Evelyn
The sun was setting over the horizon, painting the sky with its hues of orange and red, giving the world a picturesque view.
But the beauty of the scene was short-lived as the earth shook and the sound of rocks and trees fell in the distance filled the air.
A loud rumble followed and the sound of rushing water could be heard.
A dam or a levy must have broken and the floodwaters were coming our way.
"Everyone, move now!" I yelled as I quickly scanned our surroundings.
We were in a valley with mountains on both sides.
The only way to go was forward, but how could we make it time?
"Follow me!"
I yelled as I took off running.
The others were right behind me.
I could hear their heavy breathing, but I didn't dare look back.
I had to find a way to safety.
The sound of the rushing water was getting closer and closer.
I spotted a tree up ahead, its branches hanging down into the water.
It gave me an idea.
"Take hold of the tree branches," I yelled as I ran towards it.
"We have to get out of the water!"
The others quickly followed my instructions.
Once we were all holding onto the branches, the water rushed around us, waist-deep and powerful.
I pulled myself along the branches, fighting against the current that threatened to tear us away.
The water was still rising and it was now chest-deep.
I looked through the spray of water and spotted a rocky outcropping about thirty feet away.
It jutted from the valley wall and if we could make it, we might be able to escape.
Marcus was behind me, helping Sarah maintain her grip on the slippery bark.
Drake was right behind him, his face set in a grimace as he clung to a branch that creaked ominously under his weight.
The flood surged stronger, threatening to tear us from the tree.
We would have to time this perfectly - wait for a momentary lull in the current, then swim hard for those rocks.
The water continued to rise, now reaching our necks.
I wrapped my legs tighter around the branch, feeling the rough bark dig into my skin.
Sarah whimpered between coughs as waves splashed over her face.
Drake's branch groaned louder and I wondered if it would hold.
Through the roaring waters, I heard Marcus shout something about timing and waiting for his signal.
A massive surge lifted us higher and then dropped us down.
Drake's branch cracked, splintering in a shower of wood shards.
Without hesitation, I released my grip on the branch and grabbed Drake's collar before he was swept away.
"Marcus, now!" I shouted, my voice barely carrying over the roar of the water.
"Go, go, go!" Marcus bellowed back, his voice commanding and urgent.
Drake gasped, "I can't swim!" as he clung to me desperately.
