It is a cold and snowy day.
I am not willing to go out, but I must go.
I have been staying in this cave for two weeks.
Although it is warm, I must leave.
The cave is not big enough for me to take a few turns, and it is not good for my body.
In addition, there is no food near the cave.
If I do not go out, I will starve to death.
My body is already thinner.
My once shiny fur has become dull.
I am not willing to be so dirty.
I want to be clean and beautiful like before.
I want everyone to look up to me like before.
As I step out of the cave, the icy wind bites into my thinning fur.
The snow is deep, and my broken antler feels heavier with each step.
I am not as strong as before, but I must keep moving forward.
Gaven, the young elk who has been by my side since I was injured, trots along beside me.
His eyes are alert, scanning for any signs of danger.
We make our way along a narrow path between towering pines, the snow crunching under our hooves.
The wind picks up, and I stumble slightly, but Gaven is there to steady me.
We come to a small clearing, and I see tracks in the snow.
My heart quickens as I realize they are the tracks of other elks.
Could it be that my family is nearby?
I take a deep breath, determined to find them.
The elk tracks lead deeper into the forest, winding between snow-laden pines.
I limp forward, my hooves sinking into the fresh powder with each step.
Gaven walks ahead, clearing a path through the deeper drifts.
My throat feels raw from the cold, but I raise my head and let out a long, resonant call - the same one I used when my children were young.
The sound echoes through the trees.
I pause to listen, my ears straining against the whistle of wind.
Gaven stops too, his head turning as he scans the white landscape.
"Do you think they'll answer, Eldrin?" Gaven asks, his voice tinged with hope.
"I don't know, but we have to try," I reply, my heart heavy with uncertainty.
"What if they're gone?" he whispers, fear creeping into his eyes.
