...I didn't sleep very well last night."
She walked over to the kitchen area and started to make some tea.
"Do you want some?" she asked me. "No thanks," I replied, glancing at my watch.
"I have to get going soon. I start my new job today."
Mia nodded distractedly as she poured herself a cup of tea.
"That's right," she said.
"Congratulations again."
She took a sip of her tea and then set it down on the counter.
"Jack," she said, turning to face me.
"There's something I need to tell you."
"What is it?"
"What is it, Mia?" I asked, noticing the tremor in her voice.
She hesitated, glancing at the drawer where she'd hidden the papers.
"I think I remember something about Centaurus... and it's not what we thought."
The Last Hope
I sat down across from her at the table, watching as her hands trembled slightly as she sorted through the papers.
The morning light from the artificial windows cast long shadows across her face, accentuating the dark circles under her eyes.
She pulled out a crumpled star chart and smoothed it out on the table, pointing to a series of coordinates she'd marked in red ink.
"These are the coordinates for Centaurus," she explained, her voice barely above a whisper.
"But there's something else here... something I can't quite remember."
Her fingers traced patterns between the stars, as if trying to decipher a hidden code.
"I think there was a secret mission... one that wasn't part of our original plan."
I leaned forward, intrigued by her words.
"What kind of mission?"
She hesitated, glancing around the room nervously.
The Last Hope
"I'm not sure... but I think it has something to do with this."
She pulled out a small piece of paper with some cryptic symbols on it.
"This was in my pocket when I woke up this morning. I don't know where it came from or what it means." I reached out to take the paper from her, but she quickly pulled it away, knocking over her cup of tea in the process.
The liquid spilled onto the papers on the table, soaking them and causing the ink to run.
Mia gasped and quickly grabbed a towel to clean up the mess.
The Last Hope
But as she did, I noticed something strange.
"Mia, these symbols... they're not just random," I said, pointing to the paper.
Her eyes widened as she looked at me.
"You recognize them?" she asked, her voice a mix of hope and fear.
I helped her gather up the papers that had fallen to the floor, trying to salvage what was left of the ink.
The overhead lights flickered, and then the emergency lights kicked in, casting a dim red glow over the room.
"What's going on?"
Mia asked, clutching the papers to her chest.
"I don't know," I replied, glancing at the ceiling.
"Maybe it's just a power outage."
The overhead speakers crackled with static, and then Captain Andrew's voice came through, his tone calm but urgent.
"We have experienced a Level 2 power failure in Sectors 7 through 12. Please remain calm and stay in your designated areas until further notice."
I checked my security comm-pad, which was clipped to my belt.
The screen lit up with an alert: "Report for duty immediately."
The Last Hope
I sighed and looked at Mia.
"I have to go," I said, standing up.
"But I'll be back as soon as I can. Try not to worry."
She nodded, still clutching the papers to her chest.
But as I turned to leave, she grabbed my arm.
Her fingers dug into my sleeve, and I could see the fear in her eyes.
"Please don't go," she said, her voice shaking.
"There's something else... something I need to show you."
I gently pulled away from her grip and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"I promise I'll be back soon," I said.
"Just stay here and try to stay safe." She nodded again, but I could see the uncertainty in her eyes.
As I turned and headed for the door, she called out to me once more.
"Jack!"
I stopped and looked back at her.
Her eyes were wide with fear, and she held up the paper with the symbols on it.
The Last Hope
"You have to see this," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"These symbols," she said, her voice trembling, "they match the ones on the ship's restricted files."
I froze, my mind racing.
"Mia, how do you know that?"
Standing in the red emergency lighting, I hesitated before taking the paper from Mia's trembling hands.
The symbols blurred before my eyes as I moved closer, my fingers brushing against her cold skin.
Her breath caught as our hands touched.
The paper felt worn, its edges soft from being repeatedly folded and unfolded.
My security comm-pad continued buzzing with urgent alerts, but I remained frozen, studying how the emergency lights cast shadows across her face.
The Last Hope
She didn't pull away when I leaned in slightly, her eyes fixed on mine.
The moment stretched until another power surge made the lights flicker violently, breaking our connection.
I hurried through the dimly lit corridors, my boots echoing against the metal floors as the red emergency lights pulsed overhead.
The paper in my pocket felt heavy with significance.
Crew members rushed past me in the opposite direction, their faces tense in the crimson glow.
At a junction, I paused to check my comm-pad's map, plotting the quickest route to the control room.
A group of engineers blocked my path, arguing about the power failure.
I squeezed past them, ducking under exposed ceiling panels where repair crews worked.
The control room's reinforced door came into view, guarded by two officers I recognized from my security training.
"Jack, you need to see this," one of the officers said, stepping aside to let me through.
I entered the room, and Captain Andrew turned to face me, his expression grave.
"Those symbols Mia showed you—they match the ones we've found in the encrypted files from the mission logs."
I stood in the control room as the backup generator's deep rumble vibrated through the metal floor.
Captain Andrew paused mid-sentence when the main lights flickered back on.
The emergency red faded away, revealing worried faces around me.
Engineers at their stations verified system stability while checking diagnostics.
I pulled out Mia's paper, comparing the symbols to the classified files on the main screen.
They matched perfectly - not just similar, but identical down to the smallest detail.
The head engineer announced all systems were back online, but Captain Andrew's stern look told me this conversation about the symbols wasn't over.
"Jack, these symbols are part of an ancient code we've been trying to decipher since the mission began," Captain Andrew said, his voice low.
I glanced at the screen, then back at him. "Why wasn't I informed about this sooner?"
Captain Andrew sighed, rubbing his temples. "Because we didn't think anyone outside the command team had access to them until now."
The Last Hope
I watch Mia approach through the control room's glass doors, her presence drawing immediate attention from the command staff.
Captain Andrew tenses, his hand moving toward his comm device.
The symbols on the main screen cast a blue glow across her face as she walks directly to me, ignoring protocol and security clearance.
Her fingers brush against my hand, sending a chill through my arm.
"I knew you would find this connection," she whispers, her breath warm against my ear.
The Last Hope
Before I can respond, she pulls a small data chip from her sleeve and places it into my palm, closing my fingers around it.
"Be careful," she says, her voice barely audible over the hum of the computers.
Captain Andrew steps forward, his expression hard.
"What did you just give him?" he demands, but Mia doesn't acknowledge him.
Instead, she keeps her gaze locked on me.
The control room falls silent except for the steady hum of computers and the soft chatter of security officers moving to block the exits.
My fingers tighten around the chip in my palm.
Security officers move to block the exits, their eyes fixed on me.
Mia places herself between me and Captain Andrew, maintaining eye contact with me as if daring him to make a move.
Captain Andrew steps closer, his hand reaching for my closed fist.
I quickly slip the chip into my boot, hoping it's not visible from where I stand.
The Last Hope
Mia smiles slightly, as if she expected this exact move. "Another power fluctuation detected," announces the head engineer, his voice cutting through the tension.
The lights flicker again, and in that brief moment of darkness, Mia vanishes.
I grip the railing of the metal stairwell, my boots clanging against each step as I descend through the emergency exit.
The data chip in my boot digs into my ankle with every impact.
Red warning lights pulse through the narrow space, casting strange shadows on the walls.
Behind me, I hear Captain Andrew shouting orders and the heavy footsteps of security officers starting their pursuit.
Two levels down, I pause at a landing to catch my breath, pressing my back against the cold wall.
The Last Hope
The alarm continues its piercing wail.
Through a small window, I spot Mia crossing the adjacent corridor, beckoning urgently.
I crouch behind a maintenance panel, watching her gesture frantically from the far end of the corridor.
The dim light makes it difficult to discern her features, but her movements are unmistakable.
I edge closer, keeping low to avoid the security cameras.
My boots scrape against the metal floor.
The data chip feels heavy in my boot.
From the stairwell, I hear distant footsteps echoing off the walls.
Mia reaches for something on the wall, and a hidden panel slides open, revealing a keypad.
She types in a code, and a section of the corridor wall slides open, revealing the entrance to a service tunnel.
I hear Captain Andrew's voice getting closer, barking orders into his comm device.
My muscles tense as I prepare to sprint the final distance to Mia.
The Last Hope
"Mia, what is this place?" I ask, breathless as I reach her side.
"It's our only way out," she replies, urgency lacing her voice.
"And that chip—it's the key to everything," she adds, her eyes locked onto mine with a fierce intensity.
I hesitate at the entrance of the service tunnel, watching her silhouette against the dim emergency lights.
The metal walls feel cold against my palm as I steady myself.
Behind us, Captain Andrew's voice echoes through the corridor, ordering a sector-wide lockdown.
Mia's hand finds mine in the darkness, pulling me gently into the narrow passage.
The data chip shifts uncomfortably in my boot as we move deeper into the tunnel.
The Last Hope
Maintenance pipes line the walls, hissing with steam.
When we reach a junction, Mia stops suddenly.
She turns to face me, her eyes reflecting the red warning lights.
I freeze at the unexpected voice, pulling Mia behind me protectively.
Through the dim red emergency lighting, I make out a figure in maintenance coveralls.
It's Paul, the underground doctor.
He gestures toward a narrow maintenance shaft, his voice hushed and urgent.
"This is our only way. It leads to my clinic," he explains.
The Last Hope
Mia squeezes my hand, silently urging me to trust him.
The data chip feels heavy in my boot as the security officers' footsteps echo through the main tunnel.
With no time to debate, I help Mia climb into the shaft first, then follow Paul's lead into the cramped space.
I crawl on my belly, the metal walls pressing against my shoulders.
Paul leads the way, his movements practiced in the narrow passage.
We finally reach a hidden panel that slides open, revealing a dimly lit room.
The air is stale, filled with the scent of medical supplies.
Paul helps us down from the shaft, and we find ourselves in a small storage room adjacent to his clinic.
We catch our breath among shelves stacked with medical supplies and equipment.
Suddenly, the captain's voice blares through the ship's speakers, ordering everyone to gather in the commercial plaza.
Paul checks his security feed on a small screen.
The plaza is already filling with people, their faces anxious and confused.
I move to a small window overlooking the plaza.
The Last Hope
Security officers direct people toward the center of the room.
Mia grabs my arm, her voice urgent as she whispers, "We have to be there. We can't draw attention."
I watch as Paul's nurse, Sarah, pulls medical uniforms from a storage cabinet.
She hands me a white coat that smells of antiseptic and helps Mia into scrubs and a surgical mask.
Sarah explains that the service corridor behind the clinic leads directly to the medical station in the commercial plaza.
While changing, I carefully transfer the data chip from my boot to the inner pocket of the white coat.
The fabric scratches against my skin as Sarah demonstrates how real medical staff walk and carry themselves.
The Last Hope
Through the small window, I see more security officers flooding into the plaza.
Paul glances at the screen, then turns to us with a grave expression.
"They're looking for someone specific," he says quietly, his eyes lingering on the data chip in my pocket.
Mia's eyes widen as she whispers, "You mean they know about the chip?"
While adjusting my medical disguise, a flicker of light catches my eye.
From the coat pocket where I stashed the data chip, a small holographic projection emerges—a detailed, translucent cat that moves with lifelike precision.
It sits on the examination table, tail swishing, and lets out a loud meow that makes Paul drop his scanner.
Mia freezes mid-stride, her eyes wide with recognition.
The cat turns its head toward her, revealing a collar with symbols that match those from her papers.
I reach for the projection, but my hand passes through it as if it's made of air.
The cat meows again, louder this time.
Sarah checks the corridor, concerned that someone might have heard.
Paul steps closer, his voice low and urgent.
"That projection is a beacon. It's broadcasting our location."
The Last Hope
Mia's face pales as she whispers, "We need to shut it off before they trace it here."
I huddle with Mia and Paul behind medical supply crates.
Captain Andrew's voice echoes through the clinic's speakers, his words muffled by the walls.
The holographic cat continues projecting from my pocket, its light reflecting off metal shelves.
Paul frantically searches through drawers for something to contain the signal.
He explains that the ship's sensors can detect unauthorized holograms, especially those not linked to a personal comms device.
The Last Hope
Through the window, I watch security officers methodically searching each section of the medical bay.
They're getting closer.
Mia grabs my hand and points to an air vent above us.
I crouch lower, sweat trickling down my neck.
The heavy boots of the security officers approach, and I hear the jangle of equipment.
Paul finally finds a small device that might block the signal, but he needs a few more minutes to activate it.
Sarah stands by the door, pretending to organize supplies while keeping an eye on the officers.
The holographic cat continues to flicker in my pocket, its light seeping through the fabric.
Through the gaps between the crates, I see the first officer enter the room.
He's armed, his weapon raised as he scans the area.
More officers follow, moving in a pattern to cover every inch of the room.
Mia's hand finds mine again in the darkness.
We press ourselves against the cold metal wall as the officers' shadows stretch across the floor, creeping closer to our hiding spot.
The Last Hope
I huddle with Mia behind the crates, watching Paul connect wires to a small display screen he pulled from his medical kit.
The holographic cat flickers and vanishes as he attaches the data chip to the screen.
The device crackles with static before a clear image appears.
It's a recorded message from Captain Andrew himself, his face stern and serious in the dim space between supply shelves.
Security officers' footsteps echo outside our hiding spot.
The Last Hope
Mia and I lean closer to hear Andrew's words, spoken in a whisper.
"Operation Centaurus has been compromised. The mission details are on this data chip. You must destroy it if captured."
Paul's fingers tremble as he reaches for the chip, ready to erase everything.
I press against Mia behind the crates, our hands locked together.
Paul's screen flickers with static, but the message continues to play.
Security officers' footsteps grow louder outside the door.
Sarah pretends to drop supplies, buying us a few seconds.
I feel Mia's rapid pulse through our joined hands, matching my own racing heartbeat.
The Last Hope
The chip grows warm in the reader as more of Andrew's message plays.
Through gaps between crates, I see an officer's shadow pause at the doorway.
I lean forward with Mia to watch the screen as Andrew's message continues playing through bursts of static.
The image shifts, showing a younger man standing next to Andrew in what appears to be the ship's control room.
Mia's hand tightens painfully around mine as she stares at the man's face.
Her breathing becomes shallow and quick.
The security officers' footsteps pause right outside our hiding spot.
Mia whispers a single word: "Marcus."
Her free hand reaches toward the screen, trembling as she traces the outline of the man's face.
I've never seen her look so shaken, even during her memory loss episodes.
"Mia, who is he?" I ask, my voice barely audible over the static.
"He's my brother," she replies, her eyes never leaving the screen.
The Last Hope
"But Mia, you told me your brother died years ago," Paul interjects, his fingers hesitating over the chip.
